4 orders went once again in the dry bulk segment, where 38 bulkers were ordered, together with 12 tankers, 9 gas tankers, 5 liners, 2 containers, 2 car carriers and 10 special projects). The newbuilding activity was 50% up week-on-week and 457% up year-on-year. The largest volume of newbuilding activity is reported in bulk carrier segment for ultramax vessels and MR-hadysize tankers. "Orders for bulk carriers and tankers held 49% and 15% share respectively of this week s ordering activity and special projects follow with 13% share. At similar week in 2012, 14 fresh orders had been reported with subdued business in all vessel segments (5 bulkers, 3 tankers, 1 gas tanker, 3 reefers, 1 passenger/cruise and 1 Ro-Ro. Compared with previous week s levels, a large increase of 100% is recorded in the volume of new orders for special projects (10 new orders from 5 last week) and 65% in the bulk carrier (38 new orders from 23 last week). In the tanker segment, there is a 40% weekly decline with 12 new orders from 20 last week. In terms of invested capital, the offshore segment grasped 33% of the total amount of money invested due to the construction of high valued jack up drilling rigs-more than $1,1bn invested for special projects and the bulk carrier segment held 30% share with an invested capital of more than $992,5mil.", Golden Destiny noted. In a similar report, Clarkson Hellas noted that it was "an active week in the dry newbuilding market; starting with the larger sizes Berge Bulk have declared options for the third and fourth in a series of 250,000 DWT VLOCs at Guangzhou Longxue, with delivery of both vessels in A significant volume of ordering coming to light from Scorpio Bulkers with an order for six firm plus four option 82,000 DWT Kamsarmax at Hudong and declaring a further four options for 64,000 DWT Ultramax at Chengxi. 5 See also : Vlampijp Sponsoractie s.s. 7 in the world, and the ocean trials verify the ability to unlock ocean currents as a renewable energy source. This is a break-through for the entire renewable energy industry, said Minesto s CEO Anders Jansson. The breakthrough ocean trials with a 1:4 scale Deep Green power plant in Strangford Lough proves power production from slow currents using a surface-mounted installation, a concept that is directly transferable to full commercial installations in ocean currents. To date no one else has proven a viable case for ocean current power that has been verified through offshore trials. Deep Green, developed by marine energy technology company Minesto, is the only known power plant that works cost-effectively in low velocity tidal and ocean currents. Our technology is indeed different from other marine power plants. It has been a long fight to get to the point where we are but when you have what we have, it is worth it, said Anders Jansson, CEO, Minesto. This is a break-through for the entire renewable energy industry. We will produce renewable electricity with high reliability to a cost that will compete, or even be lower, than conventional energy sources. Ocean currents are a hidden treasure of renewable energy The sea trial in Northern Ireland measures long time performance of Deep Green for valuable insights for the first full scale installation of Deep Green, planned for 2015 and also possibly somewhere in the UK. The Deep Green demonstrator has a three metre long wing and is tethered to an offshore control room in Strangford Lough. A specifically equipped RIB boat enables safe and cost effective offshore operations. Ocean currents are the hidden treasure of renewable energy sources, said Anders Jansson. With their almost continuous water flows they carry large amounts of renewable energy over the globe and with a high load factor compared to weather dependant sources like wind or solar power. The resource is predictable and feasible for providing base grid power, and has minimal environmental impact. The challenge has been that the currents are too slow and the sites are too deep for most available marine power plants. Deep Green solves that problem. Minesto s technology will contribute to make countries like the USA, Japan and Taiwan carbon neutral and independent energy producers, instead of hugely dependent on fossil based and imported energy. Just to take an example: Taiwan claims that 50 per cent of their energy can be supplied from the ocean currents along the coast if they just find a viable technology, and we believe that Deep Green is that technology. Today Taiwan depends on 98 per cent imported energy which is a threat to the country s economy. ALSO INTERESTED IN THIS FREE MARITIME NEWSCLIPPINGS? PLEASE VISIT THE WEBSITE : AND REGISTER FOR FREE! Heerema s latest fleet addition the AEGIR meets the BALDER in the Gulf of Mexico Two Americans kidnapped by pirates in Nigeria released Two Americans kidnapped from a U.S.-flagged oil vessel in the south of Nigeria almost three weeks ago have been released, the State Department said Tuesday. The captain and the chief engineer of the C-Retriever were taken off the ship during an Oct. 23 attack in the Gulf of Guinea, where piracy dangers are on the rise. Last week, a crew from NBC News tracked the 222-foot oil supply ship, owned by a Louisiana firm, to the outskirts of the Port of Onne, where it sat in the water apparently abandoned. Citing privacy concerns, State Department spokesman Jen Psaki said details of the release and the names of the Americans were not being made public. "We welcome the release of the two U.S. citizens who were kidnapped from the Retriever," she said. 10 Nigerian waters to be released after a ransom is paid. Nigeria is considered the top kidnap hot spot in the world, according to security firm NYA. Analysts say anger that the country's oil wealth has not filtered down to average citizens is fueling the crime spike. "There is a lot of anger within the local communities that the rush for 'black gold' has not led to an improvement in [people's] economic conditions," Leke Oyewole, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan's special adviser on maritime services, told NBC News. Photo : Hans Steenbeek HCI Closes Series B Funding with CARU Holland Container Innovations B.V. (HCI) has closed its Series-B funding round. In addition to existing shareholders, CARU Containers B.V. (CARU) will invest an undisclosed sum in HCI. When the transaction has been completed CARU will own 5% of the outstanding shares in HCI via their investment company P.O.R.T. Holdings B.V. HCI launched the Series-B funding round shortly after completion of a key milestone earlier this year. In March 2013 HCI became the first company to successfully achieve ISO certification for a foldable 40 freight container. To date several companies have produced foldable containers but no other company in the world has achieved ISO certification. Having already passed CSC certification in 2011 the key conditions for commercialization of the product have now been met. This also explains why the funding round was oversubscribed. We are very excited about expanding the business together with CARU. Their investment is like the icing on the cake for the commercial partnership we are building. They will act as a preferred leasing partner, which means we can focus our capital and talent on further developing our technology. We believe that the only way we can change our sector is by partnering with companies that share our passion. Having an industrial player like CARU come on board confirms we are on the right track, said Simon Bosschieter the Managing Director of HCI. The HCI foldable container will be marketed and sold under the brand name 4Fold. The official product launch is scheduled for early next year. The product is currently being tested by two leading global shipping companies. HCI s long-term goal is to achieve mass deployment through strategic licensing agreements with global shipping lines and container leasing companies. The first phase of deployment will be executed in close cooperation with CARU. The initial focus will be on customers within their global customer network with specific needs and a higher savings potential. CARU will deploy the container based on a leasing fee that ensures that both CARU and the customer benefit from the cost savings. For CARU the value proposition for us and for our customers is so obvious. We see the market opportunity and want to be one of the first container companies in the world to capitalize on the growing trade imbalances and increasing cost of storage and repositioning. Folding is fast, easy and safe. The added bonus is that the 4Fold product can contribute to the reduction of CO2 and other harmful emissions. We want to be one of the most innovative players in our market and this initiative fits perfectly with where we are moving, said Rob Tromp the CEO of CARU. 11 In addition to ongoing pilot projects with global shipping companies, CARU has already ordered several units of 4Fold. These containers will be leased to an existing customer of CARU to transport goods via land and sea. When empty the container can be folded to a quarter of its original size so that 4 units can be stacked and treated as a single container. American Cases Highlight Piracy Risks in Africa Two cases this week involving American piracy victims in Africa have highlighted the maritime dangers in the region. However, maritime experts say there are significant differences in the causes and response to piracy off the coast of Somalia and incidents in the troubled Gulf of Guinea, near Nigeria. A judge in Norfolk, Virginia has ordered Somali national Ahmed Muse Salad to serve 19 consecutive life sentences for his role in the 2011 murders of four Americans. Salad was among a group of Somali pirates who boarded a yacht carrying its American owners and two crew members off Africa's east coast. The four Americans were shot and killed after negotiations with the U.S. navy broke down. In another case, the State Department said two Americans who were kidnapped by pirates off Nigeria's coast last month have been freed. Spokeswoman Jen Psaki welcomed their release, but provided few details. "For privacy reasons, we will not provide any additional information on the two individuals or the circumstances of their release," said Psaki. The International Maritime Bureau's Piracy Reporting Center reports that the overall number of piracy attacks near Somalia has dropped over the past year, largely due to increased naval patrols. There were 11 reported incidents of piracy near Somalia, including two hijackings, between January and October of this year. Around the waters of Nigeria, there were 30 reported incidents in the same period, including two hijackings. James Bridger, a maritime security consultant with Delex Systems, said that what is often referred to as piracy near Nigeria is actually an extension of criminal behavior on shore. In the Gulf of Guinea as a whole it is, at its lowest level, it is simply robbing ships at anchor, at berth. That s a really opportunistic affair. You also have kidnap for ransom both on land and at sea, explained Bridger. Bridger pointed out that many of the security measures that have been effective in curbing piracy off Somalia's coast do not exist in the Gulf of Guinea. "For one, armed guards are not allowed inside of the territorial waters of Nigeria in particular, or really any state in West Africa. You can have armed guards outside of the 12 miles, [the] 12 nautical mile territorial limit, but as soon as they go inside, their weapons have to be under lock and key. And, if they are going into Nigeria, which is the most dangerous, they can t have weapons at all," said Bridger. Bridger said one of the few options for shipping companies in the region is to "rent" Nigerian security personnel. Distribution : daily to active addresses Page 12

13 Kevin Krick, the Senior Director of Security and Environment for APL, a global transportation company that does shipping in regions including Africa, notes that the extra security measures have a financial impact. "It means we need to take additional measures to ensure that our vessels are safeguarded. So, there is a cost involved," said Krick. Krick said that his company is grateful for the naval counter-piracy measures that have been put in place to protect maritime commerce, which he says is a "life-blood" for industry. 18 ROUTE, PORTS & SERVICES Government makes Ukrainian ports more competitive The Cabinet of Ministers revised the Rules of protection of internal waters and territorial sea of Ukraine from pollution and contamination, the Information-Analytical Bulletin of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine informs. The government has decided to bring the Ukrainian Maritime Law in compliance with the International Maritime Law, cancelling the segregated ballast control (sea water intended for ballast required to preserve the strength and characteristics of sea-going vessels), and additional environmental checks of the ship. The new revision cancels the Environmental Declaration which essentially duplicates the details of the vessel passport and is contrary to the 1965 International Convention on Facilitation of International Maritime Traffic, which Ukraine joined. It clearly defines the list of documents that may be required by the State from the ship administration when a vessel calls at a port. There is no environmental declaration on this list. Also, the procedure of control over segregated ballast management is greatly simplified. And the Water Code is amended to remove inconsistencies between the Ukrainian and international law of the sea. Due to imperfections in the maritime legislation, incidents occurred in Ukrainian ports when by simply draining clean seawater constituted a violation, even though the waters of the port were not contaminated. The requirement for environmental impact assessment of segregated ballast in Ukrainian ports has nothing to do with the applicable rules of international maritime law, analysts say. According to them, clean sea water is used solely as a mass and is not involved in the processes associated with a change in its chemical composition. It is for these reasons that, according to the International Maritime Convention, segregated ballast is not subject to additional environmental control. 19 Germany: ports and shipping organisations say Kiel Canal "in need of immediate upgrading" North German ports, industry and shipping organisations have called for what they called "a sustained upgrading and operational reliability for the Kiel Canal." In the course of a press panel discussion in Hamburg hosted by Port of Hamburg Marketing, port and business representatives from centres along the Kiel Canal and the Hamburg Port Authority jointly called for the reconstruction without delay of the fifth lock chamber and the renovation of the two existing large lock chambers at Brunsbüttel. In the medium term, business in the port and industry regard the straightening out of the Eastern stretch of the canal and its deepening by one metre as indispensable measures. Chaired by Port of Hamburg Marketing CEO Axel Mattern, the panel was concerned with the demands on an effective and reliable canal infrastructure, and the economic consequences of its restricted use and accessibility. Jens Broder Knudsen, Chairman of Kiel Canal Initiative, Jens Meier, Chairman of the Executive Board of Hamburg Port Authority, Frank Schnabel, Chairman of the Federation of Schleswig-Holstein Ports, and Rainer Keiemburg, Managing Director of TOTAL Bitumen Deutschland, participated. For Mr Broder Knudsen, it is clear that for handling their growing flows of goods, not just ports on the canal, but others in Northern Germany and our neighbouring countries, depend on having a functioning Kiel Canal that is navigable free of obstacles. Mr Knudsen pointed out that with the assent of all 16 federal states of Germany, the Bodewig Commission had worked out some innovative possibilities for financing infrastructure. By way of special funding and pilot projects, with a broad political consensus a basis had been secured for long-term refinancing of infrastructure funding as a matter of priority. In Mr Knudsen s view, this will radically simplify the implementation of future infrastructure measures. The present debate about a car toll on foreigners should not be allowed to further prevent the politically desired topping up of additional funds in the budget," he said. "The Kiel Canal is the lifeline that connects German ports on the North Sea with the Baltic. The funding from the special fund to be created for the essential and overdue upgrading works on the Kiel Canal should serve to secure this advantage in routing vis-à-vis the competing ports in the Netherlands and Belgium, declared Mr Knudsen. Despite several gaps and restrictions in operation of the canal, in the first half of 2013 a total of 15,940 vessels transited the Kiel Canal, transporting 48.8 million tons of cargo. For Frank Schnabel, the accessibility of the ports lying directly on the Kiel Canal in Brunsbüttel, Hochdonn, Hohenhörn, Kreishafen Rendsburg plus Rendsburg Port, the recently built heavy cargo port, Kiel s Nordhafen and the Kiel-Holtenau inland waterway port, must be guaranteed in the long term. If the reliability of the canal, actually the most heavily used canal in the world, cannot be guaranteed due to infrastructural deficiencies, then that will rapidly lead to a switching of transport flows. That will then affect innumerable jobs directly or indirectly attributable to the canal and the sea trades using it, said Mr Frank Schnabel, for whom the Kiel Canal is more than just a transit waterway. The Kiel Canal is just as much a lifeline for industrial firms and businesses along the canal. Hamburg and Schleswig- Holstein are so tightly networked that negative consequences for Hamburg s port also hit Schleswig-Holstein and its maritime economy directly. We must at all costs prevent the catastrophe of a long-term closure of the Kiel Canal, since otherwise the national economy will suffer grave damage, warned Mr Schnabel. Mr Keiemburg drew attention to the uninterrupted supply and transports of products for industry based on the canal and in the region: For production facilities such as TOTAL Bitumen, Bayer or the Heide Refinery, any restrictions on operations or closures of the canal entail losses running into millions," he explained. "Delays or cessations of production cause extra costs and enormous expense for such firms. And these can also very rapidly lead to supply bottlenecks for our customers. For a company like TOTAL Bitumen Deutschland, which can point to a century of success and with its products is also closely linked to infrastructural development, in Keiemburg s view a functioning Distribution : daily to active addresses Page 19

20 Kiel Canal is also a decisive factor in determining whether Brunsbüttel s development as an industrial base reaches a dead-end or remains on a growth course. After the replacement investments in the locks and the Levensauer elevated bridge, in the view of the Kiel Canal Initiative the growing sizes and drafts of ships require adjustment of the Eastern stretch of the canal very soon. This would allow greater feasible draft and hence higher transport capacity. Along with the adaptation and optimization of the canal bends on the Eastern stretch, a deepening by one additional metre to a total of 12 metres is also vital. These measures would shorten passage times for shipping, eliminating waiting times. It is also of crucial importance that the canal control centres should be adequately staffed with engineers and technicians. Without additional staff, the essential complete upgrading of the Kiel Canal will not be assured, Mr Knudsen said. Mr Meier said the Kiel Canal represents "a crucial geographical advantage" for the Port of Hamburg and other German ports on North Sea. From Hamburg to Gdansk, for example the route advantage using the Kiel Canal is 437 nautical miles, compared to the route around Denmark that via Skagen totals 874 nautical miles. With more than 130 feedership departures per week, around 2 million TEU per year are transported by feeder through the canal in an ecologically friendly manner between Hamburg and the Baltic region. The economic significance of the Kiel Canal therefore extends far beyond North Germany. The upgrading, enlargement and regular maintenance of the Kiel Canal is an urgent necessity, Mr Meier emphasized. Port of Hamburg Marketing CEO Axel Mattern wound up the panel discussion by commenting that as the shortest, fastest and most environmentally friendly sea link with the Baltic region, the Kiel Canal is of immense importance for the wider Hamburg metropolitan region. In combination with the Elbe and the Port of Hamburg, the Kiel Canal is a traffic system. The preservation and upgrading of the canal as part of Germany s transport infrastructure is a national obligation and utterly essential for the preservation of the competitiveness of our economy and our ports. After the neglect of infrastructure over recent decades, we expect absolutely clear signals from the incoming new federal government indicating an assured future for the Kiel Canal and the related trade industry and ports, Mr Mattern concluded.
