Top Events for Librarians at the Tucson Festival of Books How to Take Part in the Open ebooks Initiative Online Resources for Women's History Month Using State Docs Online to Help with School Assignments In-person and online Continuing Education opportunities New Reads, Special Events, and STEM Programming at the Tucson Festival of Books With over 350 authors, 100,000 attendees, and hundreds of programs to attend, the Tucson Festival of Books on March 12 and 13 is the largest literary celebration in the state. But the fun's not just for book lovers--the festival is chock full of events you can use to help your customers. Start off with Libraries and Public Access to Books: The Lawrence Clark Powell Lecture, where experts from around the country and from the University of Arizona's School of Information will discuss how libraries shape public conversations. Then visit the Children's Area to see the newest recommended reads, from read aloud books to YA picks. Stop by Science City to get a slew of hands on STEM programming ideas for kids and teens, and finish your visit off by checking out the State Library at booth 165, where we will announce the 2016 ONEBOOKAZ winners. 2 Last month, IMLS announced the launch of Open Ebooks, a new initiative and e-reader app that will make thousands of popular, top-selling ebooks available to children in need for free. If your library serves a population where a minimum of 70% of children come from low-income families, your library can register with First Book to distribute the Open ebooks app. For libraries that do not have access to data to verify the income status of their customers, partnerships with organizations who regularly collect this data about their participants can be a helpful way to provide this service. Library programs that partner with Title I schools, Head Start programs, food pantries, or other organizations can use their partner's data to register, and then distribute Open ebooks resources through this program. Online Resources for Women s History Month in Arizona At the end of the nineteenth century, women in Arizona began their fight for suffrage: the right to vote. On November 5, 1912, Arizona s men voted in favor of equal suffrage, opening the door for women to vote and hold public office in Arizona. Women did not earn universal suffrage in the United States until the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in Learn about the Arizona women who helped pave the way for women s suffrage and their right to hold public office in Arizona, with resources on DAZL, the Digital Arizona Library Collection. 3 State Docs online The State Library's online collection of State Documents offers a wealth of information for students who require research for homework assignments. From primary historical documents to up-to-date statistics, the Arizona Memory Project provides unique facts students can't find anywhere else. But with so many collections available online, sometimes it's hard to know where to get started. If searching by collection or keyword isn't finding what students are looking for, try using the State Library's list of agency codes. Simply use the advanced search feature in AMP to search by "source" instead of the "title", and enter the agency code. This will allow you to search across all our online State Documents by the agency that published the documents. Check out the Department of Liquor's reports for a policy paper on underage drinking, or look up the Department of Environmental Quality for a report on the environment.
