Student News Environment Team Fast Fashion Fast fashion is a large factor contributing to the destruction of the environment and climate change. Fast fashion is a term used by fashion retailers for clothing items and designs that move quickly from the runway to stores to follow fashion trends. Fast fashion industries however are contributing to a massive amount of landfill waste and nearly 3000 kilograms of clothes are burned or landfilled every second. As well as this, one cotton shirt takes around 2,700 litres of water to make, which is enough to meet a persons drinking needs for 2 and a half years. As well as the negative environmental impacts, Fast fashions industries also exploit their workers in third world countries. 80% of the workers making the apparel are young women between the ages of 18 and 24 and make about $96 per month. This year, the Environment Team would like to raise awareness on this process and would like to make a difference. Shopping at op shops and buying clothes second hand has many benefits for the environment as well as being a cheaper alternative. As well as buying second hand, donating clothes to charities and op shops or putting them in clothing bins after you no longer want them, is better for the environment than throwing them in the rubbish bin. At Canterbury, we would like to encourage students to think about their impact on the environment and how their decisions can directly affect the future of our planet. Students have traced and dusted their plaque and about to Flood. Flooding is a method of cake decorating where you use Royal icing that is watered down with colour to the right consistency. Whilst our plaques have been drying out ready for design transfer, students have learnt piping skills with both Royal icing to produce beautiful iced biscuits, and then with mini muffins and butter dream build up on these piping skills. The results have been stunning and the students have thoroughly enjoyed this activity. Yr. 10 Advanced Cake Decorating The Year 10s have just completed their nude drip cake. The students thoroughly enjoyed the activity, learnt lots of new skills and spectacular results were achieved. Well done. Fiona Skerrett and Alicia Sands Food and Technology Teachers Middle School Report Year 7 Camp Recently, all of Year 7s headed away to spend some time getting to know each other, some of the Peer Support leaders and some of their teachers at the lovely camp setting of Arrabri Lodge in Warburton. To say it was a bit of a challenge is somewhat an understatement, with 7A, 7B, 7C and 7D having to deal with what was not only a cold 2 days but also some of the wettest weather of any Year 7 Camp in my time here at Canterbury!! A quick rethink of the rotation of activities provided

some shelter from the rain and the opportunity to try a new activity, Toast and Marshmellows. Fortunately, staff and students were prepared to work around (and sometimes through) the showers and all activities were experienced by everyone with the exception of gold panning in the river. 7E, 7F and 7H were lucky in that they had the better part of the weather and consequently did manage to search for gold in the river. However, l have not heard any reports of fortunes being made??!! Photos of the Camps are now available for students to look at on the Gallery on the College website. Happy looking!! A big thank you to our wonderful Year 10 Peer Support leaders Jess C, Piyumi D, Alannah M, Jess P, Mackenzie J, Aya E, Chelsea L, Lily B, Kristen V, Zoe G, Charlotte B and Ruby P; to the Home Group teachers - Ms Plunkett, Ms Toal, Mr Cameron, Ms Johns, Ms Goldsmith, Ms Lumb and Ms Platanas who attended to support each student through this important part of the transition process; and to the other staff who volunteered their attendance so that the Camp could go ahead Mr Bushby, Ms Misquita, Ms Nicholson, Mr Nolan, Ms Sands, Ms Kansal and Ms Odontiadis. Your willingness to be involved is greatly appreciated by all of those who attended. A big shout out to Ms Lisov, who in her role as Year 7 Coordinator attended both camps and in doing so, got to know her student cohort so much better. Thank you also to Ms Gray who put together all of the final camp documentation. Upcoming events Term 1 5 Mar Year 7 Social Evening, Fig Tree, 6.30pm Details will be sent via Newsfeed and families are asked to respond regarding their acceptance. Student Work When walking around the school, you get to see some amazing student work and this was the case when l came across the Geography project of Lily Le, Tara Choi and Christine Yang! What a tasty way to display your work!! Year 9 Community Service The Community Service program for all Year 9 students has kicked off this week. This year we will provide assistance to young children at Canterbury Child Care and to the elderly at Balwyn Evergreen Centre and Kew Gardens. Students are reminded to check the roster board outside the Middle School office and, if they have not yet done so, to return the required permission form. Leanne Bennett Head of Middle School Sport Report NEW - RUNNING CLUB AT CGSC Semester 1: Tuesday and Thursday am I would like to introduce you all and welcome Mr Matt Nolan to CGSC PE staff this semester. Matt Nolan is a middle to long distance runner who has run both track/ field and cross-country. He runs in Athletics Victoria shield and cross-country programs for St. Stephens Harriers, having developed a love for athletics during high school competitions where he met coaches and mentors, who shaped him into the coach and teacher he is today. With previous experience coaching primary and secondary school students for Girls Sport Victoria, Associated Grammar Schools, School Sports Victoria and Junior Development squads with Little Athletics, Matt is a qualified intermediate club and recreational running coach. This semester beginning Week 8 CGSC students will be able to develop their running and athletics ability through before school training in preparation for cross- country and track/ field school events. All ages are welcome to attend to improve their fitness through running, as this will help any sport they are involved in.

I am excited to work with students at Canterbury Girls and develop their enjoyment for running and athletics. Tuesday and Thursday mornings am meet at Tiger Turf, beginning Week 8 March 10. Matt Nolan TERM 1: HOUSE VOLLEYBALL Results Amy Lindeman CGSC Sport Captain has been busy running lunchtimes Volleyball games. I was so excited to see such a huge turnout at house volleyball. It was great to see so many students getting involved, earning points for their house and cheering each other on. The last four weeks have been very busy with Cattanach winning juniors, Flynn winning intermediate and Macdonald winning the seniors events. Amy Lindeman RESULTS: Year 8 Interschool Round Robin, Thursday 20 February Basketball@Waverley Basketball Centre Three teams set out for a competitive day at Year 8 Interschool Sports. The A team won against Camberwell very convincingly 31-6, lost to Doncaster 18-36, had another convincing win against Kew 40-5 and lastly, had a very competitive and intense final game by holding off Balwyn to get a draw The B and C team played in the same pool. The B and C team started by playing one another where the C team came off victorious The B team then won against Kew and Balwyn 43-9 and then lost their final game against Doncaster B team. The C team won against Balwyn and then lost their other two games against Doncaster and Kew and respectively. A special thank you to Ms Ritchie, Natasha Latka and Imogen McKendry for coming along and coaching on the day. Upcoming sporting events Term 1 13 Mar EMR Senior Ringwood Tennis Court 18 Mar Year 7 Division Round Robin (Basketball, Cricket, Softball, Tennis) 25 Mar Ultimate Frisbee Victorian Schools Championships (Year 9-12) 26 Mar EMR Intermediate Volleyball@ State Volleyball Centre, Dandenong Golf: INDIVDUAL ENTRY required. For EMR dates and entry details enter the link: A Team: Sophie Pont, Alice Woods, Lucy Woods, Eliza Scott, Lucy Patel, Angelique Argiros and Cassandra White B Team: Amber Dyason, Emmerson Baker, Ruby Nance, Heidi Vague, Freya Milo and Ellen Cooke C Team: Elina Loghman, Lulu Liu, Mary Rombotis, Abigail West, Brianna Ferdinando, Anna Zangl and Leila Brown Jessica Urbancic and Ally Ritchie Coaches Cricket@Hislop Reserve Two teams of Cricketers played the round robin tournament in the T20 blast format. Some had experience and many came along and learned along the way. An overcast day saw match 1, CGSC play each other. Meredith Holden taking 2 wickets and Annabelle Bowyer-Smyth, Tayah Bongiorno and Ariella Paterson one apiece CGSC B made 5/58. The B Team took 5 wickets with Olivia Preston 2/6, Maya Clennett, Millie Court and Lilou Jolypiel taking one. The A team 5/ 83. Then, CGSC B played Balwyn. Balwyn kept Canterbury to 45 runs only and took 5 wickets. Maya Knight took 2 wickets in the opening two overs and Amber Stephenson contributed 1 wicket, but Balwyn were off to a flyer making 33 runs in that two overs. Hayley finished their innings with 2 wickets and Balwyn were all over 6/100. The final match of the day was Balwyn v. CGSC A Team. The game ended in a draw 11/100!! So we were forced to play a super over. Ava Evans and Meredith Holden paired up to make 13 runs and then Balwyn put their best two batters in and Ava Evans bowled. The Balwyn pair made 13 runs too, so we moved to a second super over. The rules state new players be used so Chloe Hounsell and Annabelle Bowyer-Smyth stepped up, nerves were setting in for both teams.

The students made 1/6 and then Balwyn threw their bats around as the nerves of bowling that over got the better of Meredith Holden and with the requirement of 6 balls needing to be bowled, the over count blew out to 10 and Balwyn made 25 runs. Well done and thanks to Ava Evans and Annabelle Bowyer-Smyth who captained the team and led the way on the day. Team A: Ava Evans, Annabelle Bowyer-Smyth, Meredith Holden, Chloe Hounsell, Tayah Bongiorno, Siena Connaughton, Ariella Paterson, Georgina Calder Team B: Maya Clennett, Millie Court, Ciara Heffernan, Lilou Jolypiel, Amira Kassim, Maya Knight, Olivia Preston, Amber Stephenson, Carly Thompson, Zara White Danielle Miller Coach Softball@Myrtle Park The Year 8 softball team went out to Myrtle Park to play Balwyn HS, Camberwell HS and Kew HS in the year interschool softball round robin. This is our first softball team to have played the new Fully Loaded Softball rules, since the change at the beginning of the year from Softball Australia. The entire team quickly managed to adapt and learn a number of rules throughout the day, leading them to plenty of success. The team s first 2 games were against Balwyn and Kew, both games won by us but were very close only winning by 2 runs. Our final game was against Camberwell and was the decider, throughout all the innings both teams were even in terms of runs and in our final batting innings the team managed to gain an extra 2 runs winning then the game and the overall win for the day. This means the team will progress to the EMR (Eastern Metropolitan Region) later in the year. Congratulations to the entire team: Catherine Bacolas, Jamila Blanchot, Grace Bright, Grace Brown, Riley Cardow, Emma Foulds, Amelia Lin, Georgiana Lew, Bianca Lloyd-Shrimpton, Nikita Rajesh, Sienna Williams. Tabitha Southey Coach Tennis@Boroondara Tennis Centre Three Year 8 Tennis teams represented Canterbury. Avelene Cunliffe helped with coaching the A Team: Laxmi Devarajah, Emily Peeters, Saskia Cunliffe, Momoko Handa, Ruby Misso, Victoria Lac, who finished third in their division. B Team: Grace Latchford, Sienna Valensisi, Hannah Morpeth, Amy Woods, Lucy Merrigan, Aanya Agrawal won the flag in their division. C Team: Grace Dineen, Shirin Kalbasi, Emma Bowles, Isabella Symons, Paige Zajc, Bianca Kerslake Thanks to Sophie Cashin and Avelene Cunliffe who coached on the day. Danielle Miller Coach RESULTS: Intermediate Division Round Robin, Tuesday 25 February Cricket@Hyslop Reserve Two teams of cricketers worked up enough courage to play with the hard ball all 142g of it! Melita Forbes took her duties as captain of the A Team in her stride and was warming up the team and directing all day. The B Team were the inexperienced BUT energetic ones and were led by their coach Alexandra Wong, an experienced cricketer. But they were on a steep learning curve!! Fielding first in the first match - CGSC A v CGSC B - I was able to impart all they needed to know in that first exchange. Chloe Walker took the only wicket in that innings for the B Team. As CGSC A made 1/84 in the 12 overs, we were able to fit in during all the coaching

and directing I was doing!! Then nearly all the B Team players got the chance to pad up in their first ever batting innings. Emilion Clark and Caitlin Rowling took honours with 2 wickets each and B Team were 9/52 after 12 overs. Then Balwyn played our B Team. Balwyn were 3/104 after 20 overs, including 41 extras. Ella Monaghan and Olivia Jackson top scored against Balwyn with 15 and 13 runs respectively. Ella Monaghan getting caught in her pads each time she ran, which provided endless entertainment to us all. Balwyn finished that game 5/60. The final match of the day CGSC A v Balwyn, which was a tight and stressful encounter. We floundered early, losing 3 wickets in the fourth over. Stressing the need for communication and confident calling the settled to post a score of 7/56 after 15 overs Caitlin Rowling 14, Melita Forbes 13. Then CGSC came in to bowl, Melita Forbes opened and we got our first wicket (bowled), then Emilion Clark followed up in the second over with a catch, with 2/7. The Balwyn batters settled and another break-through in the form of a run-out in the ninth over, but in the eleventh over they made the required runs 3/59. Team A: Melita Forbes, Caitlin Rowling, Georgia Sneddon, Emilion Clark, Romy Lynam, Caitlin Carpenter, Gemma Maltby, Sophie Wang, Lily McCahon, Elena Simopoulos and Caitlin Taylor Team B: Ella Monaghan, Mia Giulieri, Mieka Tuminello, Olivia Jackson, Olivia Neish, Alexandra Sek, Chloe Walker, Madeline Wenn, Talia Dunstan, Yu Ya Aung, Grace Adams Thanks to Nick Bavcar and Alexandra Wong who scored and coached during the day. Danielle Miller Coach Softball@Myrtle Park Our Intermediate softball team went out to Myrtle Park to play their round robin game against Balwyn HS, Camberwell HS and Kew HS. With many students from other teams with players who play, our team put up a fantastic fight against their opponents. Throughout the day, there were huge improvements from game to game and our team managed to come out with a win against Kew High School in a very close match, finishing 3rd overall for the day. Well done to the entire team for their efforts on the day! Tabitha Southey Coach Tennis@Boroondara Tennis Centre On Tuesday 25 February, eight Canterbury students from Years 9 and 10 headed off to Boroondara Tennis Centre for the Intermediate Tennis Competition. Both teams A and B played exceptionally well against schools such as Balwyn High, Doncaster Secondary College, Camberwell High and Kew High, finishing runners-up to Balwyn in both sections. A great day was had by all, and thankfully the weather held off for most of the day! Jana Fabris Coach Intermediate Volleyball The year 9/10 A and B Volleyball teams competed at Districts at the local venue of Kew High School. It was a great day for all Canterbury teams, with some exceptional volleyball being played. The CGSC A Team won convincingly against Camberwell High, Balwyn, and Doncaster. The A s toughest match was against Kew, but as a strong side, Canterbury came along with the win. The CGSC B team

had an extraordinary day as well. They played amazingly as a team, and really encouraged each other. The B team could not be beaten, so both the A s and B s went undefeated in their divisions. Overall, it was a great day, Canterbury was unstoppable! Olivia McCredie,Year 9 Coach House Swimming Boroondara Sports Complex, Thursday 27 February The whole school event is a big day. There is no cost to participate in this event. Many ensembles including concert bands, orchestras and choirs amongst others have two rehearsal days. More advanced groups rehearse outside of school hours. Applications for large ensembles need to be completed by parents/guardians online at by Thursday 19 March. Application information will be advertised to students in rehearsals, lessons, on Compass Newsfeed and in the following issue of Upbeat. Students and parent/guardians are encouraged to apply in a timely fashion as positions in the ensembles fill fast. Please see additional flyers at the end of this. New Concert Structure This year, there are some changes to our usual music concert program and fundraising. In previous years we have used the Spring Brunch to raise money for the music department, however the Spring Brunch is now going to occur every two years. This year we will fundraise through two different concerts the Junior/Autumn Concert on Thursday 7 May and a themed concert to be held in Term 4. These two events will continue to raise money for the purchase of orchestral chimes. Labelling of musical instruments - This is a reminder to parents and students that their instruments need to be labelled with their surname and mobile number or CGSC/ There are many instruments in identical cases and it becomes very distressing for all when a student accidentally collects the wrong instrument. Purchase of clarinet and saxophone reeds - A box of 10 clarinet or saxophone reeds can be purchased from the Music Office for $40. Cost of single reed $4.00. Students need to purchase a number of reeds throughout the year and this is your cheapest option. Money should be placed in a named envelope and handed to your teacher. Compass/Tuition All lessons will appear on Compass in advance. Please contact us immediately should you have any difficulty locating your daughter s lesson details. If during the

music upbeat course of the term you would like to talk to your daughter s instrumental teacher, staff can be contacted directly via the Music Office. If unavailable at that time, they will make return contact as soon as possible. Please be mindful that many of our staff are only at CGSC for a day or so and are teaching in other schools on other days. They may not be able to access compass at other times. Enrolments for If your daughter has still not yet enrolled in the music program at CGSC and would like to do so, there are places available on some instruments. How to Enrol 1. the following details to Natasha Anderson nan@cgsc.vic.edu.au NAME IN FULL: YEAR LEVEL IN 2020: INSTRUMENT: ENSEMBLE/S: 2. You will be prompted to pay the enrolment/ensemble/theory fees on Compass 3. Once payment has been made, the student will be enrolled into lesson and ensemble classes on Compass. Please note: Tuition cannot begin until payment has been made. Ensemble participation - All students learning an instrument at school are reminded that participation in the appropriate ensemble is a requirement by both the school and the North Eastern Victorian Region. Ensemble is an assessment task and forms part of the reporting process in all reporting cycles. Playing in an ensemble is a great opportunity to learn new skills and work together with other students. Thinking about joining an ensemble in 2020? Students learning an instrument outside the school are most welcome and strongly encouraged to join an ensemble including the many different bands, string ensembles, orchestra, choirs or guitar ensemble. There is an annual payment of $120 for ensemble participation which assists us with the purchase of music and running costs. There are many ensembles available for all students, however some smaller ensembles may require an audition. Theory - Theory tuition will be offered for Grades 1, 2, 3 and 4 this year and classes have already commenced. Classes are held Wednesday pm in C19 as well as Friday mornings from 8am am. Theory classes will run until the middle of Term 4. This extra class is an excellent way to improve and consolidate reading skills. Students completing higher grades with their instrument may be required to complete theory examinations to satisfy practical exam pre-requisites. All students will complete a theory quiz in the first class to determine prior knowledge and if they are enrolled in the most appropriate grade level. Students completing grades early in the year are able to move on directly to the next grade if they wish. Please bring a pencil and an eraser to the first class. Enrolment forms can be obtained from the music office. Please see Ms Farnan for more details. Absence from Music - If you know your daughter is going to be absent for a rehearsal, please advise the conductor of that group in advance. We are required to know where students are until we dismiss them. Absence from any music classes is recorded the same as for other subject class. ANZAC Day parade - The CGSC will again take part in the Anzac Day parade this year. More details to follow. Michael Sword Head of Music
