3 Welcome to Griffith Global Mobility Griffith Global Mobility has something for everyone Many of our programs come with scholarships or partial funding and can be as short as 1 week and up to 1 year long. As a Griffith student you have a unique opportunity to enhance your degree through a global learning experience that is fully structured and supported by a dedicated Global Mobility Team. You can spend as little as one week or as long as one year overseas in one or more of 48 countries on offer. Your experience abroad will both enrich and diversify your degree and provide you with a great opportunity to absorb and experience a different life and culture in a new learning environment. Student Exchange + Study Abroad Useful Tip Semester Swap places with a student from a partner university overseas for Exchange one or two semesters, or during the semester break, and gain credit for your international study toward your Griffith degree. Study Study at a university of your choice if you can t find an exchange Abroad partner that suits your degree. Study Abroad can be short term or semester long programs. *Subject to international student visa regulations and credit approval. Fees apply.. Industry Affiliates Program (IAP) Final year Science, Environment, Engineering and Technology students can develop work-ready skills with the aim of undertaking an industry based project in conjunction with an international organisation or with one of the Griffith exchange partner universities overseas. Save your electives for global mobility as this gives you more options and flexibility. Short Term Global Experience Faculty Led Selected Griffith courses include an embedded international Short Term study tour to diverse locations, including but not limited to: Laos, Indonesia, India, Japan, China, Nepal and Egypt. Internships/ Undertake work experience with an international host company WIL for a few weeks or months. Summer/ Progress your studies in semester breaks with an international Winter summer or winter exchange at one of our many partner Exchange institutions across the world. Volunteering Help others and gain valuable experience volunteering in countries and projects across the world. Coordinated programs running over a few weeks to months are available. You may even enrol in Griffith s 10 CP Community Internship Program to gain credit for your volunteering experience. Clinical Options to undertake your clinical placements with partners Placements around the globe. Pharmacy, Nursing, Medicine and Dentistry all offer the opportunity for a period of overseas clinical placement. With over 50 exchange partners in the region students can complete an exchange semester in some of Asia s leading cities, such as Tokyo, Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Mumbai and Hyderabad. Griffith s short term programs in Asia, including field visits, internships and volunteering placements are a unique way to engage with Asia from 1 week to 10 weeks. Short term places are available in Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, Japan, Nepal and Indonesia. The Australian Government s commitment to Australia in the Asian Century means that employers are increasingly looking for graduates who are Asialiterate. Griffith is a recipient of funds through the Australian Government grants program that support students in conducting short term placements in Asia. There has never been a better time to consider Asia as part of your global mobility experience. I participated in the Griffith Exchange Program for my second time, travelling to Hong Kong to study at the University of Hong Kong. Being able to study and live abroad has been a fantastic experience and it has certainly been the highlight of my degree Ethan Bowering University of Hong Kong Global Community Internships Griffith Global Mobility works in partnership with the Griffith Institute of Higher Education in the facilitation of the Community Internship program which can be used as a 10CP free-choice elective. This program is composed of two parts: VOLUNTEERING - a key component is a minimum 50 hour volunteering activity for community benefit. Students make a selection from a range of projects available through the University, or bring their own volunteering activity. ACADEMIC LEARNING - a suite of learning experiences - lectures, self-paced modules, and tutorials - to help students explore a range of issues that impact on the way they interact with their communities as graduates and citizens. Why not use this program to volunteer internationally? To be eligible for the Community Internship students must be enrolled in a Griffith University degree program and have completed the equivalent of the first year of full-time studies at the time of application. For more information students are encouraged to contact the course convenor for an appointment to discuss their options. OS Help funding and travel grants and scholarships may be available for students enrolled in this unique program. It broadened my social conscience, I saw how my actions make a real impact on a child s life, and it influenced my career. It opened my eyes to inclusive practice which is now a life-long commitment for my personal and professional life. 7 Follow these steps: 1 Start planning at least 9-12 months in advance. Attend a Griffith Global Mobility information session and browse program options online: 5 Apply for student/travel visa Confirm flights and accommodation Register your travel with Smart Traveller: smartraveller.gov.au 2 Complete the application procedure for semester exchange or the registration process for all other programs, in addition to any credit applications/study plans by the deadline. Semester exchange deadlines: 1. Exchange in Semester 1: First week in July 2. Exchange in Semester 2: Last week in January Short term program deadlines: Dates vary. Update your overseas address on the Griffith Portal Who can go? Eligibility To be eligible to participate you need to meet the following requirements: 1. Be enrolled in a degree program at Griffith in the semester of application. 2. Have successfully completed at least 10 credit points for a short term program; 60 credit points for a semester/year exchange; or 40 credit points for postgraduate exchange, in your current degree. 3. Meet specific program requirements set by Griffith Global Mobility and/or your host school. 5. Have approval to participate in the program from your host school at Griffith. International students: Visa restrictions may apply in some host countries. International students must also comply with the conditions relating to their studies at Griffith University. Those who intend to apply for post study work rights visa after their period of study, should check if the period of time overseas on their program will impact their eligibility to apply. Sponsored students should consult with the Sponsorship office before applying to confirm eligibility. 3 4 Once accepted by Griffith Global Mobility you will receive instructions on how to register with the host institution overseas (if applicable) as well as information regarding insurance, travel grants and pre-departure. Check eligibility and apply for your OS-Help Loan by the deadline: 1 May and 30 June: For a six month study period that commences between 1 July and 31 December in that year; or 1 October and 30 November: For a six month study period that commences between 1 January and 30 June the following year. * Australian citizens only 7 Upon your return Complete the Griffith Global Mobility evaluation for your chance to win! 8 Funding your Global Mobility Living Costs The total cost of your overseas experience will depend on where you go, for how long and your travel plans. In most cases you will need to pay for flights, accommodation, living expenses, visas and study costs. Tuition Fees If doing an exchange, you pay tuition fees to Griffith, however, many of our partners will require you to pay a student union/ activity fee. All other programs will require fees to be paid directly to the host institution or coordinating organisation. If the program is credited by Griffith or is a Griffith faculty-led/study tour the program convenor will advise of payment obligations. Centrelink Payments Full time students may continue to receive Centrelink benefits whilst participating in mobility programs. Speak with Centrelink for more information. OS-HELP Loans *Australian citizens only The Commonwealth Government gives a number of OS-HELP loans to the University annually to help eligible students undertake part of their study overseas. The amount that a student can request for a six-month overseas study period can be up to AU$8,500, depending on the program and destination. Eligibility criteria apply. Australian Government Grants Griffith Global Mobility is awarded funding from the Australian Government each year. These grants are paid to individual students going on a semester/year abroad exchange only and are assessed based on destination choice and often academic merit. There are no separate applications as students are automatically considered as a part of the application process. These grants are only available to Australian citizens. International Experience Incentive Scheme (IEIS): Funded by the Griffith Vice Chancellor, the IEIS travel grants are to assist with some of the costs of studying abroad. The grants can be up to $800 for a short term experience, and up to $5000 for a semester/year exchange. The scholarships are allocated depending on the program, the credit points awarded, or on academic merit. Partner University Scholarships: Many of the exchange partner universities provide scholarships for students coming to their institutions. School Specific Scholarships: Some Griffith Schools and academic elements will offer top up scholarships or other funding to support mobility participation. Details are often included on the Griffith Global Mobility website or students can also inquire with the school for specific opportunities. For the full details on all funding schemes, visit the Griffith Global Mobility funding and scholarship website: / financial-information Useful Tip If you re concerned about the cost of study overseas, check the Griffith website for funding and scholarship options or speak with one of the Griffith Mobility team for advice. With proper planning, lack of finances should not stop you going! GET Prepared Health and Safety Insurance - All Griffith students undertaking approved mobility programs are covered under the Griffith Corporate Travel policy. This cover will need to be considered for each individual program and country to ensure it meets local needs. Travel Warnings - The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade website provides a useful summary of the safety situation and travel advice for all countries. Check this site to ensure it is safe to travel to your chosen destination. More information can be found at: smartraveller.gov.au International SOS Registration - Griffith uses the services of International SOS for all mobility students. As an International SOS member you receive extended medical and safety assistance 24/7 no matter where you live or travel internationally. Vaccinations - Check with your GP if you need specific vaccinations and ensure you leave sufficient time for these to take effect. Your Visa Most countries require a student visa that needs to be arranged in advanced. You can apply for a visa once you have been accepted by your host institution. Accommodation Many partners will arrange on-campus accommodation for you, if it is available, and assist you to find off campus housing if that is your preference.
