3 A meeting of State Insurance Officers (SIO) took place in Brisbane on Saturday 28 th July Greg Daly attended as Tasmanian SIO. Some issues included the need to better promote insurance schemes to members, incentives to clubs to insure and insurance coverage for volunteers on working bees (see below). The New South Wales SIO wanted to change the insurance renewal date to the end of financial year (30 th June), but this was voted down. Greg will send out a copy of the meeting report. Working Bee Insurance Greg said that if any club needed to organise an insurance certificate to cover volunteers on working bees to contact him at least a week ahead of the event. NATIONAL COUNCIL ISSUES Canning Stock Route permit system is now working well. The next National Council meeting will be in Hobart on 20 th October 2007 at The Woolstore in Macquarie Street. RECREATIONAL VEHICLE WORKING GROUP Pat Murray said that the last meeting of the RV Working Group was well attended, in contrast to the prior meeting when only 4WD Tasmania and the Parks and Wildlife Services (PWS) were present. The last meeting was also attended by an officer of Standards Australia, who presented a draft standard for 4WD trips. Most of the draft standard was simple common sense, but it does emphasise the need for adequate insurance. 4WD circuit for Southern Tasmania Pat also advised that at a meeting with Forestry Tasmania (FT) at Geeveston it was indicated that FT would be receptive to the idea of developing a circuit of 4WD tracks in the Southern Forests, with 4WD Tasmania having input in both development and on-going maintenance. This is potentially a major breakthrough, because if successful it will set a precedent not only in Tasmania but possibly nation-wide. At the present time maps are being examined to work out a route that will provide a mix of 4WD tracks catering to all levels of 4WD skill from beginner to hard core. Southport Lagoon On 19 th July 2007, Barney Campbell met with Rob Ross of PWS at Southport for a familiarisation visit to the new 4WD track and camping facilities. The new track is about 5.5km long from the South Cape Road to the newly constructed campground on the north-west shore of Southport Lagoon. The track mostly follows high ground and
4 would be easily traversable by standard 4WD vehicles. The campground consists of 10 campsites, a day use area, a boat launching point, 2 toilet blocks and an emergency assembly point. There is also a helipad located adjacent to the new track some distance from the campground. Campground restrictions include: no dogs, no chainsaws to be used or carried (BYO firewood from outside Conservation Area or use fuel stoves), no driving off formed tracks, no vehicles on foreshore, fully registered vehicles only, no ATVs, maximum continuous stay is one week. It is recommended by PWS that no towed boats be brought in, preference is for dinghies that can be car topped, also recommend that caravans be off-road pop-top type. Restrictions will be enforced jointly by PWS and Tasmania Police who will be visiting the site regularly. In summary the new site is what we expected, and will appeal to different user groups than those who used the now closed tracks to Southport Lagoon and Black Swan Lagoon. It does not replace what was taken away. DRIVER TRAINING Our application for re-instatement as a Registered Training Organisation will be lodged in the near future GENERAL BUSINESS Derby Jeep Track Peter Maxwell said that an excavator has been used along the Derby Jeep Track recently, not sure what for. Greg suggested that Peter contact Rodney Clark who may be able to find out. Magnet Mine Track Peter Maxwell advised that this track is now becoming extremely overgrown. Lake Ina Pat Murray advised that Gunns Limited have gated the Lake Ina track, although it is a recognised 4WD track. They should not be able to do it, but it appears they do not have to be accountable when they close tracks. Ansons Bay John Scheibl said that the track between Ansons Bay and Eddystone Point is very wet at present, with a vehicle being drowned last weekend. Intending users of the track should take particular note of the warning in Chris Boden s book about the hazards of this track after rain periods.
5 Granite Creek Crossing - Climies Track Kevin Reeve said efforts are continuing to get the creek crossing reinstated, we need to keep the pressure on. Potential New Club Greg Daly said he had an approach from a man named Justin Stevens about forming a new club in Northern Tasmania. Greg said he had suggested to Justin that he and his friends could join an existing northern club but they want to form their own. Greg has given Justin the details about what he needs to do to get affiliated. Meeting closed 9.51pm Next meeting Monday 1 st October 2007, Campbell Town 8.00pm
