4 The end of (rural) public transporta0on as we know it? The Frankfurt RhineMain Region - an important European centre for industry, finance and services, interna=onal traffic hub is very heterogeneous and faces contradictory developments. Demographic change stable development in the regions core, but à shrinking and ageing society at the fringe à PT predominantly adapted to the needs of pupil, already service gaps Budget restric=ons The region has quickly overcome the financial and economic crisis, but: à public households s=ll suffer from the massive spending of tax money to spoil the economy à public authori=es face a strict dept brake becoming effec=ve in 2020 è è less, older, poorer but more demanding passengers circumstances form a major thread to the status- quo of rural public transport ivm GmbH (4) Broking Mobility

5 Evolu0on, not revolu0on: Making a new approach in the Odenwald county Together with the OREG, the local transport authority in the Odenwald county, we work exemplarily at developing and implemen=ng a more sustainable mobility system exceeding the current boarders of classic public transport services. Aims and objec=ves: à crea=ng a pool of available mobility op=ons à extended service (service =me and area) à be^er availability and flexibility of service à accessibility, design for all à sustainability è OREG should be recognised as the mobility broker, a one- stop- shop for organising mobility without using a private car! 12 What s next? par=cipa=on: most relevant stakeholders including poli=cs are convinced by the need to adapt the current public mobility system to future requirements draging a roadmap for implementa=on we s=ll need a deeper understanding of legal, organisa=onal and financial aspects à approach requires significant investment during the start phase à star=ng with workshop in June/July 2011 draging the requirement specifica=on of the whole system, technical issues How far so we need to/should we go? à adaptable system architecture needed no fixed schedule for implementa=on (yet) à aiming in a sound and permanent realisa=on despite its pilot character à expect to start first phase of opera=on in mid 2012 à maybe at next ECOMM in Frankfurt... ivm GmbH (12) Broking Mobility
