TEACHING Teaching Philosophy: It is my belief that students and instructors share the responsibility of creating a reciprocal learning environment where all contribute resources including experiences, information, and motivation. As such, knowledge is realized both through the study of proven practices and published concepts and through critical dialogue with one another. It behooves us to understand those with extensive knowledge resulting from their research and practice, yet it is equally important to engage one another and those from various disciplines, reflecting on ideas and experiences that may support or contradict these findings. In such an environment, we may thoroughly engage knowledge sources, growing as professionals, and learning to live a fuller human experience, thereby offering the best of ourselves as counselors to our clients, schools, and communities.

Garrett, Ph.D. RESEARCH & PUBLICATIONS Research Interests: Building on clinical and personal experiences, my research focus is twofold: 1) understanding the personal and contextual factors that contribute to substance abuse and those which may impede treatment, especially among socially marginalized populations; and 2) promoting quality counselor education, with a specific emphasis on online and doctoral studies. Theoretically, I have adopted an Emancipatory Communitarianism approach (Prilleltensky, 1997) which supports greater critical consciousness, mutual responsibility, and a strengthsbased orientation while serving individuals and whole communities. With this perspective, my research agenda has been to help communities realize their full potential as they address the social injustices that are perpetuated within.
