Many of the design features that were developed for the SINGULUS V have been incorporated into the new SKYLINE II. With more than 1400 SKYLINE systems operated by customers around the world, the SKYLINE CD/DVD 5 replication line has become recognized as the undisputed benchmark for CD/DVD 5 production. The compact SINGULUS V metallizer and the use of servo drives allow a remarkable reduction of foot print. With a length of 1.35 m, a width of 1.09 m and the location of the downstream at the front side of the molding machine, the SKYLINE II can be easily integrated into production facilities for optical discs. New DMS EVOLUTION from SINGULUS OMP officially launched during technical seminar in Eindhoven The official launching of the new SINGULUS OMP mastering system, DMS EVOLUTION, was marked by a technical seminar held in Eindhoven on February 27th. This seminar was attended by representatives from mastering facilities throughout Europe and a number of customers even travelled from Asia to attend this special and unique event. The new system was officially unveiled after several presentations highlighting the technological advances of the DMS EVOLUTION and showing how the existing DMS concept has been further developed to provide a unique system, specifically designed for the mastering of DVD and recordable/ rewritable formats. A new metallizer using Nickel Vanadium targets has been developed to meet the stringent demands of mastering for recordable formats whilst also ensuring increased quality for CD/DVD mastering. This metallizer was designed together with the metallization experts of SINGULUS TECHNOLOGIES AG, Kahl/ Germany, and offers clear process advantages, including the avoidance of cross-linking associated with Nickel sputtering of photo-resist masters. The system is available in a number of configurations, ranging from a 2x/1R entry level CD/DVD switchable system to a system having two 6x/2R CD/DVD Laser Beam Recorders, that offers unrivalled productivity for minimum capital investment. The day also included a visit to the SINGULUS OMP facility in Best, during which guests were given a tour of the production and development facilities and were able to witness the production of high quality DVD discs using SINGULUS OMP stampers in combination with a SINGULUS SKYLINE Duplex and a SINGULUS EMOULD injection molding machine. The first DMS EVOLUTION has already been installed at Prime Disc, a subsidiary of Eastgate, in Hong Kong and a second installation at EMI Compact Disc S.p.A in Italy is currently being carried out. Orders for the DMS EVOLUTION have also been received from customers in Pakistan and China. The DMS EVOLUTION features a newly designed Laser Beam Recorder which works in combination with pit manipulation functionality to provide excellent jitter performance and process control for disc cosmetic aspects.

Actual market surveys reveil that DVDRs are right now turning into a mass medium accepted by consumers around the world faster than the widespread CD-Rs before. For unparalleled fast and economical production of all types of recordable DVD media SINGULUS developed new process modules and offers now the advanced manufacturing system STREAMLINE DVDR/SP-A with a guaranteed process cycle time of less than 4.5 seconds. The machine is already designed for faster disc transport cycles, thus offering a high productivity potential for the future. In addition to the latest machine technology, SINGULUS can also provide all necessary process know-how for fast Two dye modules with four dye cups in total are now applied for DVDR production leading to generous process cycle times even in the case of slowly evaporating dye solvents which are applied in certain dye processes. This purchase is yet another indication of the rapid acceptance of DVD in areas traditionally dominated by VHS tapes. CINE MAGNETICS VIDEO & DIGITAL LABORATORIES has facilities in Armonk, NY and Studio City, CA, with branch offices in New York City and New England. They specialize in the duplication of videocassettes and in optical disc replication to meet the requirements of business, industry, education and specialty markets, where there has been a strong trend away from VHS towards DVD. The integrators showed interest mainly in the EMOULD DVD for new installations, while the direct orders from replicators had a larger portion in EMOULD CD, e.g. for replacing hydraulic machines. This reflects the huge acceptance and interest in the EMOULD all electric molding machine in the market. Besides CD and DVD replication, CINE MAGNETICS offers DVD authoring, video on demand, language replacement and subtitling, custom package design and printing, 800# inbound order capturing, electronic credit card processing, database management, e-commerce integration and distribution services for entertainment, business, industry, education and special interest organizations. An Atomic Force Microscope is used to investigate pit geometries; hardware components, e.g. the mirror of a mold, can be precisely checked for any material defects as well. Finally, the transfer of the process know-how to the replicators will enable them to produce high quality discs and to achieve profitable business. In 2003 SINGULUS EMOULD will continue to sell the EMOULD to integrators as well as directly to replicators. Initial orders have arrived in the first quarter of this year. The adoption of the EMOULD to any replication line is very easy; for most of the replication lines the interface as well as some software modifications have been standardized and are available.

In October 2002, Dr. Bernhard Cord joined SINGULUS as Product Manager for the technological development of the MODULUS multilayer sputtering system and the SUNLINE replication line. Dr. Cord received his Ph. D. in Physics, and in 1985 began working in R&D for thin film deposition technology at Leybold Corporation in Germany, where he specialized in magnetic and optical thin films for data storage applications. He continued this work as R&D manager at Balzers Process Systems and at UNAXIS. He has published many papers on magnetic storage layer deposition, and owns several patents. Dr. Cord is excited to join the worldwide Rewritable Optical Disc Manufacturing Group, and feels their mission will be to "revolutionize video-making/watching and movie-going behaviors by establishing the convenient optical disc recording as the easy-to-make-and-distribute medium for personal use."
