Goodwill Industries of Central Iowa MISSION STATEMENT The mission of Goodwill Industries of Central Iowa is to empower individuals and families with barriers to independence through training, education and employment. VISION Bringing out the best in people. VALUES Partnership Respect Advocacy Innovation Stewardship Ethics We value collaborating with others, as we realize we can t meet our mission on our own. We treat all people with dignity and respect and listen to all people. We promote the rights of clients and staff as we strive to meet our mission. We embrace continuous improvement, bold creativity and change, and strive to continually learn. We honor our heritage by being socially, financially, and environmentally responsible. We strive to meet the highest ethical standards, which includes integrity, accountability, and transparency.
PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Goodwill Industries of Central Iowa experienced another record breaking year during More people were served and more individuals were placed into jobs within our communities. Numbers for 2011 include 1,943 people who received services from Goodwill Industries of Central Iowa and 220 individuals who were placed into jobs. We lived our mission of empowering individuals and families with barriers to independence through training, education and employment. Goodwill continues to be good for our environment. We had record breaking sales at our 17 stores and our online shopping site at Shopgoodwill.com. Nearly 22 million pounds of materials including clothing, shoes, books, cardboard, plastics and house wares were sold in our stores or as salvage. And, through an agreement with Dell Computers, our e-waste program kept close to 800,000 pounds of electronics out of the landfill. Goodwill continues to be good for the economy. Goodwill Industries of Central Iowa employs 270 individuals. In regard to the clients we serve, they assist local companies with contract services such as assembling and packaging materials, and mailings. Through Goodwill Solutions, Inc. clients perform janitorial services at the Federal Building, the U.S. Courthouse, and the switchboard operations at the V.A. Hospital. If a client obtains a full time position, it is estimated that money spent within a community rolls over (is re-spent) approximately 2.5 times. The potential economic impact in our communities with 220 placements is $9,918,480! Goodwill is good for the communities in which we provide services. Our stores provide high quality items at low prices. By partnering with organizations such Iowa Workforce Development and Des Moines Area Community College, we become a valued resource to those in their job search. Our Day Services Program supports individuals with chronic mental illness by providing them with daily living skills training. Our success comes through the efforts of many including our dedicated staff, volunteers and Board of Directors. It comes through partnerships such as the one with Younkers which generates 229,300 pounds of clothing donations which are then sold in our stores. And it comes through the support of the citizens from the many communities which Goodwill of Central Iowa serves. Goodwill strives to bring out the best in people, to make a positive difference in the lives of the people we serve, and to have a positive impact in our community. We are grateful to all who support our work. Sincerely, Marlyn McKeen President

OVERVIEW OF SERVICES Day Services: The Day Services program provide services for persons with persistent mental illness. Their goals include the development of independent functioning in self-care, physical and emotional growth, socialization, education and prevocational skills. Program activities enhance the self-esteem and dignity of each client. Outcome measurements indicate clients are satisfied with this program. They show that they have improved their socialization skills and increased their independence. Employment Services: The Supported Employment Program at Goodwill Industries helps individuals with disabilities or other barriers to employment find competitive jobs within our community. Employment Specialists, employed by Goodwill, consult with employers in the community to match clients to positions appropriate for them. Once a client is placed into an employment opportunity, Goodwill s Job Coaches provide assistance and support through follow-up training. Work Development Program: The Work Development Program at Goodwill provides work experience to persons with disabilities or other barriers to employment in order to help them achieve their maximum vocational potential. These programs are designed to improve work habits and attitudes while teaching skills such as interviewing and completing an employment application. They gain knowledge of employee readiness skills for future employment and increase their independence.
Supporting our Veterans: Goodwill supports local veterans by providing training and placement services to homeless veterans within central Iowa. In addition to these services, Goodwill assists veterans in obtaining emergency shelter, transportation, clothing, housing, and substance abuse counseling and treatment. Our goal is to help provide stability and a way for veterans to obtain meaningful employment and achieve greater independence. Projects with Industry (PWI): PWI matches the determination and dedication of young adults (ages 16-24) with disabilities to the needs of local employers. PWI takes a dual-customer approach: We serve the clients but we also serve businesses and their unique needs for talent and dedication. Representatives from many sectors financial services, retail, food service, building and grounds maintenance, warehouse, hospitality and information technology benefit from this program. PWI Skills Training Programs: Goodwill Industries of Central Iowa provides skills training programs to help individuals overcome employment obstacles and become more independent. These programs are designed to be applicable to individuals in a wide variety of settings, especially in situations where limitations based on disabilities or other barriers to employment exist. In addition to the specific skills taught, the programs help individuals develop positive attitudes and personal characteristics to help them become more successful, contributing members of society. Training areas include: janitorial, cash register, retail, food, money handling and building financial stability.
Case Management: Targeted Case Management (TCM) is an individually focused process through which clients are assisted in building a foundation for personal growth. Through identifying, securing, and sustaining resources, clients are able to live in a productive and interdependent way within the community. Goodwill Industries Case Management Department partners with Golden Circle Behavioral Health. Industrial Services: Industrial Services provides a cost-effective method for area manufacturers and businesses to assure quality work is completed on time. More and more businesses in our community are discovering the quality of work that can be done by Goodwill s Industrial Services Department. Goodwill capabilities include: labeling, packaging, inspecting, weight counting, assembling, sorting, and shrink wrapping. Shopgoodwill.com: Shopgoodwill.com is an online auction website that allows people to bid on Goodwill items, and purchase them through the Internet. With Shopgoodwill.com, individuals can shop from home and find good deals with the ease and click of a mouse. Similar to other online auction sites, Shopgoodwill.com allows the shopper to view items and place a bid. With many new items listed each day, shoppers are guaranteed a variety of merchandise to choose from. Volunteer Services: Goodwill Industries Volunteer Services (GIVS) is a volunteer organization of men and women who support the training efforts and mission of Goodwill Industries. GIVS members contribute their time by providing monthly social activities, such as: Thanksgiving and holiday dinners, Halloween costume parties, bowling and movie get-a-ways, picnics, dances, and much more! Goodwill also utilizes volunteers at our retail store locations and at our headquarters.
Donations When individuals donate to Goodwill, they know their tax-deductible contribution supports training and employment programs for individuals with barriers to employment.
