1 STUDY GUIDE Primary School Teacher Training Below you will find an overview of the Primary School Foreign Language Teacher Training Studies programme. The modules will commence at the beginning of February. It is only possible to participate in a 15 credits (ECTS) programme. There is an opportunity to borrow the required books in the CHE library. 2 COURSE 1: Foreign Language acquisition - lectures Weight of the 1.0 ECTS Theoretical and practical lectures regarding current research on FLA in primary education. Relevant individual preparation and contribution to the lectures and practical sessions form the basis of evaluation. The candidate shows understanding of the basic principles underlying foreign language acquisition, and can apply them in his/her own teaching Brief description of the contents of the above mentioned module The covers theory and practice regarding current research on Foreign Language Acquisition in primary education, and practical application of research findings in the foreign language classroom. 3 COURSE 2: (Early) English in the Classroom context - lectures Weight of the 0.5 ECTS Practical lectures regarding FLA methodology in primary education. Relevant individual preparation and contribution to the lectures and practical sessions form the basis of evaluation. The candidate shows adequate knowledge of FLA methodology, and can apply these principles to his/her own teaching. The covers practical examples on how to teach English as a Foreign Language in primary education. During practical sessions students are expected to show knowledge and application of FLA methodology by teaching fellow students. Feedback based during these practical sessions is noted and evaluation takes place on the basis of student performance in class. 4 COURSE 3: English Language and Pronunciation - lectures & practical sessions Weight of the 1.0 ECTS (Practical) lectures regarding English language and Pronunciation. Relevant individual preparation and contribution to the lectures and practical sessions form the basis of evaluation. Candidates gain insight in their strengths and weaknesses regarding their own English language skills. Based on the feedback provided students work on developing their English proficiency. The commences by testing students' English writing, speaking, and grammar proficiency. Based on the feedback provided, students work on developing their English proficiency using the Study materials required for this. Upon completion of this students may be entered for the Anglia AcCEPT Proficiency external examination. 5 COURSE 4: Intercultural Communication - lectures Weight of the 0.5 ECTS Lectures regarding Intercultural communication in which current theory is illustrated through practical examples. Guest lectures, S.M. van der Ree Relevant individual preparation and contribution to the lectures and practical sessions form the basis of evaluation. Candidates gain insight into the realm of Intercultural Communication and are confronted with cases such as may arise in communication with individuals from other cultures so as to lean to anticipate behaviour that is uncommon in students' home culture. / S.M. van der Ree This comprises a number of lectures and practical sessions in which candidates gain insight into the realm of Intercultural Communication and are confronted with cases such as may arise in communication with individuals from other cultures so as to lean to anticipate behaviour that is uncommon in students' home culture. 6 COURSE 5: (theoretical) Research on Foreign Language Acquisition in the classroom Weight of the 7.5 ECTS Individual sessions with students are planned to set up a research question and concomitant subsections. Following this the lecturer will provide students feedback on their half-finished papers at regular intervals. Final papers are evaluated in terms of content and language use. Content is to be at a scientific level, showing an understanding of current literature regarding the chosen topic. Language use should be at publication level in a non-scientific, professional publication in a relevant field Candidates gain insight into what scientific research regarding (foreign) language acquisition entails, and show an understanding and application of scientific publications in their own argumentation. Various publications and handouts are provided during the individual sessions, specifically tailored to meet students' needs.
7 COURSE 6: Dutch culture & field trips Weight of the 2.0 ECTS Outings to various sites of cultural interest, organised by the institute. D. Hulstein Students are not tested as such, as this module is designed to provide students with an insight into Dutch culture.. Candidates gain insight into Dutch culture and geography. D. 8 COURSE 7: Student guidance Weight of the 2.0 ECTS International students are teamed up with Dutch students to gain familiarity with the institute, Ede and its surroundings. International students will also visit primary schools and attend English lessons as taught by the Dutch students. S.M. van der Ree There is no formal exam for this module. It is, however, recommended that international students do part of their research in the schools that they visit. International students gain insight into Dutch student life and studying at the Ede Christian University of Applied Sciences. For Dutch students, the aim of this is to use English in everyday interaction and to become familiar with fellow students from different backgrounds. S.M. van der Ree International students are teamed up with Dutch students to gain familiarity with the institute, Ede and its surroundings. International students will also visit primary schools and attend English lessons as taught by the Dutch students. No literature is provided for this.
9 COURSE 8: Dutch Primary Education (field trips & lecture) Weight of the 0.5 ECTS International students will receive (Practical) lectures regarding English language teaching in Dutch primary education. Following this, students will visit several Dutch primary schools to attend English classes. Guest lectures Relevant individual preparation and contribution to the lectures and school visits form the basis of evaluation. Candidates gain insight in Dutch primary school language programmes and teaching.
