Calypso Technology A leader application to build up eticketing systems for modern and smart urban transport systems of the future Ing. Nicolas Generali SNCF 7cke7ng expert Calypso Networks Associa7on (CNA) Belgium Bologna,
Who we are CALYPSO NETWORKS ASSOCIATION is not a supplier Established in Brussels as a non for profit association by the stakeholders of a European research program, Founded by public transport business, open to other businesses and to suppliers as full members: All operators or operator associa7ons including organising authori7es, using calypso technology as associate partners :Industrial licensees, distributors, consultants, and other operators & organising authori7es F Main ObjecBve is to maintain a set of open specificabons addressing transit business needs in the context of developing contactless systems.
What is Calypso? Calypso isn t an AFC system, but a set of specifica7ons for the card/ terminal transac7on, providing: A high security level for all contactless transac7ons - High Security Level for revenue protection - Trust in multi-application contexts A large range of compliant products from various industrialists - to avoid supplier monopoly thanks to an open compe77on - to assure durability of investment (mul7 sourcing) The basis for the technical interoperability - between Transporta7on networks - between various services providers Possibility for each T.O to build his own system - Suitable for all PT environment: Scalable, flexible, intermodal A real mulb- applicabon management: - Park, access control, e- purse, city card, tourism, stadium etc
3 Calypso s pillars 1) Contactless technology + exchange security protocols ISO A&B + Session / Ratification protocol+ keys diversified Ease access Protect rights 2) Smart card µprocessor only able to secure off-line Fraud-proof +secured transaction (cryptography up to 3DES + Hash ISO ) Protect rights Customise Adapt offer seamless Travel New Services 3) Tools for a generic transaction Compliant products Common rules, commands, files data structure seamless Travel compliance with ISO Providing a range of numerous compliant cards & terminals
AFC system (4) Clearing (3) Central system (2) Concentrators (1) Terminals Issuing sales & reloading Validation Calypso = Multi-application Interoperability Customer area Intermodality

Calypso Implementa7ons
From na7ve card centric to S- W applica7on centric 1) Calypso decided to take the Java Card way - Java Card : A powerful tool from the Java concept running environment based on a virtual machine - API GlobalPlatform GP TM (Application Programming Interface) - Indispensable for the concept - the most disseminate as possible 2) Calypso: an easy Java Card/ GP approach Thanks to the Calypso specifications respecting the standards (ISO 7816 in particular) Calypso generic Applet fully GP compliant & ready to run on Java cards
The Common platorm Transport Calypso app Bank EMV ECPS app Owner applicabon Java card TM + Global PlaSorm: City services Several Security Domains Identical interface to download various applications (GP) Dynamic application management Actors & scenarii administration Large dissemination (2 billions devices) The target : the Platform implemented in a lot of usual devices of clients
The Calypso Applet CNA has the full property of a Reference Calypso Applet CNA delivers its applet free of charge and in a non discriminatory manner to any PTO /TSM CNA taking in charge its distribu7on, maintenance and management. CNA applet fully compliant GP Delivered under several different compila7ons compliant with the different extant versions of Java Card and GP Downloaded, installed and instan7ated under the different versions of Java Card / GP specifica7ons. CNA applet compliant with Calypso rev 3.1 pre- personalisa7on, and personalisa7on under the exis7ng Calypso protocols are the same as with na7ve cards
The Triangle 2 applica7on : a new way to interoperability Concept: TRIANGLE 2 is an applica7on specifically devoted to interoperability that allows the customer to load contracts on his media from all the networks that decided to accept this applica7on. Principles: A minimal applica7on data set, based on Calypso 3.1 specifica7ons, necessary to a good interoperable management but allowing to use local encoding for contracts and valida7ons The use of a specific set of keys, shared by Triangle 2 media issuers and product owners, coupled with original security mechanisms that protect local data Deployments started: France (ABC project) Belgium (MOBIB Calypso based applica7on unique for the whole country) Portugal (Porto Lisbon link)
Smart 7cke7ng today in France: Calypso based and Regional interoperability
The French ABC project : An example of Calypso Applet + Triangle 2 on NFC phones: The French Ministry launched a project based on the Calypso Applet and Triangle 2 in order to propose a na7onal common smart 7cke7ng applica7on for NFC mobile phones and smart cards This project includes 15 ci7es in France that are helped by the government to deploy NFC based 7cke7ng systems with a global scheme: A local applica7on (based on Calypso applet) specific to each city for local customers with all the local tarifica7on. The common applica7on (a triangle 2 applica7on based on Calypso applet) for occasionnal travelers (simple contracts with small value and short validity period) that will be accepted in all the NFC areas The opera7onal deployment will start in The middle- term objec7ve is to deploy this applica7on in all thefrench Public Transport networks to ensure a na7onal interoperability
