2 1. What is Puffer? The Puffer is a technology invented by Suterra that consists of a reliable, electronically controlled, mechanical device (cabinet), and an aerosol pheromone formulation (canister). The cabinet is used to dispense the pheromone in the canister, which provides mating disruption for the targeted pest. Puffer Characteristics Active Emission. Due to the electronically controlled mechanical device component of the cabinet, the pheromone is only released when the device is activated. This allows for complete control of the emission rate and timing. Timing. Emission frequency can be programmed every minutes or every 3 minutes. This allows you to tailor the release rate to the characteristics of the pest. Independent from climatic factors. The emission is not affected by extreme temperatures or other weather conditions, such as strong winds. LCD DISPLAY POWER SLIDE SWITCH TEST PUFF BUTTON SET BUTTONS ACTUATOR HAMMER CAN DOOR ORIFICE One application per season. Low risk of product degradation. The product is protected from the environment inside the aerosol canister. Big savings in labor costs. Because the product is applied once per season and at very low rates (cabinets/acre) there will be lower labor costs compared to handapplied dispensers. Delay Start. Get an early start to Puffer deployment this season. With the new delay start feature, you can begin hanging Puffers in the field up to 99 days prior to anticipated biofix.
3 2. How does the Puffer work? The Puffer works by delivering precise amounts of pheromone into the field creating a large area of influence. In return, this lowers the male pest s ability to find and mate with a female, and as a result lowers offspring and pest populations. Area of Influence of a single Puffer versus a cluster of hand applied dispensers (with equal release) P D Puffer Cluster of dispensers % of Trap Suppression No Trap Catches Many Trap Catches 5m (164ft) Source: Casado, Cave & Welter, UC Berkeley. 5m (164ft)
4 3. Puffer distribution, application and labor savings. The Puffer is typically applied in a grid pattern according to the size of the field. Read and follow label instructions to determine the right amount of Puffer cabinets per acre. Apple orchard in Washington with Puffer cabinets in a grid pattern: 2-25 ft (6-76m) Factors to consider before applying Puffer cabinets in the field include: Wind direction. Topography. Crops. Neighboring orchards. Pest pressure. Consult your Suterra representative or distributor for more information on placement. Labor Savings. Product Quantity Setup time Hand applied dispensers 4/acre 26 min/acre $4.78 Puffers 2/acre 2 min/acre $.35 Average Cost of Deployment/Acre Please note: numbers based on 1 worker paid $11/hr working for 8 hours. Puffer installation based on use of quad (fuel cost included).
5 4. Proven efficacy. The efficacy of the Puffer technology has been demonstrated against different pests including codling moth, oriental fruit moth and navel orangeworm.
