INFORMATION ON AFTERCARE OF DENTAL IMPLANTS.132.indd :0
WHAT DOES AFTERCARE CONSIST OF? Straumann implants are a modern option for tooth replacement when you are missing one or more teeth. You have chosen this well-known and highquality method for your treatment. Careful care of your implant after treatment is important for success following the surgical procedure. In this information leafl et, we would like to provide you with information on p What you should know immediately after the surgical procedure p When you should contact your doctor p How you should take care of your new teeth The dentist and patient both contribute to the longterm success of a dental implant solution..132.indd :0
POSTOPERATIVE SIDE EFFECTS Complications are rare after placement of a dental implant the treatment is usually a routine procedure. The stitches are usually removed about seven to ten days after the implant placement. Straumann solutions have been thoroughly researched and scientifi cally tested, however, there may be possible side effects. It is very important to know if you feel any symptoms or side effects to contact your dentist immediately..132.indd :0
IMMEDIATE MEASURES ICE FOR SWELLING Cool the treatment area externally using ice as soon as possible after the operation to help prevent pain and swelling. MEDICATIONS FOR PAIN If the dentist treating you has prescribed medicine, start taking it as directed right away. BE CAREFUL WITH ORAL RINSES In the fi rst few hours after the operation you should not rinse your mouth as it may cause you to bleed. However, you may drink shortly after the procedure! TEMPORARY RESTORATION While the implant is healing in your mouth, the implant may have a healing cap or a temporary tooth replacement. A healing cap is placed on the implant to allow for your mouth to heal before the next step in your treatment. Avoid chewing anything hard on the side where the implant was placed. This will help the implant heal safely to prepare for the next step in your treatment..132.indd :0
WHEN THE DENTIST IS NEEDED! CALL YOUR DENTIST QUICKLY IF ANY OF THE FOLLOWING OCCUR p Throbbing pain on the day of the operation p Numb feeling at the implant placement 12 hours after the operation p Pain or swelling at implant placement several days after the operation p Further bleeding p Loose temporary tooth p If you have symptoms or questions not mentioned in this leafl et.132.indd :0
DO S AND DON TS HELPFUL POST-OPERATIVE TIPS You should talk to your dentist about specifi c helpful tips for your situation. p Sitting is better than lying down. Keep your head up during the day and also at night. Do not lie on the side where the implant was placed. p Do not drive in the fi rst few hours after the operation. Your ability to drive might be impaired by the anesthetic or medications. Ask your dentist. p Do not use a toothbrush in the implanted area of the mouth until the stitches are removed. Your dentist will recommend using an oral rinse several times a day instead of brushing your teeth. p Do not eat until the anesthetic has worn off. p Alcohol, nicotine, coffee and black tea should be avoided in the fi rst few days after the procedure. Do not smoke. p Sport and physical exertion should be avoided in the fi rst few days after the procedure..132.indd :0
YOUR IMPLANT NEEDS CARE If you love your teeth, look after them. Dental implants can last a long time only with careful oral care. Just like with your natural teeth, dental tartar can build and cause problems for your implant. Use a soft toothbrush (change regularly) or an electric toothbrush for cleaning your teeth. In addition, you should also use any aids recommended by your dentists such as interdental brushes for cleaning the space between the teeth. Teeth are brushed on the inside, outside, and on top where you chew. Regular check-ups and preventive visits to the dentist are necessary. An individual oral care plan will be described to you by your dentist. You should ask about cleaning techniques so that you will become familiar with what the dentist wants you to do to care for your teeth. Careful care and checkups (twice a year) will help your dental implant to remain fi rmly in place for years..132.indd :0
