Course Description NB: Course outcomes are linked to SLIS program course competencies, where applicable (see next section, Course Goals and Student Learning Objectives ) A joint venture of the School of Library and Information Science and the Department of World Languages and Literatures, this beginning course provides a foundation in Chinese language and its cultures that will enhance the students professional preparation as well as their interpersonal skills. The first objective of the course is to prepare the students to interact with Chinese-speaking patrons from various countries and communities, and, for this purpose, the course content and activities will emphasize social and cultural aspects of communication. Secondly, by taking this course, the students will increase their proficiency in the use of information and communication technologies by being able to find information and resources in Chinese. Throughout the course, emphasis will be placed on receptive skills (listening and reading) and on Chinese cultures. Chinese 132, Fall 2012 Page 1 of 7

3 Specialized online glossary materials will be provided for the class. Suggested online dictionary: Learning Management System & Class Session Program D2L: for course documentation content, online exams, Calendar, and other documents. Collaborate will be used for online class meetings, office hours, and instructor tutorial recordings. Audacity and its Lame MP3 Encoder programs are recommended for audio recordings for oral assignments. Classroom Protocol Students are expected to attend at least eight online class meetings. When a student misses a session, s/he needs to watch the recorded session and submit the assigned extra homework to the designated dropbox on D2L. Because the classes will be online, use headsets in order to reduce noise, and place yourselves on mute mode when you are not speaking. Also, try not to disrupt the class with individual technical problems during the class sessions. Entering the session 15 minutes early to test your audio is recommended. Dropping and Adding Students are responsible for understanding the policies and procedures about add/drops, academic renewal, etc. Information on add/drops are available at Information about late drop is available at Students should be aware of the current deadlines and penalties for adding and dropping classes. Assignments and Grading Policy There will be two class meetings per week up to a total of 90 minutes, and attendance via Collaborate is strongly recommended. Throughout the semester, students are required to attend at least eight synchronous sessions. (If for some reason a student cannot attend at least eight synchronous sessions, please talk to the instructor at the beginning of the semester.) Students are expected to view recordings of all unattended sessions and submit homework for each. Each regular class will be recorded and a link to the recording will be posted on the class website (D2L). Students must view (or review) the recordings of any unattended session and finish the assigned homework. Class sessions will include language structure (grammar) lectures, new textbook and library/specific-purpose vocabulary introduction, some group oral or written exercises, as well as brief cultural lectures, videos, or presentations. Besides the twice-weekly, Collaborate classes and the lecture/tutorial recordings, there will be approximately three hours of homework per week. Homework assignments, which will be posted in D2L, will be mostly exercises from the required textbooks. Chinese 132, Fall 2012 Page 3 of 7

4 There will be unit quizzes and a cumulative final exam. For oral or spoken assessment, students will either meet with the instructor online or submit a brief recording (with the use of the program Audacity). If the student requires more oral practice, he or she can set up an appointment for a virtual office-hour meeting via Collaborate. For other office hours/consultation needs, students can contact the instructor via or set up an appointment to meet in the Online Room via the D2L site. For class evaluation purposes, all students will take a written, online assessment test, at the beginning and at the end of the semester to assess how much was learned in class. The placement exam is a tool for the students as well as the instructor to assess progress in language proficiency. The results will not be counted toward the final grade. The students should ask their program advisor if it is appropriate to put these results in their portfolios. Course assignments will be as follows: Participation 15% Students are required to attend at least eight synchronous meetings via Collaborate. If for some reasons, students cannot do so, please talk to the instructor at the beginning of the semester. When a student misses a session, s/he needs to watch the recorded session and submit the assigned extra homework to the designated dropbox on D2L. Homework 15% Quiz 5% Unit Quizzes 45% Written Final Exam 20% University Policies Academic integrity Students should know that the University s Academic Integrity Policy is availabe at Your own commitment to learning, as evidenced by your enrollment at San Jose State University and the University s integrity policy, require you to be honest in all your academic course work. Faculty members are required to report all infractions to the office of Student Conduct and Ethical Development. For this class, all assignments are to be completed by the individual student unless otherwise specified. If you would like to include in your assignment any material you have submitted, or plan to submit for another class, please note that SJSU s Academic Policy F06-1 requires approval of instructors.
