2 Contactless interoperability in Transit industry To ensure interoperability between contactless readers and objects, different industry segments have defined implementation specifications and proprietary test methods for contactless interface: EMVCo Book D for the payment industry NFC Forum Analog and Digital Technical specifications for NFC devices But nothing defined and matching transit expectations: A strong willingness to rely on ISO/IEC specifications and on ISO/IEC test methods A need to possibily complement those generic and cross industry standards to cope with transit specificities: Equipment with small to large antenna sizes Short transaction time for hi-throughput equipment No unique polling sequence for object detection A wish to establish an approach independent from ticketing application The possibility to accept contactless objects/readers coming from others industries : NFC phones in Card emulation mode for transit ticket emulation Contactless payment cards for paying at the gate NFC phones in reader mode for tag reading or transit card top up This had led to a standardization initative in CEN TC278 SG3 WG5 - Interoperable Fare Management systems 2

3 Introduction to the CEN TC 278 initiative Main objective: Replace contactless interoperability achieved by empiric cross testing between objects and readers By contactless interface conformance testing for objects and readers Publication of 2 Technical Specifications: Implementation requirements Test plan Media Reader Ticketing Application Validation Application Scope of work Contactless Layer ISO/IEC ISO/ IEC Contactless Layer CEN Work Item activation mid 2013 with 8 countries : Austria, Belgium, Germany, France, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, United Kingdom Work achieved in liaison with others standardization bodies ISO/IEC JTC1 SC17 WG8 (ISO/IEC & series editors) GSMA : Handset Test handbook makes already reference to the AFIMB preliminary work NFC Forum Transport Special Interest Group 3

4 Timeline and contents of the publications Edition 1: Status : Committee Draft under ballot CEN Publication forecasted : H Part 1: Implementation requirements Implementation choices among ISO/IEC14443 options Specific RF requirements for preparing the acceptance of NFC phone and smart objects No requirements preventing a compliance of transit readers or media with EMVCo Book D Part 2 : Test plan Test Plan based on ISO test methods An Edition 2 will be released afterwards : Update of Part 1 and Part 2 with a complement for NFC Forum compliant devices Ongoing gap analysis between NFC Forum Analog/digital specs and ISO/IEC & ISO standards 4

5 A phased and scalable approach To favor an immediate adoption of these new CEN standards : According to the type of contactless objects in the scope of current PT network Distinguishing the different level of expected performance : IFM readers : hi-throughput turnstiles, bus validator, vending machine Common readers : home readers, inspection devices PT network accepting IFM readers Common readers only contactless cards (Class 1 PICC) Limited Interoperability (transitional period only) fare media with multiple form factors (any size of cards, smart objects, NFC phones ) Standard Interoperability Requirement about support for Classes 2 & 3 objects released for a transitional period All requirements are applicable Less constraining requirements on Performance (i.e. Operating distance & time to detection) 5 CEN PWI Contactless Communication

7 Smart Ticketing Alliance s Certification Working Group Defining a EU wide process for warranting contactless communication interoperability between transit contactless readers and media Based on CEN TC 278 implementation requirements and test plan Need for certification of contactless readers and media to create trust Such certification shall be issued by a Certification Body Challenge: how to build such a process at the European level? Establishment of a Group of Certification Bodies under the Smart Ticketing Alliance aegis: Ensures consistency of certification process And mutual recognition of delivered certificates Selection of one or several Certification Bodies (CB) by Smart Ticketing Alliance members: Each CB accredites laboratories authorized to carry out tests according to the new CEN TC 278 Contactless Communication standards. CBs issue certificates to devices" that have successfully passed tests in accredited laboratories Target : certification process operational by
