4 THE ANANDA SPA INSTITUTE IS INDIA S first and only internationally accredited Spa Training Institute, based at Hyderabad. The owning and operating company, IHHR Hospitality Pvt. Ltd., operates the highly acclaimed and award winning destination spas Ananda in the Himalayas at Rishikesh and Shanti Ananda Maurice in Mauritius.. The institute has 2,100m² (22,000 sq. ft.) of floor space over 3 floors and will have three student intakes a year, with enrolments in January, May and September and with CIBTAC and ITEC accreditation for the Internationalcurriculum. 9 AYURVEDA IS PROBABLY THE OLDEST existing knowledge system on the healing process. It is based on an understanding of the complex interaction between man and nature. Hence Ayurveda s definition of health is not merely at the physical level but also at the mental, emotional, social, spiritual and environmental levels. Ayurveda treatment is based on the sustainable use of nature s offerings: plant, mineral and animal products, as well as various treatment modalities, including diet and lifestyle modification, body treatments and internal medications. This all-encompassing holistic approach makes Ayurveda one of the fastest growing CAM (complementary and alternative) healthcare systems worldwide. Since Ayurveda places equal emphasis on both pre-emptive and curative wellness, it is also becoming a treatment of choice at many spas globally. One important aspect of Ayurveda is its external body treatments. A unique understanding of the human body has enabled Ayurveda to create and develop over 20 unique treatments, including oil treatments, wraps and scrubs. Each of these treatments offers a unique combination of over 200 different herbs. Although research is currently ongoing in different countries in order to better understand the rationale and logic behind these different treatments, modern science is still unable to fully explain the undoubted efficacy with which these treatments contribute to wellness. In view of the growing popularity of Ayurveda worldwide,ananda has decided to commence an AyurvedaTherapy Training Programme, the details of which are described below. 13 Ayurveda treatments normally fall into two categories: shodhana or detoxification and shamana or pacification. The detoxification treatments are more intense, as these draw the toxins from all the body into the alimentary canal, thence to be flushed out. The highly intense procedures of the detoxification treatments include rigorous preparation and post-treatment recuperation procedures; in fact, the preparatory and post-treatment procedures are essential parts of the main procedure, for without the two the main procedure would hardly have any effect. Panchakarma: literally meaning five procedures : has become popular worldwide for its efficacy in detoxification. However, all too often, the treatments are not practiced to their full potential, which has led to wide misgivings among users Aim To create high quality panchakarma technicians who can practice panchakarma in a safe, compassionate, efficient and knowledgeable manner. Duration of the Programme 320 hours: 8 weeks; 5 days a week; 8 hours per day. Eligibility criteria Those who have already been through an Ayurveda study programme and are well versed with the basic principles and practices; preference will be given to Ayurveda physicians and others who have already had considerable experience in the field of Ayurveda

15 TEACHING METHODOLOGY The teaching methodology is a combination of theory, practical and interactive sessions, which include: Basic Sanskrit classes to familiarise students with the primary characteristics of the Devanagari script Exposure to the primary Ayurveda texts: the Charaka Samhita, Sushrutha Samhita and Ashtanga Hrdaya. Students will also be referred to other classical texts such as the Ashtanga Samgraha, Sarvangdhara Samhita and Bhavaprakasha Interactive sessions, organised to enable students to delve deeper into each topic to expand understanding Live demonstrations as well as video demonstrations of different procedures Hands-on work wherein students will work on each other in providing and receiving treatments Daily yoga and meditation sessions for physical, psychological and spiritual wellness. These sessions will improve physical flexibility, postural awareness, breathing and concentration levels, all of which are central to effectively providing treatment to others. Students will also be encouraged to follow an Ayurveda way of life during the course so that they learn to consider their own wellness. Therapists/healers must be well in themselves before they can facilitate the healing of another.

17 THE ADVANCED YOGA TEACHERS TRAINING PROGRAMME focuses on advancing the practitioners understanding of Yoga as a science of wellness from a perspective rooted in the richness of a time-tested tradition. This course is not only aimed at certifying teachers but at bringing them up to date with the different global practices and trends on styles of hatha yoga in relation to Ayurveda and individual needs. Over the past two decades, many popular styles of hatha yoga have emerged. New Yoga teachers have a responsibility to advise and design sequences and series based on an understanding of hatha yoga that is broader than the understanding merely of the specific schools in which they have been trained. The integration of Yoga and Ayurveda is a unique offering of this course. As the Programme aims to impart the understanding of Yoga as an art of wellness, it is rooted in the holistic approach to therapy. To this end, the full understanding of the integration of Yoga and Ayurveda is critical. The traditional practice of Indian Yoga reveals in detail the tools necessary for good health management. This training programme professionally packages this knowledge using benchmarked scientific methods. The syllabus comprises modules that range from the philosophy of Yoga, to the physiological, from the practical to the spiritual aspects. The pre-arrival work is designed to prepare students with the content so that they are able to engage in in-depth discussions on an advanced level. Think of this as a Masters level academic programme where students undertake substantial self-study and preparation as part of the discipline.

18 Part of being a well-versed Yoga teacher requires a lot of self-study and in-depth analysis of content. The book reports are expected to manifest these qualities and will therefore count significantly in the selection process. In the reports, students should incorporate aspects of their own experiences and teachings. The book report is of 1000 words; the format should be a typed manuscript in 1.5 or double line-space, typed using Arial or Times New Roman normal (not bold) font, 12 point size, on plain white A4 paper. The books are available at many bookstores and online. Read each of the books and write one report for each book, structured on one of the following options: a) overview of the book (or) b) summary of one chapter (or) c) elaboration on one point The following four books are mandatory reading: 1) HathaYogapradipika by the Bihar School of Yoga 2) Yoga Mala by Pattabi Jois 3) Yoga and Ayurveda by David Frawley 4) Mantras and Meditation by Swami Vishnu-Devananda Reading in one of the following two books is mandatory. Student-applicants may choose one of these two philosophy books for the book report. Shat Karma Kriya, teaching and practising meditation and chanting, teaching basics.b) Basic Sanskrit: Students will learn the Sanskrit alphabet in the Devanagari script. 30 JOSEPHINE WACKETT Principal ASI Head of the Dept for International Therapies Josephine Wackett is one of the most experienced persons in the beauty and spa therapy industry internationally. She has more than 30 years in continuous practice, working in prestigious London salons before embarking on a career in teaching, and becoming the Principal of the famous Steiner Beauty School in London. During this time, Josephine has been a leader in enhancing Professionalism in the beauty therapy industry, creating credibility and setting standards within the profession, and working with dermatologists, thereby cementing co-operation with the medical profession. Josephine was one of the original members of BABTAC (British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology) and a founding examiner with CIBTAC (Confederation of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology). Josephine served as Chairperson of the CIBTAC Education Committee for a period of four years, and was a member of the BABTAC Council before becoming Chairperson. She is also a CIDESCO diploma holder. Josephine Wackett has also been Chairperson of the Hair and Beauty Advisory Committee for Kingston College, and Council Member of BISA (British International Spa Association).

31 DR. RAMKUMAR Head of the Dept. for Ayurvedic Therapies Dr. Ramkumar hails from a traditional Ayurveda family. After completing his formal Ayurveda education in 1991 from the Ayurveda College, Coimbatore, he has been occupied in education and strengthening Ayurveda, the primaryhealthcare tradition in India. He is Founder-Director ofpunarnava Ayurveda, an institute committed to Authentic Ayurveda for Universal Well-Being, with the primary objective of creation and sustenance of health for the global community in a cost-effective manner through Ayurveda and other traditional medical knowledge systems. From 1994 to 2003, he was Director of the Ayurvedic Trust in Coimbatore, India, a 100 bed hospital, offering treatment based on pure Ayurveda therapies. During this period, the hospital was acknowledged and recognized as one of the five best Ayurveda hospitals in India. As Executive Director of Arya Vaidya Pharmacy (AVP), a 60-year authentic Ayurveda institute based in South India, and as Member of the Ayushman Ayurvedic Trust, Dr. Ramkumar received the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) certification from the Government of India for AVP s three manufacturing units, which produce in excess of 400 Ayurveda medicinal formulations for use in India and other countries. He was also specifically involved in the creation of a network of Ayurveda centres to increase the awareness of Ayurveda and for promoting good healthcare practices in a number of countries: In India with the Taj group of hotels, the Sterling group, and the Mahindra group; in Malaysia at Petaling Jaya; and in the Sultanate of Oman. Dr Ramkumar has also been responsible for the creation and sustenance of a four-year programme titled Tatwaprakashini, a teaching module that is based on the gurukula model, specifically for overseas undergraduate students of Ayurveda. Dr. Ramkumar has spoken extensively and conducted workshops on Ayurveda in the Americas, Africa, Europe and South-East Asia.

32 RENU GULATI Head of the Dept. for Ayurvedic Therapies Renu Gulati was born in the UK and currently lives in Rishikesh. She graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1995 and has a Masters degree, graduating with Honours in Sanskrit and Indian Philosophy. She began her formal study of Ayurveda in 2000 at the College of Ayurveda in the UK. Her desire to study the subject more deeply led her to the Gujrat Ayurveda University where she studied for one year. She then went on to receive indepth practical training in Ayurveda and traditional Ayurveda therapies from the Arsha Yoga Vidya Peetam Trust, Coimbatore. Renu completed her PGDip in Ayurvedic Medicine in 2006 at the Middlesex University in London and is currently conducting research in Ayurveda for her MSc in Ayurvedic Medicine. Since 2004, Renu has been working with patients, giving lifestyle advice and Ayurveda therapies. Renu has also been instructing international students on a one-to-one basis in the principles and practices of Ayurveda treatment. She is also a qualified yoga teacher, having completed the Sivanananda Yoga Teachers Training course in Kerala in December 2003 and the Yoga Instructors Course with Vivekananda Kendra University in Bangalore in June Renu also organizes International Ayurveda and Yoga

33 BHAVINI MAHARAJ Head of the Dept. Advanced Yoga Teachers Training Programme Bhavini Maharaj (Kalan) has received training in authentic and traditional hatha yoga at the Sivananda Ashram in Kerala. She has been trained in other styles of hatha yoga, specifically the Ashtanga Vinyasa style in Mysore, Bikrams yoga in the USA, integral yoga from the Bihar School of Yoga lineage, and kundalini yoga. Having experience of different adaptations of Yoga and has contributed to the design of several Yoga festivals and workshops. Bhavini is now part of the Parmarth Niketan Ashram family in Rishikesh in India and is a full-time member of the Parmarth Yoga School spending 2-3 months every year teaching Yoga programmes, assisting at workshops, as well as teaching at the International Yoga Festival. She received her teacher s training certification from the Sivananda Ashram in Neyyar Dam, Kerala. This programme was an integral yoga training study with focus on all aspects of yogic lifestyle the philosophy of Yoga (Bhagavad-Gita and the Patanjali Yoga Sutras), understanding the anatomy of the human body with detailed emphasis on the scientific aspects of asana and pranayama practice, and combining specific sequences of the asana practice for basic, intermediate and advanced students, practising cleansing kriyas, undertaking karma yoga duties around the ashram, understanding and practising different types of meditation, as well as participating in evening satsang. Bhavini has been teaching the Sivananda traditional hatha yoga style at different retreats and festivals. * RYT200 Yoga Alliance Registered.

34 Students are obliged to follow certain standards of conduct, duties and responsibilities as described below: All students will be required to maintain a professional attitude and conduct at all times Misuse of published rules and regulations may be grounds for disciplinary action leading to dismissal. Use of drugs and/or alcohol on the Ananda Spa Institute s property is not tolerated. Foul language of any kind will not be tolerated and may be grounds for disciplinary action leading to dismissal. Insubordination to reasonable requests from a tutor, fellow student, member of staff or client may be grounds for disciplinary action leading to dismissal. Correct uniform and grooming is essential for all students at all times, whether at the Institute or associated location Students must take pride in and care of the Institute s environment, buildings, and grounds. The students of the Institute must adhere and act according to the following principles: Treat one another with politeness, courtesy and respect; ; Strive to become involved in every aspect of the Institute s life; Always be punctual; ; Remember to bring all necessary equipment (where applicable), books, etc. to the lectures and lessons Complete all course work, studies on time; Help keep the Institute s environment clean and tidy so that it is a welcoming place of peace and beauty; Think about one s own safety and that of others at all times; Be responsible for/and aware of one s own actions at all times. Take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and of other persons who may be affected. by their acts or omissions Co-operate with the Institute staff in complying with general and specific health and safety requirements set out by the Group/Corporate governors of the Institute. Not intentionally interfere with or misuse anything that has been provided in the interests of health and safety; disciplinary action may be taken against any student who does not comply with these requirements. Smoking Policy: The Institute operates a No Smoking policy on the premises and surroundings of the Institute. Dress Code: All ASI students will be required to dress uniformly. They must be neatly turned out at all times with attention to hygiene and cleanliness. Long hair must be neatly braided and short hair brushed away from the face and pinned back, International Therapies and Ayurveda : Students should be uniformly attired in black trousers and white short sleeved tunics (The tunics will be sold in 3 sizes(s/m/l) from the book shop). Yoga Students should be attired in white kurta pyjamas. (Kurta pyjamas can either be brought from home or will be available for sale at the book shop.) All students are to wear closed black, low-heeled, rubber-soled shoes.

35 The Student will Take responsibility for ensuring they know and understand what is required for successful completion of the programme. Make their workplace mentor aware of the particular nature, subjects, and demands of the programme. Apply themselves to their studies and assessment, by attending The Ananda Spa Institute at the allocated mes and to carry out all other self-directed learning/ studying on the allocated reading/study days and as required. Respect the possible need for confidentiality regarding information gained in the workplace in support of their studies. Keep their work place mentor and the programme leader informed of any relevant problems while doing the programme. Take their own responsibility for their own learning and development. The Programme Leader will Provide the student with guidance and support throughout the length of the programme. Monitor the progress of the student throughout the programme. Ensure that the student s work mentor is aware of the programme requirements and their responsibilities. Liaise with the work mentor regarding aspects of the programme and the progress of the student. Organise work visits as and when required. Organise the induction week liaising with other m e m b e r s o f t h e p r o g r a m m e t e a m. Ensure that all aspects of the programme are delivered effectively and meet the expectations of the student and employer.
