Hari, Prof. Satyaki Roy and Dr. S Devadoss Suggestions and Recommendations 1.0 Introduction: This project on 'Creating Digital-learning Environment for Design' also called 'e-kalpa' is sponsored by the Ministry of Human Resources, Government of India as part of the National Mission in Education through Information and Communication Technology. The overall objective is the creation and development of new learning environments related to design that will provide greater access and enhancement to acquisition of critical knowledge, skills, and abilities for economic and social development in our country. The proposal would focus on knowledge accumulation, storing and dissemination and education in four sectors - university, industry, government and the informal sector. Scalability: 1.1) The project has great potentials and the effort done till now needs to be continued with scalable options both in terms of content creation as well as dissemination. Language Options: 1.2) At certain stage of Project, conversion of English to local languages should be enabled to benefit local artisans/ institutes of different states of India. This should be taken up in the next phase of the project. Design for School Children: 1.3) Gradually, extend this for school children to increase their exposure, which will especially enable them to discover professions apart from conventional ones at an early stage in life. These initiatives will be based on the use of information and communications technology. 2.0 Rationale: Creating Clusters:

2 At present, in education of design, there are around design institutes and over 100 commercial art colleges in India. This number is expected to grow exponentially in the next few years. It is probable that India will have over 300 design colleges by 2015 and over 1000 by There are physical and financial constraints on the capacity increase in these institutions by way of face-to-face traditional education. This proposal represents a viable community of institutions that is motivated to create innovative learning environments that can deal with the kind of growth in the design sector in the coming years. This initiative is designed to nurture, grow and develop this community. The outcome of this project should also expose the non-formal sector of the society about quality consciousness through the fundamental understanding of design. 3.0 Participating Institutions: First Phase (May 2011 till December 2012): This initiative 'e-kalpa' is being collaboratively developed by the three institutions - IDC at IIT Bombay, NID at Bangalore and DOD at IIT Guwahati as the principal partners in the first phase. - Pilot Project sanctioned in April Main Project sanctioned in May 2011 Second Phase (Januray 2012 onwards): In the second phase, the project will seek as associate partners the support of other design related institutions (IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IISc, Sristi, IICD, Mit Institute of Design, Sir JJ Institute of Applied Arts, Baroda School of Arts and others) and other related organizations. 2.1) To enable such an ambition, create clusters within India and showcase by workshop/ videoconference the courses and resources related to design. Such interaction will enable exposure of expert work/ technique. This can be done in the next phase of the project. Showcase Master Craftsman: 2.2) Showcase more number of master craftsmen, shilpagurus, etc. and enable interested visitors to connect back to the artisans/art/craft groups being documented. Document Classical Art Forms: 2.3) Along with these resources, good documentation of classical art forms is also necessary. Additional Collaborators: 3.1) Use collaborators outside (of the aforementioned ones, such as private/foreign institutions) based on topic to develop courses. Including other institutions such as schools of art is a good idea. Identify art and craft hubs within India and associate them/their work for mutual benefit. This could be done in the next phase of the project. Outsourcing: 3.2) Think of strategies to develop a system for outsourcing some parts of the project so that the output can be scaled up. External expertise: 3.3) Involve senior/retired professionals as collaborators in their fields of expertise. 4.0 e-kalpa Focus Areas Achievements so far: Good Attempt: 4.1.1) Very good attempt. Make it large and popular.

Support to other initiatives of NMEICT suggestions for design of websites, logo, naming, etc. Navigation: 4.1.1) Navigation/ Searching/ Classification of content should: - be designed in several layers/multiple ways to facilitate all kinds of visitors those exploring or those searching - enable a student to develop his/her own course. - be organized on basis of difficulty level i.e. primer to difficult. - have courses in a sequential manner, or in the form of modules. - categorize on the basis of related topics from the start. - include recommended links and find more Quiz: 4.1.2) Every module must have a quiz to self evaluate learning. Motifs in India: 4.2.1) Motif and pattern generation, collection of existing art/design heritage of different states of India. Copyright Issues: 4.2.3) Consider copyright issues that might arise in future. Interactions: 4.2.4) Interaction between artisan-consumer and retailer. Social Networking: 4.3.1) Good. Make a system to sustain this activity over a long period of time. Need to collaborate with more Institutions throughout India. Scale up: 8.2) As mentioned before, this project activity needs to be scaled up so that there is a considerable amount of content available in the domain of design.
