Managing Across Generations July 31, 8:30 11:30 a.m. Today, the typical workplace population includes several generations. Managers need to understand what makes their younger and older employees tick. HR s Associate Vice Chancellor, Faith Perkins, leads this workshop on how to help managers motivate and communicate across the age gap. Budget Manager Training Compensation Staff Luncheon TCU Compensation Staff, Presenters June 6, noon 1:00 p.m. Kelly Center, Cox A Quarterly update over lunch for TCU budget managers only. TCU Common Reading Discussion July 30, noon 1:00 p.m. Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood is told through the personal, original drawings of Marjane Satrapi. The book examines Satrapi s family and the politics of Iran during the Islamic Revolution. Engage with the whole TCU community and discuss this funny, historical, heartbreaking memoir told from a child s point of view. Conversations with TCU Faculty In their scholarship and teaching, TCU faculty tackle fascinating, relevant questions about the world we live in. Here s your chance to hear about the ideas and challenges that inspire their lives. To be or not to be a Black Hole August 6, noon 1:00 p.m. Tucker 139 Black holes are strange objects in the cosmos. Objects that seemingly can trap anything and everything, even light, in their grasp. In this talk you will learn some black hole basics but also some of the scientific controversy surrounding our attempts to understand them, including a lost bet by famed theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking involving a baseball encyclopedia(!)
4 HUMAN RESOURCES Wellness Healthy Eating with Amy Goodson Join Amy Goodson, MS, LD, sports dietitian for TCU Athletics and Ben Hogan Sports Therapy Institute, at these monthly lunch-time meetings. Amy plans pre/ post-game meals for TCU athletes, writes training table menus, and works on a variety of sports nutrition resources. She is a member of the American Dietetic Association, Texas Dietetic Association, and SCAN (Sports, Cardiovascular, and Wellness Nutritionists. Amy presents Travel Lite June 30, noon 1:00 p.m. Going on vacation and hanging out at the pool/beach all summer can often foster poor eating habits like grabbing fast food and eating on the go. Join Amy as she covers healthy snack options at the beach, in the car and on a plane. Learn how NOT to pack on the pounds over your summer vacations and family outings. Amy presents Beat the Heat July 14, noon 1:00 p.m. Summer is brutal in Texas, and many people think water is the only thing that can hydrate them. Amy says that fluid can be obtained from food, too! She ll cover healthy drinks and eats in this fun session. Come learn how to creatively hydrate yourself and your family this summer with veggies, chilled soups and more. How-To Know-How How to Protect Yourself from Financial Predators June 5, noon 1:00 p.m. BLUU, Beck & Geren United Way Assistant VP Sue Matkin shows how to guard against financial predators looking to get your money. Learn how to recognize predators and scams, prevent ID theft, and the steps you can take to guard against being victimized. How to Plan Your Next Trip June 25, noon 1:00 p.m. Library B29 Gear up for your next holiday with tips from librarian, Diana Boerner. Take the stress out of trip-planning and use the free sources available to staff in the Mary Couts Burnett Library. Tour the databases and discover new tricks to save you time and money! How to Plant a Butterfly Garden July 23, noon 1:00 p.m. Library B29 Make your garden look gorgeous and help increase the butterfly population at the same time. Learn which flowering plants attract butterflies, where to situate them, and what time of year to get started. Librarian Diana Boerner brings us up to speed in this interesting class. Camp Fire on Campus Camp Fire is one of the oldest child and youth development resource and referral services in Texas. TCU partners with the organization to help with parenting skills and childcare needs. Both parents welcome to attend these important presentations. Calling all book-lovers: a series of presentations by authors and readers alike. Whether you re a budding writer keen to find out how to write a best seller, or a reader who s just plain interested to hear what others find worth reading, this is the lunch-time session for you.
