As of September 30, 2014, the NE Regional STEM Hub Year-to-date expenditures is approximately $58, Beneke noted invoices will be coming in from the service providers now that training is complete. Five-out-of-ten contracts were amended since the last Board meeting due to the change with First Tech Challenge (FTC). Beneke noted he will be transferring $3500 in 1 P age

2 funds to the Cedar Valley STEM festival. The transfer will still keep the Northeast region in line with the festival policy. Update on Scale-up Awards and Training Although two orgnaizations withdrew their FTC award, the Northeast region was able to fund one A World in Motion and one Engineering is Elementary award. Professional Development (PD) training in the Northeast has been completed. First Tech Challenge Cedar Falls PLTW Principals of Engineering Iowa City PLTW Gateway to Technology Ames Engineering is Elementary Cedar Falls Pint Size Science (4) Calmar, Dubuque (2), and Cedar Falls A World in Motion (3) Cedar Falls KidWind (4) Elkader (2) and Dubuque (2) Hyperstream was in Mason City, Ames, and Iowa City Defined STEM was held online CASE will occur in June in Ankeny May hold one more Pint Size Science training in Dubuque. Festival Updates The Cedar Valley Family STEM Festival is Thursday, November 13 from 4:00 PM to 7:30 PM at the Five Sullivans Convention Center in Waterloo. The Northeast STEM Hub has partnered with Waterloo Community Schools and Cedar Falls Community School District. The Northeast Hub will be utilizing the electronic registration form and an express pass to track participation at the event. Tama County Festival will be March 22 from 1-4 PM at South Tama Elementary School in Traer Dubuque STEM Festival will be April 18 from 10-2 at Clark College in Dubuque Northeast STEM Festival will be April 30 from 4-7:30 at NICC in Calmar STEM Education Award for Inspired Teaching Nominations are open for the STEM Education Award for Inspired Teaching sponsored by Kemin Industries. This award will celebrate educators whose leadership and dedication to STEM in Iowa increases students' interest and awareness in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. One teacher from each of Iowa's six STEM regions will receive a $1,500 award along with an additional $1,500 to be used in their classroom. Anyone can submit a nomination from October 22 to December 12, After a teacher is nominated, they will be asked to fill out an application. They will have until January 9 to send in their completed form. The applications will then be sent to a panel of judges who will select the six winners. They will be announced at the Statewide STEM Conference in March Scott Fortune and Mark Wagner from the NE Advisory Board have volunteered to serve on the review committee for the Northeast region. Marcy Seavey, UNI STEM Coordinator, will also serve on the review committee. Centers for Advanced Professional Studies Program (CAPS) Update October 15 was the deadline to apply for the Centers for Advanced Professional Studies Program (CAPS) RFP. The objective of CAPS is to immerse students in professional environments without the need for new buildings or classrooms. Eligible applicants include all private and public school districts and buildings serving students 2 Page

3 in any of grades 9 through 12. The Council had 6 applicants representing 14 school districts. Review committee is currently visiting each applicant. Below are the applicants; Bettendorf- Pleasant Valley CSDs Cedar Rapids- College Community CSDs Kirkwood CC regional center Northeast High School Goose Lake Rock Valley CSD Washington CSD Volunteer Service Working Group Beneke is chairing the STEM Volunteer Service Working Group for the Governor s STEM Advisory Council. The group is charged with identifing opportunities to support and expand STEM in Iowa through volunteering and national service. Focus areas may include: STEM Mentoring STEM Volunteer Promotion/Recruitment STEM National Service programming (ie: AmeriCorps, etc.) STEM Employer Volunteer Engagement Existent opportunities: Volunteer Iowa; Million Women Mentors (MWM); Volunteer Center; Mentoring Program from the Iowa Mentoring Partnership; ISU Extension 4H; Girl Scouts; etc. Deliverables include a set of recommendations for the Council to engage more Iowa STEM advocates in volunteering. In particular with MWM, the working group may focus on: (a) Ways to assist MWM with its mentor/mentee matching efforts (Perhaps a role for regional STEM managers) (b) Ways for MWM-Iowa to identify and secure sources of mentors (men and women) interested in mentoring young women ages to help MWM-Iowa reach its goal of at least 5,000 mentors throughout the state by 2018 (c) Ways to identify STEM related resources and opportunities within Iowa (e.g. seminars, educational functions, events, etc. that can be provided to mentors/mentees) (d) Design tips for a resource page for mentors on topics they should cover with mentees specific to the STEM field in Iowa The group met for the first time, via conference call, on October 23 and plan to have another conference call in the next few weeks Scale-Up Timeline The Governor s STEM Advisory Council recommended keeping the current ten providers for a second year and open up a small RFP cycle to bring in up to five additional programs to appear on the educator menu in spring of The Council, depending on responses to the RFP, may target areas of emphasis to be favored, such as computer science, mathematics, life science, career awareness, interdisciplinarity, etc. Below is the proposed timeline for STEM Scale-Up selection; November, 3, 2014 Proposal open for selection of Service Provider November 10 and 11 - Evaluator training November 17, 2014 Scale-Up STEM Proposal Webinar for Service Providers December 12, 2014 Deadline for STEM Scale-Up Proposals 3 P age

4 December 15, 2014 Review process begins December 22, 2014 Inter-rater Reliability Session (for reviewers) January 5-9, 2015 Reviewer calibration January 13, 2015 Selected Scale-Up programs are notified. January 14-16, 2015 Manager conversations with Service Providers January 19- March 2, applications from Educators for STEM programming are recruited and received by the six STEM regions March 2, 2015 Deadline for Scale-Up Educator Applications March 3-6, 2015 Manager conversations with Service Providers and Educators March 9-20, 2015 Scale-Up Awardees selection March 23, 2015 Scale-Up Awardees announced March 23, 2015 Subaward agreements between Service Providers and Hub institutions begins May 30, 2015 (pending legislation) Scale-Up STEM programming awards are announced to the public Scott Greenhalgh, from the NE Advisory Board, has volunteered to serve on the service provider selection committee. The application process will open one month earlier (January 19 versus February 24) and close two months earlier (March 2 versus May 2). March 9-20 members from the Advisory board will be reviewing and selecting applicants to receive scale-up awards. Anyone interested in serving on the review committee needs to contact Beneke. Future Meeting Dates and Locations Our next Advisory Board meeting will be conducted via conference call on Thursday, December 11, from 4:30 to 6:00 PM. Based on the Scale-Up selection timeline, Beneke requested to move the February 26 meeting to January 29 and move the April 7 meeting up to March 19. The changes are reflected below. Sessions will occur online between March 3- May 5 and then on the UNI campus from July Cooper mentioned Dubuque Hempsted and Senior are starting Advanced Manufacturing programs. Beneke mentioned Hour of Code will be awarding one school in Iowa $10,000 to implement Code.org. Google has provided a $20,000 gift which will provide $4,000 for a school in each of the remaining Hub regions. Beneke also noted the NE Region has started to distribute the regional newsletter monthly rather than bimonthly. 4 P age
