Graduate Programs in Counseling Darden College of Education
Welcome to Old Dominion University s Counseling program in the Department of Counseling and Human Services! The Counseling program offers specializations meeting the highest standards, accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Programs (CACREP), and offers opportunities for students to develop professional counseling, research, and leadership skills. As evidence of its attention to quality education, the program was recognized nationally as the Outstanding Counselor Educator program in 2009 by the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. ODU s counseling program maintains a low faculty to student ratio and currently graduates approximately 40 master s and educational specialist students and 14 doctoral students per year. Students of racial/ethnic and gender diversity are particularly encouraged to apply. We feature 10 full-time faculty members, several of whom are well-known leaders in the counseling profession. The program faculty are particularly committed to educating students who are dedicated to reducing disparities in society based on race, gender, class, sexual orientation, and other social group memberships. Our Faculty include: Dr. Nina Brown, Professor and Eminent Scholar Dr. Tim Grothaus, Assistant Professor Dr. Danica Hays, Associate Professor Dr. Radha Horton-Parker, Associate Professor Dr. Garrett McAuliffe, Professor Dr. Ed Neukrug, Professor Dr. Ted Remley, Professor and Batten Endowed Chair Dr. Alan Woody Schwitzer, Professor Dr. Suzan Thompson, Clinical Coordinator Dr. Christine Ward, Assistant Professor Degree Programs Master s Degree (M.S.Ed.) Programs The master s program in Counseling requires 48 to 60 credits, a 100-hour practicum, a 600 hour internship, and a comprehensive examination. The master s degree can be earned in two years of full-time study or
three years of part-time study. We do not offer on-line classes and students must attend class at the main campus of Old Dominion University located in Norfolk, VA. ODU does offer a distance learning master s degree program in counseling at the New College Institute in Martinsville, Virginia. For details on this program, please contact us. At the Norfolk campus of ODU, students select one of four nationally-accredited specializations: College Counseling (48 credits) Community Counseling (48 credits) Mental Health Counseling (60 credits) School Counseling (48 credits) Beginning in the fall semester of 2011, all master s degree programs will require 60 credits. All master s degree students complete a core curriculum that prepares counselors for professional practice in all settings. The core coursework in the master s program covers a range of counseling and human development issues including approaches to individual and group counseling; ethical and professional issues in counseling; fundamentals of the counseling profession; measurement and evaluation in counseling; lifespan and career development; research in counseling; and social and cultural issues. Preparation for specialized practice in counseling includes two to four unique courses important for particular specializations and a 600 hour internship in a setting appropriate for the specialization chosen. Students are encouraged to take courses to prepare them to be license-eligible in their respective specializations. The four counseling master s degree specialization programs are accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Programs (CACREP). The school counselor licensure program is also approved by the Department of Education of the Commonwealth of Virginia. For detailed information about our master s degree programs in counseling, please visit education.odu.edu.

students are expected to be involved in the research projects of faculty members, assist in teaching courses, provide group and individual supervision to master s students, attend and present at professional conferences, and generally immerse themselves in professional activities at Old Dominion University. Cutting Edge Research and Training Opportunities ODU-NCSB Olney Road Counseling Center The ODU Counseling program has partnered with the Norfolk Community Services Board to provide university Mental Health track practicum students with a comprehensive practicum and internship experience. The walkin clinic serves Norfolk residents with mental health or substance abuse issues. The clientele includes a variety of ages, giving students the chance to see children, families, adolescents, and adults. GEAR UP Project Dr. Christine A. Ward is the program evaluator for the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) project in Newport News Public Schools. The GEAR UP program is designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. Dr. Ward s involvement with the project includes evaluating and researching GEAR UP program objectives and consulting with program staff regarding evidence-based practices designed to raise expectations and increase college attendance and success rates among GEAR UP students. Graduate counseling students participate in all aspects of this project. International Counseling Institutes Students have the rare opportunity to study abroad during their degree programs and earn academic credits that count toward their degrees. These institutes offer a rich multicultural experience in Italy and Ireland. Institutes are led by ODU counseling faculty. Counseling students travel with ODU faculty members to Italy and Ireland for 10-day to two-week stays where they learn from counselors in those countries and experience the counseling profession in a cultural context much different from their own.
Workshops by Nationally Known Speakers The counseling scholarly honorary, Chi Sigma Iota, hosts a series of eight workshops each year that brings nationally known counseling scholars to campus to share the latest cutting edge research, information, and techniques with counseling students and community practitioners. Since the mascot for the City of Norfolk is a mermaid, the workshop series is known as The Big Splash. Individuals who have presented in the past include Dr. Jane Myers, Dr. Tom Sweeney, Dr. David Capuzzi, Dr. Don C. Locke, Dr. Sam Gladding, Dr. Courtland Lee, Dr. Judy Miranti, and Dr. Mark Young. Healthy Relationships Project Dr. Danica G. Hays began this research-service initiative in 2007, and over 25 counseling students have been a part of its mission. The project involves educating adolescents and young adults on healthy relationships; providing early intervention for dating violence through screening and workshops; and making available training to mental health and school professionals. The project has been featured nationally in Counseling Today, a publication of the American Counseling Association.
Quality School Counseling Initiative Initiated in the fall of 2007, the Quality School Counseling Initiative is an innovative collaboration between a local urban school district s high school counselors and their school counseling leadership team along with Drs. Tim Grothaus, Christine Ward, and Laurie Craigen from ODU, two faculty members from Norfolk State University (Drs. Sylinda Banks and Norma Brummage) and the integral involvement of several ODU doctoral and masters students. The primary goal is for the collaborative leadership teams to engage in a new way of envisioning and implementing their school counseling programs in order to promote enhanced success for all students in their schools. Cultural De-Centering Project Since 1993, Dr. Garrett McAuliffe has led a series of investigations on the connection between counselors relativistic thinking and a number of effective counselor qualities. He has included graduate students as team members in all of these studies. In each case, students have participated in research design, literature review, data analysis, and conference presentations. The current Cultural De-Centering research project is analyzing students relationships to their cultures of origin in terms of attitudes toward sexual orientation, religion, gender, and social class.
Supervision Training for Hampton Roads School Counselors Beginning in Fall 2010, a joint venture is being planned between ODU faculty and doctoral students and a local school district. ODU faculty and doctoral students are designing a model of group counseling supervision for school counseling practitioners. The groups will be led by ODU doctoral students and supervised by Drs. Tim Grothaus and Christine Ward. ODU faculty and doctoral student team members are also developing the research methodology and measurement rubrics for the project.
