1 Student Veterans Association at Arizona State University (Tempe) Business Plan Mission Statement To ensure the success of Veterans in higher education and beyond Goals, Objectives, & Strategies Goal 1: Make ASU the most supportive environment for Veterans in the Classroom Objective 1.A: Teacher/Faculty Outreach Strategy: Individual Interactions Component 1 - Encourage personal interactions between faculty / staff and club members to raise awareness of Veterans in the classroom Component 2 - Offer to meet with individual faculty / staff members to help understand how to be supportive of the Veterans in their classrooms Component 3 - Identify connections between individual professor s work and other programs / initiatives at ASU Strategy: Departmental Interactions Component 1 - Meet with department heads, deans on case by case basis to determine specific needs within different programs Component 2 - Help coordinate interaction between departments to ensure Veterans are guaranteed a basic level of services regardless of major or discipline Strategy: Campus Wide Events Component 1 - Participate in faculty / staff training programs, such as those sponsored by the PTVC 1 Objective 1.B: Non-Veteran Student Outreach Strategy: Coordinate joint community service opportunities Phase 1- Identify target student organizations such as the Hispanic Business Students Association, Silver Wings 2, SERVE 3, etc 1 The Pat Tillman Veterans Center, the administrations one-stop shop for Veterans services
2 Phase 2- coordinate with their mentoring, youth programs, tutoring opportunities, and general community service events Strategy: Coordinate joint social events Phase 1- Identify target student organizations to include Greek Life, Outdoors Club, MMA Club, GunDevils 4, etc Phase 2 - plan joint activities / mixers / etc, dependent upon organizations scope Strategy: Increasing campus footprint Component 1 - Leverage local media sources to spread message and encourage dialog Component 2 - Identify and participate in campus activities with the aim of forging relationships with non-veteran students. Goal 2: Create sustainable growth model for club to thrive in the long term Objective 2.A: Increase membership Strategy: Develop semester / Year / 5 Year recruitment goals Phase 1 - President and Board Identify Recruitment Coordinator Phase 2 - Recruitment Coordinator meets with President and develops Recruitment Strategy for the Semester NLT 1 month prior to start of Semester Phase 3 - Vice-President Supervises enactment of recruitment strategy in accordance with plan Strategy: Increase Club awareness on campus Component 1 - Speak to incoming Veterans during Veteran Orientation Component 2 - Establish a recurring meeting location, and time, and include that information on all fliers Component 3 - Utilize SVA 5 marketing materials, as well as internally developed marketing materials (including posters and lawn signs) in high trafficked areas such as the PTVC around the MU, and around Hayden 2 Tandem professional student organization of non-veteran, non-rotc students, that works with Air Force ROTC program on community service oriented projects 3 Student organization at the Barrett Honors College, comprised of non-veteran students with the goal of helping the student Veteran population on campus 4 Student Organization at ASU centered around shooting sports and gun rights 5 Student Veterans of America
3 Component 4 - Place leadership at key events throughout the course of the semester, as determined by the President Strategy: Create Pipeline from Community College to ASU Component 1 - Support establishment and growth of SVA chapters at local community colleges Component 2 - Work with both SVA chapters and administration of local community colleges to sell our message to prospective members Component 3 - Work with PTVC to ensure that Veterans coming from the community colleges step foot on day 1 equipped to succeed Objective 2.B: Develop sustainable fundraising model independent of USG 6 Funds Strategy: Building Revenue Generators Component 1 - Utilizing web / social media presence to drive internet based sales Component 2 - Develop and market club branded products that are unique and viable in the marketplace Component 3 - Ensure that board members have easy access to accepting funds (via square / paypal buttons) and that they are in a selling mode during club sponsored events Strategy: Grants Phase 1 - President and Financial Chair identify pool of grants, and subscribe to sites that disclose grant postings Phase 2 - President designates which grants the club is to pursue, in accordance with goals identified by business plan Phase 3 - Financial Chair, with assistance as needed, drafts grant proposals Phase 4 - President Submits grant proposals and takes appropriate follow up actions Strategy: Fundraising Component 1 - President outreaches with local business community and local leaders to identify potential donors Component 2 - President solicits donations from private individuals and businesses with regard to boards direction and fiscal needs as defined by the budget Component 3 - Club holds fund raising functions such as golf tournaments, end of year balls, car washes, etc., as directed by board in order to fulfill fiscal requirements of budget 6 Undergraduate Student Government at ASU
4 Component 4 - Leverage website to allow for donations at any time, from any place Objective 2.C: Create Value for Club Members Strategy: Connect Veterans to Resources at the Campus, State, and Federal Levels Component 1 - Work with PTVC, Disability Resource Center, Counseling and Services, Tutoring Centers, and other ASU resources to establish POC s 7, and a free flowing of information from ASU to the individual Component 2 - Work with AZDVS 8, Arizona Student Veterans Coalition, Governor s Veterans Advisory Council, as well as local and federally elected officials to get the most up to date information about state resources Component 3 - Work with local Veterans Administration (VA) office, VFW 9, Legion 10, DAV 11, Wounded Warriors, SVA national, and other national partners to ensure that members are appraised of current developments, opportunities, and timely information Strategy: Identify what Veterans at ASU want and need to be successful Phase 1 - Work with PTVC to develop and conduct survey Phase 2 - Leverage available resources to distribute survey Phase 3 - President evaluates results of survey and distributes information to other ASU SVA leaders, and executive board Phase 4 - Board incorporates survey results into business plan Strategy: Create Programs and hold events that provide value to the individual and community Component 1: Using data collected over the past 15 months, hold social events and physical fitness activities that are desired by membership. Continue to collect data during ongoing social event and physical fitness activities Component 2: Work with Office of Veterans Academic Engagement to continue model of Veterans in Higher Education Panel, with aim of identifying issues and providing a forum to propose solutions 7 Point of Contact s 8 Arizona Department of Veterans Services, the state agency responsible for Veterans affairs 9 Veterans of Foreign Wars 10 American Legion 11 Disabled American Veterans
5 Component 3: Work with Veterans Case workers of elected officials to hold informative sessions on how to best access Veterans benefits Component 4: Work with other campus leaders, other SVA leaders to identify potential new programs and events to try at ASU Objective 2.D: Ensure for Seamless transitions between leadership Strategy: Financial Transition Planning Component 1 - Create Semester and Year Long Budgets, at least 60 days prior to start date Component 2 - Financial Chair ensures that other board members are keeping budget up to date Component 3 - Financial Chair ensures that bookkeeping is done in a clear and concise manner so that other members are able to fill in during times of duress Strategy: Records Keeping Component 1 - Clean up contact list so that all board members know who the right people are and how to contact them Component 2 - Reorganize Google Drive, ensuring that members have access to data and relevant documents and form Strategy: Left Seat / Right Seat Approach Phase 1-60 days out, President holds meeting to address leadership succession plan Phase days out, Transitioning leaders identify potential replacements and start incorporating them into their work Phase 3-30 days out, Transitioning leaders and their identified replacements jointly attend meetings, ensure replacements know where to find applicable information, and that they are prepared to take over Phase 4-1 week out, new leaders take over, with transitioning leaders serving in an advisory role Goal 3: Advocate for Policies that empower Veterans in the classroom and beyond Objective 3.A: Increase Federal Veterans Benefits Strategy: Support SVA National Agenda Phase 1 - President Converses with SVA national Rep s to see what their legislative agenda is
6 Phase 2 - President meets with members of Arizona delegation to push for SVA agenda Phase 3 - Continue advising Arizona congressional delegation on Veterans matters as they develop Objective 3.B: Make Arizona the Most Veteran friendly State Strategy: Develop Arizona Legislative Agenda Phase 1 - During recess, Identify top issues facing Veterans in AZ Phase 2 - During recess, coordinate with members of Veterans Caucus 12, and Arizona Student Veterans Coalition in developing legislative agenda Phase 3 - During session, support Veteran friendly legislation, and testify / write letters as needed Strategy: Leverage state resource to improve quality of life on campuses Component 1 - Meet with Arizona Board of Regents 13 to ensure Veterans are being heard Component 2 - Work with AZDVS to ensure state resources are being used to benefit student Veterans and not bureaucratic institutions Objective 3.C: Make ASU the most Veteran Supportive College Strategy: Work for increased services on campus Component 1 - Work with Office of Veterans Academic Engagement 14 to provide student voice, and push for supportive policies Component 2 - Work with PTVC to provide student voice, and advice on programs Strategy: Create Veterans specific academic programs Component 1 - Work with Office of Veterans Academic Engagement and McCain Institute to help assist efforts towards creating leadership programs Component 2 - Support PTVC sponsored Veterans success courses Component 3 - Identify and push for areas of expansion Strategy: Create Veterans specific employment opportunities Component 1 - Leverage relationship with Canon 15 Printing Services to create fellowship program 12 Bipartisan, Bicameral caucus in the AZ State Legislature comprised solely of Veterans, with the goal of advancing Veteran friendly legislation 13 Governing body for Arizona s public universities 14 New administrative office at ASU, designed to coordinate efforts in the Veterans arena 15 Canon printing is responsible for all of the printing services at the ASU Tempe Campus
7 Component 2 - Identify and pursue other work-study and internship positions in ASU and within the local business community
