1. Introduction (1 EC) Course content 1.1 Inholland Participating in the orientation programme of Inholland before starting your exchange is compulsory for all new exchange students, as you will receive important information, needed throughout your stay at Inholland. Of course it is also an opportunity to meet all the other exchange students and student mentors, and to get to know the university and the city. 1.1 Introduction OZW/ ACTA On the first day of the exchange you will get an explanation of this program book and your schedule. You will also be oriented with the clinical building. 1.1 Introduction Blackboard Blackboard (BB) is a website used by the education. The Faculty can post information and announcements for the students on this website. On BB you can find a lot of information useful for your education. You will find BB at: You will receive an individual user name and password. 1.2 Introduction clinic You will get an introduction of the clinic. By the introduction you will get to know Axium. This is a computer program which is used in the clinic for all Dental and Hygiene Treatment. In Axium you will find the dental history of the patients who are assigned to you. You will have your own Axium card which you need to use the program. This card is also used to receive instruments from the sterilization department. The hygiene of your working environment is essential for yourself and for your patient to prevent and to eliminate cross infections. Both you and the patient are regularly exposed to various infectious agents, therefore dental hygienists must have a good knowledge about infection control procedures, universal precautions, and cubicle disinfection. During a clinical training you will be taught how to maintain the unit and how to apply the hygiene protocol at the education. You will be expected to maintain clean personal hygiene. You will get as well information about the protocol of patient treatment which is used at the Faculty of Dental Hygiene Inholland. After receiving the theoretical information you will practice with the protocol by working out a case. For any dental treatment, a thorough Medical History is essential. Getting acquainted with the patient means also knowing the Medical History of the patient. At the beginning of the appointment you need to ask the Medical History questions to decide if treatment is appropriate and safe. In this lecture the role of the Medical History will be explained. You will get some cases to practice with the Medical History. There will be a lecture together with the Dutch 2 nd Dental Hygiene students. This lecture is about Halitosis (a bad breath). Halitosis is a social problem, as well for the patient as
the dental practitioner, which is difficult to discuss. Within this lecture there will be an explanation how to recognize and treat halitosis. 1.3 Presentation In the beginning of your exchange you will give a presentation to the second year students of dental hygiene. By giving the presentation you will meet your fellow students for these 3 months. The Dutch dental hygiene students can get an impression of your country and education by this presentation. The presentation will take a maximum of 15 minutes. If you are with more than one student from the same education, you can do the presentation together. The presentation is about your country and education where your study takes place. Your presentation should be in English and include: - images; - reason why you decided to take part of the Erasmus exchange; - information about the country and education; - the structure of the Dental model in your country and the roles of the team members; - information about the oral health in your country; - differences between your country and Holland (general and educational); - short description of courses which are offered by your education; - information about yourself; - interaction with the Dutch dental hygiene students. 1.1: Instruction 1.2: Instruction lecture/ Practical 1.3: Presentation for the Dutch dental hygiene students Level of course Bachelor year Assessment methods 1.1: - 1.2: Assignment + Practical Record Book. This assignment contributes to your Reflection Journal. 1.3: - 1.1, 1.2, 1.3: Annemieke.paap@inholland.nl (1 st page) (1 st page) 2. Dental Hygiene (5 EC) Course content 2.1 Instrumentation techniques An important part of an exchange is to get to know the different ways of treating patients. Removing calculus is a part of the tasks of a Dental Hygienist. There are several ways of using the probe and prophylaxis instruments, each with a different instrumentation technique. Each Faculty and country has its own instrumentation technique.
The Faculty of Dental Hygiene Inholland teaches their students instrumentation techniques according to the Dutch book: Avoort van de G., Endstra L., Zwet van der M. Professionele Gebitsreiniging, Bohn Stafleu van Loghum, tweede geheel herziene editie Before you will start treating patients, you will have a lecture. In this lecture you will get to know the instrumentation technique which is taught at the Faculty of Dental Hygiene Inholland. You will have a practical training as well in which you will get familiar with the instrumentation technique of the education. At the clinic you have the opportunity to work with the sonde, scaler, Gracey-curette and ultrasonic. You will work with American Eagle and Hu Friedy. During the training you practice on a phantom head in which you get acquainted with the instruments and the technique. The third practical is together with the Dutch students. During this practical tips and tricks are given for sub gingival prophylaxis. Special sub gingival instruments are demonstrated. After the demonstration you get the opportunity to practice yourself with the instruments. 2.2 Anesthetics In the Netherlands dental hygienists are allowed to give local anesthesia to a patient. Cleaning deep pockets in combination with local anesthesia has several advantages. Namely: - The treatment is more comfortable for the patient - It is more rewarding to treat a relaxed patient - Less bleeding during the treatment - The course anesthetics consists of 3 parts. 1. Theoretical exam: The preparation for this test is done by self-study. The book which will be used is Introduction to Dental Local Anesthesia Hans Evers and Glenn Haegerstam. 2. Preclinical anesthesia: During the preclinical practical you will get familiar with a syringe and how an injection is done. 3. Practical anesthesia: This is a practical training in which you will practice the infiltration anesthesia and the mandibular block on your fellow student. If you have completed the course anesthesia at your own Faculty then you will only take part of the practical anesthesia. 2.3 Patient treatment The challenge of an Erasmus exchange is that you will get to know a different way of patient treatment. That s why this is a very meaningful part during the exchange program. There are many things which differ from each country or even each Faculty. Think about the administration which is done in a computer program, writing letters to a dentist, communication between Dental Hygienist and the patient (verbal and nonverbal) and of course the hygiene protocol. By observing you can learn a lot. Every person performs a treatment in a different way, which let you learn new perspectives. There are numerous of differences which you can observe during patient treatment. That s why the Faculty asks you to treat patients but also to observe the Dutch students and teachers and get to know different approaches. - Treating your fellow student
The patient treatment is an important part during the exchange program. The patient treatment will ultimately be your profession. The patient treatment gives you skills in becoming a professional dental hygienist. As the education has a different way of patient treatment it is good to practice first with your fellow student before starting patient treatment. - Patient treatment After completing treating each other, you will start patient treatment. The patients will be treated under supervision of the teacher. The teacher guides the student during the patient treatment. You will treat patients during the morning or afternoon, the other part of the day you will assist your fellow student with patient treatment. This means that you will be the whole day present during patient treatment. The student will receive a Practical Record Book (PRB) which is being used during this course. In the PRB the student gets feedback from the teacher about the performed treatment. During the course you will work following a protocol, just like the other students. This protocol is a guidance for the conduct of a well-run treatment. 2.4 Ergonomics A right working posture is very important for a dental hygienist. As a dental hygienist the chance to get physical problems are enormous. During the activity Treating Each Other you will look at your ergonomics. Bring your own camera to the 3 practical s treating each other. The teacher who supervises you will make some pictures of your ergonomics. Observe your picture and write about your own ergonomics. Actually you give yourself feedback on your own working posture. 2.1: Practical 2.2: Practical 2.3: Practical 2.4: Self-study (tutorial) Level of course Bachelor year 2 3 Assessment methods 2.1: Practical Record Book 2.2: Exam + Practical Record Book 2.3: Exam: Assessment with the coach/ Practical Record Book 2.4: Assignment. 7 3. Coaching + Internship (3 EC) Course content 3.1 Coaching Coaching and self reflection is an important part in the education of dental hygiene. During your exchange period at the education of dental hygiene you will be linked to a coach. Your coach will guide you with your study during the exchange, encouraging you to contribute to self reflection and self learning. In the exchange program you will also follow lessons of your coach (summative feedback). In the lessons you will learn about your competencies and aims, your progress and achievements, and be encouraged to direct your attention to areas that may be lacking. You will learn how to use the self reflection to get the most out of the exchange. 3.2 Internship In the Netherlands the dental hygienist is able to work in different kind of fieldworks. You can work in a general practice, a hospital, a orthodontic practice, commercial company and more. You can also start your own practice. During your stay in Amsterdam you will go to some different kind of practices outside the Faculty. 3.1: lecture 3.2: practical/ observation Level of course Bachelor year 1 2 Assessment methods 3.1: Exam: Write a reflection journal in which you describe your learning experiences from the 3 months Erasmus exchange. Your report consists from 2 parts: 1. Assignments 2. Reflection on the international exchange (minimum 1,5 A4) 3.2: Assignment. This assignment contributes to your Reflection Journal. 3.1, 3.2: Annemieke.paap@inholland.nl 4. Intercultural communication Course content 4.1 Table clinic During the International Week you are asked to prepare a presentation in the form of a table clinic. A table clinic is a relatively informal presentation that is held in a professional manner through the use of a special table that is set up with illustrative and eye catching material. You will be presenting to students and teachers, some of which will be from Universities from other countries. Each Dutch SLB group is divided into 2 subgroups (maximum 8-9 students). You will be part of one subgroup. Each group receives a designated culture and topic that is related to Dental Hygiene and Oral Care. The presentation duration is 7 minutes and will be in English. After the 7 minutes presentation there are 3 minutes to answer questions from the listeners. You will present the table clinic, together with the group, 2 times. 4 students present the table clinic the 1 st time and the other students answer the questions from the listeners.
The 2 nd presentation, the students who have not presented yet will do this now. The 2 nd presentation will be an assessment. The presentation can be given in different ways, the table clinic is represented in an attractive manner through the use of a decorative table. This can be in the form of traditional clothing, drinks, food and music etc. 4.2 International Week Every year the faculty of dental hygiene Inholland organizes the International Week. During this week there are several lectures and workshops given by lecturers from foreign countries. You will also present the table clinic (activity 4.1). During this week you will be present every day. The content of the International Week will follow later on. 4.1: assignment: presentation 4.2: lecture Level of course Bachelor year 2 Assessment methods 4.1: Assignment.
