1 Allison Bourke Candidate for Section Representative University of Michigan Student Member Region B Collegiate Representative Region B Collegiate Newsletter Editor University of Arizona Section President University of Arizona Section Secretary University of Arizona Student Member I recently moved to northern Virginia from frigid Michigan for my first non-academic employment. I am happy I made the move because of all this area has to offer. I am also delighted to have time to be involved with SWE again, and I hope to become very active by becoming a section representative. I have one year of COR experience, so I feel this position would fit me perfectly and, at the same time, I can learn more about this section and its members. I have many SWE recognitions I value including: Region Newsletter Award; Medium student section largest membership increase; and the co-founder of the University of Arizonas Annual Evening with Industry. I value the SWE friendships I have made, the skills I have attained, and appreciate the empowerment and guidance I have experienced from other SWE members. I feel the best way of giving back from these positive experiences is to become a leader in SWE, so I can have the same encouraging affect on the next generation of women engineers. Allison Bourke is a patent examiner for United States Patent and Trademark Office in Alexandria, VA. Allison examines art related to photoelectric and thermoelectric power generation. Prior to the USPTO Allison held internships at ATK Thiokol and Argonne National Lab. Allison holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Arizona and a Masters of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan. Adrianne Cooper Candidate for Professional Development Vice President SWE-BWS Section Member, Southern Maryland Representative University of Tennessee Section President University of Tennessee Section President University of Tennessee Student Member University of Tennessee Student Member Penn State University Student Member 1
2 I just recently graduated from the University of Tennessee this past May where I was the section president for two years. A few years before my terms as president, the section kind of fell through the cracks and lost participation and involvement. I spent my two years as president rebuilding the section to have a sturdy foundation. In my first year as president, membership in the section doubled. Membership continued to grow the following year. In addition to membership growth, we started a lot of new activities and events and became involved with the campus. I left the section with confidence that SWE will continue to be active at the University of Tennessee for many more years. After being so active in SWE in college, I wanted to continue in my professional career. I was disappointed when I moved to Southern Maryland to find out that there wasn't much participation in the area. With the help of a few other ladies, we have been able to gain some participation in Southern Maryland. Since I have been here, I have hosted a SWE information luncheon, helped out with Girl Scouts in Leonardtown, helped judge the SWE awards at the St. Mary's County Science fair, and organized the Women's History Month Breakfast. I hope to see continued growth of SWE in Southern Maryland. I'm looking forward to being able to extend my leadership onto the section level and become more involved with the Baltimore-Washington Section. I would love to have the opportunity to be your Professional Development Vice President. Adrianne Cooper graduated from University of Tennessee with a BS in Electrical Engineering in May of Currently she is a Computer Engineer at NAVAIR and is in the Engineer and Scientist Development Program (ESDP). Within this three year rotational program, she serves on the ESDP council as a representative of the ESDPs in her division. Adrianne is looking forward to seeing where her engineering career will take her.
