INTRODUCTION With the consolidation of University of Detroit and Mercy College of Detroit in 1990 to form the University of Detroit Mercy, a new University logo was created. A University logo refers to the graphic elements by which the University identifies itself visually. These include the University s name, colors and thin rules that enclose the name. This Identity Standards Manual provides a means to ensure clear and consistent communication of the University s identity. The manual states specific directions on the use of the University s official identity elements: logo, crest, typeface, school colors, etc. on printed materials and other special applications. The former University of Detroit and Mercy College of Detroit identity elements are no longer to be used as University identity on any printed materials. Questions? For answers to questions and resolutions of issues not covered by the Identity Standards Manual, please contact the Marketing & Public Affairs department UDM Logo and Style Guidelines can be found at id-style/index.htm UNIVERSITY LOGO UNIVERSITY SEAL/CREST 2 Marketing & Public Affairs
GRAPHIC UDM LOGO A digital copy of the UDM logo can be downloaded at www. udmercy.edu/mpa/library/ index.htm The logo represents the visual identity of University of Detroit Mercy. Placement of the name components must not be altered. The logo is divided into two sections separated by a thin rule; University is in the top section, while of Detroit is in the bottom on one line and Mercy is on the second line. The logo typeface is Palatino. The logo s type, as well as the space that falls between logo s border rule and the color blocks, must reverse to the paper color and appear white. Never attempt to recreate the logo. A digital copy of the UDM logo can be downloaded at library/index.htm. For rare exceptions when the University logo is not used, the full name of the University must be written out and predominantly displayed on the printed material(s). The logo should be used on all external materials for consistent branding of the University. Logo Colors When using color, the top section of the logo is in red (PMS 187); the bottom section is in blue (PMS 288). The preferred use of the UDM logo is in the approved PMS colors. However, in situations where the logo colors must be trapped due to printing in four-color processing, please contact Marketing & Public Affairs for the correct percentages that best reflect the logo colors. If using the PMS or process colors is cost prohibitive, the logo may be used in black ink. When this version is used, the top section is screened to 60 percent black, while the bottom section and outside rule are 100 percent black. Inside borders and type must remain white or reverse to the paper color. However, printing the logo on dark colored paper should be avoided. In some instances, it is acceptable to use the logo in solid black instead of using the 60 percent screen. It is never acceptable, however, to produce the logo in black ink on letterhead or to print the logo in colors other than PMS red and blue or black. Also, the logo must never be printed in red only or blue only. COLOR USAGE: PMS # 187 (Red) PMS # 288 (Blue) PMS # 187 Inside borders and type to remain white or reverse to paper stock. PMS # 288 TYPEFACE: Palatino BLACK INK USAGE: 60% Black 100% Black USE ON DARK BACKGROUND: Logo s background should be white. 100% BLACK: For some exceptions approved by Marketing & Public Affairs, logo can be 100% black. MINIMUM SIZE: 5/8 inch wide UDM Logo and Style Guide 3
GRAPHIC UDM LOGO (CONTINUED) Use on a Dark Background When printing the logo against a solid ink coverage, it still should be printed in the PMS 187 (red) and PMS 288 (blue) with the logo s background in white or paper color. If printing in black only, the top portion of the logo should be 60 percent black, while the bottom section and outside rule should be 100 percent black. The inside rules and type must reverse to white or the paper color. Avoid printing the color logo on dark paper stock as it could alter the logo colors. Size The standard logo size is 2 x 1-1/4, although it can be used larger or smaller. The minimum size that this logo may be used is 5/8 in length. Typography The UDM logo is in Palatino typeface. Although other than the logo the University does not have an official University typeface, suggested typefaces for print publications, promotional items and other applications include: Palatino, (Continued) PALATINO PALATINO BOLD TIMES TIMES BOLD FRANKLIN GOTHIC FRANKLIN GOTHIC DEMI GILL SANS GILL SANS BOLD abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ !@#$%^&*() abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ !@#$%^&*() abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ !@#$%^&*() abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ !@#$%^&*() abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ !@#$%^&*() abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ !@#$%^&*() abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ !@#$%^&*() abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ !@#$%^&*() 4 Marketing & Public Affairs
GRAPHIC THE UDM LOGO TITAN ATHLETICS LOGO Franklin Gothic, Times and Gill Sans. However, it is not good design to mix more than two or three typefaces in one piece. Good graphic communication for UDM depends on simple and consistent use of the approved logo. A digital copy of the UDM logo can be downloaded at index.htm. Clothing and Promotional Materials Please contact Marketing & Public Affairs for guidelines and design ideas for using the logo on clothing and promotional materials. The UDM crest should not be used on these items. Titan Athletic logos The Detroit Titans Athletics logo is authorized for use only by Titan Athletics. The logo s colors are PMS 187 (red), PMS 288 (blue) and PMS COOL GRAY 3. The logo can be utilized in these three PMS colors, as seen below, or it can be trapped for four-color process printing. The logo can also be printed in all black, black and gray (screens of black), all blue (PMS 288) or all red (PMS 187.) The logo can also be reversed to white on a solid background as seen below. Call for information about the graphic guidelines for Titan Athletics logos. UDM Logo and Style Guide 5
GRAPHIC THE UNIVERSITY CREST (SEAL) The UDM crest is a unique and honored symbol of the University s identity. It is not intended for use as a graphic or a design element, and it should not be used in publications or materials in which use of the UDM logo is appropriate as the University s identifier. The UDM crest is to be used only on official institutional documents, such as formal proclamations, certificates, invitations, etc., issued from the offices of the President or the Vice President for Academic Affairs. Any other use of the crest is limited and should always be referred to the Marketing & Public Affairs department before publication. Origins UDM s crest includes design elements representing both the Jesuit and Mercy traditions. The left side of the crest portrays two wolves at a pot, symbolizing the generosity of the Loyola family (Ignatius Loyola was the founder of the Society of Jesus). After all the family and the workers were fed, even the wild animals had the pot to lick. The motto of the Jesuits, Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam (For the Greater Glory of God), is located above the wolves and pot. The date 1877 refers to the founding of University of Detroit by the Jesuits. On the right side of the crest is a white cross, which is the symbol of the Religious Sisters of Mercy, who founded Mercy College of Detroit in The three canettes are taken from the coat of arms of the Archdiocese and the City. The open book is the traditional symbol for a college. Upon the open pages is inscribed Mercy College s motto: Maria, Sedes Sapientiae (Mary, Seat of Wisdom). The visual elements are contained by a thin black rule. University of Detroit Mercy is placed in the red circular band surrounding the visual elements. The circular band is offset by white space, 1/8 wide and contained by a thin circular rule. COLOR BREAKS: PMS # 187 (Red) PMS # 288 (Blue) Black TYPESETTING: Palatino Bold MINIMUM SIZE: 1-1/8 inch wide 6 Marketing & Public Affairs
GRAPHIC THE UNIVERSITY CREST (SEAL) Policy for using the UDM crest on printed documents The crest must only be printed in the official UDM colors, PMS 187 and 288, in combination with black, OR in black alone. The crest should not be used in combination with the UDM logo. (See separate policies regarding the UDM logo). The official UDM crest in digital format must be obtained from the Marketing & Public Affairs Department for any approved use. Colors The crest colors are red (PMS 187), blue (PMS 288), white and black. Red is used for the circular band s background with the lettering in white. Blue is used for the crest s right side. Black is used for the visual elements on the crest s left side and the lettering and page design on the book in addition to the two thin circular lines. The background of the crest s left side is in white, as well as the visual elements on the crest s right side and the circular band s lettering and margins. It is also acceptable to reproduce the crest in black for a one-color application. However, it is never acceptable to reproduce the crest in red only or blue only. In situations where the crest colors must be trapped due to printing in four-color processing, please contact Marketing & Public Affairs for the correct percentages that best reflect the crest colors. The flame and the three canettes were designed to be yellow. However, due to cost considerations, the yellow is not used in printed materials. Integrity of the crest In any approved use, the crest may not be altered in any way, including colors, backgrounds, fonts, proportions, or existing elements of the crest s design, nor is it permissible to use the crest as a design element or in combination with type or other graphics to create a new logo or design. Size The preferred minimum size to use the crest is 1-1/8 wide to ensure readability. Policy for using the UDM crest on the World Wide Web, etc. Generally, the crest should not be used in any online format. This policy reflects the following factors: The UDM logo, rather than the crest, is the University s primary identifier, and should be used consistently on all official communications, including websites. The crest is not intended for use primarily as a graphic or design element. The crest contains small details that do not reproduce well online. The crest has been established for use only on official institutional documents, usually comprising executive-level communications issued from the offices of the President or the Vice President for Academic Affairs. Questions and requests Questions about this policy, as well as requests for use of the crest, should be referred to the UDM Marketing & Public Affairs department: UDM Logo and Style Guide 7
GRAPHIC UDM SPONSORS LOGOS The University of Detroit Mercy is sponsored by two religious orders: The Religious Sisters of Mercy (who founded Mercy College of Detroit) and the Society of Jesus (who founded the University of Detroit). Each sponsoring order has its own graphic representation that is recognized by the order. On occasion, it may be necessary to use these graphics in University publications or on the website. On this page are the individual guidelines required by each order for use of its logo. The Sisters of Mercy of the Americas Logo Please observe the following standards when using the name and logo of The Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas: The official name of the organization is: The Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas The official logo of the organization is the use of the words Sisters of Mercy of the Americas (in both English and Spanish) in Palatino typeface along with the Mercy cross. The logo can be presented in one or two colors: When the logo is printed in two colors, use PMS Mark PMS Logo type When the logo is printed in one color, use Option One - PMS 280 Option Two - Black Whenever possible, the entire logo should be used to brand all publications, stationery and other media representing the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. However, in some cases the cross may be used alone as a design element. No other words should accompany the mark. The mark may only be printed in one of the following three colors: Option One-Black Option Two-PMS 280 Option Three-PMS 215 The Society of Jesus Logo The logo for the Society of Jesus is the graphic representation for the Jesuit Order and its Province(s). The logo consists of a wordmark (Jesuits) and the starburst. Together they form a lockup. The elements of the lockup are not used individually. The logo colors are PMS 187 (red) and PMS 451 (gray). Vertical and Horizontal versions of the logo have been developed. The horizontal version is the preferred treatment. The vertical version of the logo may be used depending on space constraints. The wordmark is set in Friz Quadrata; the typeface is reserved for the wordmark and should not be displayed for any other use. The word mark used by the Province is a handkerned version of that created by the Jesuit Conference. Safe Area A safe area should be left on all sides of the logo in which there is no other imagery, text or graphic element. The safe area is defined as 1/2 the height of the starburst insignia. Please follow the guidelines below for logo usage: The logo should never be reproduced in non-approved colors The size and positioning of the elements should always be in the approved format The typeface or treatment should never be altered The starburst insignia should never be used as a graphic element, modified or ghosted Scaling should be done proportionately 8 Marketing & Public Affairs
STATIONERY LETTERHEAD, BUSINESS CARDS, ENVELOPES LETTERHEAD The letterhead, envelopes, business cards and other printed stationery items are a significant part of the impression University of Detroit Mercy makes to its external community, and it is important for these materials to reflect quality and consistency. 12 UDM STYLE USAGE PRINT CONTENT The Marketing & Public Affairs department follows the Associated Press Stylebook for general style and grammar. The following guidelines relate specifically to University of Detroit Mercy references or other common style uses. For more style questions, call M&PA at University of Detroit Mercy The University name can only be identified by University of Detroit Mercy or (on second reference) UDM or the University. When using the University, always capitalize U if referring directly to UDM. The, however, is never used as part of the formal name of the University and is not capitalized, unless it is the start of a sentence. Campus Capitalize campus when it is used as a formal name, e.g., McNichols Campus. Capitalize campus also on second reference when it is referring directly to a specific UDM campus. Do not capitalize campus when it is being used generically, e.g., UDM s campuses retain much of their historical charm, or in reference to more than one campus, e.g., The McNichols and Riverfront campuses will soon undergo significant changes. The University s three campuses are: McNichols Campus Riverfront Campus (School of Law) Corktown Campus (School of Dentistry) Schools/Colleges Capitalize when referring directly to a specific school or college (with or without the college or school name). Don t capitalize when using generically, e.g., Enrollment in the schools and colleges increased significantly. The name of the college or school should always be capitalized even if it is not preceded by school or college. For example, Engineering & Science is celebrating its centennial in College names that have the word and in them should use the &, e.g., Liberal Arts & Education. However, with the College of Health Professions and McAuley School of Nursing, the word and is used because it is recognizing two academic entities within the College. Professional Schools Capitalize the names of the professional schools when using the formal name, e.g., School of Law or School of Dentistry. On second reference or when referencing less formally, use the lower case law school or dental school. Other second reference options for the professional schools include: UDM Law and UDM Dental, and the School, with school capitalized. Program/Department Names Capitalize the name of a program or department, e.g. Department of Marketing & Public Affairs. Marketing & Public Affairs would also be correct, as would Digital Media Studies Program. If using department or program on second reference, do not capitalize. Subjects Except for English, subjects should not be capitalized. For example, The student excelled in mathematics and the sciences, but he proved less successful in English literature. Course Names Capitalize the full name of a course, but if a course is referenced generically, it should not be capitalized. For example, Freshman John Jones will take Accounting 101 in the fall semester and another accounting course in the winter. Building names Capitalize the names of buildings, e.g., Warren Loranger Architecture Building. Do not capitalize building when it is used alone, even in direct reference to a UDM building. Below are the formal names of UDM buildings: McNichols Campus: Calihan Hall (Athletics) Chemistry Building (Continued) 12 Marketing & Public Affairs
UDM STYLE USAGE PRINT CONTENT (CONTINUED) Commerce & Finance Building (Business Administration) Engineering Building Fisher Administration Center Ford Life Sciences Building Holden Hall Jane & Walter O. Briggs Building (Liberal Arts & Education) Lansing-Reilly Hall McNichols Library Quad Commons the collective reference for the four buildings that comprise these student residence halls. Quads may be used as a second or casual reference. (Add Commons to East, West, North, South when referring to a specific building.) Reno Hall Shiple Hall Student Center Warren Loranger Architecture Building Riverfront Campus: Dowling Hall (law school building) Corktown Campus: dental clinic building (informal reference) classroom building (informal reference) Degrees Only capitalize when using the name formally, e.g., Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Try to avoid using Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. Other examples of proper degree designation are B.S. in Business Administration or bachelor s degree in Business Administration. Master s/bachelor s Always use the apostrophe. Degree abbreviations Always put periods between the letters, e.g., B.A., M.A., M.B.A., Ph.D. Religious References Put periods between S.J., but not RSM. Sister or Father can be abbreviated to Sr. and Fr. on first reference, unless they are being used in a salutation on a letter or other formal purposes like certificates or awards. When using an individual s name on first reference, use John Staudenmaier, S.J. On second reference, use Fr. Staudenmaier. It is unnecessary to duplicate the religious reference by using Fr. John Staudenmaier, S.J. or Rev. John Staudenmaier, S.J., except in a letter salutation or other formal document. A comma should follow the religious reference in a sentence. For example, John Staudenmaier, S.J., leads the University s Mission Retreats. Identification (on second reference) Use a person s full name on first reference. On second reference, use the person s last name, except in the case of religious. Always use Fr. or Sr. before the name on second reference. Individual s titles Capitalize a person s title if it precedes his/her name. If it follows, do not capitalize. For example, President Antoine M. Garibaldi delivered the convocation speech or Antoine M. Garibaldi, president of the University, delivered the convocation speech. In the second example, though the individual s title may not be capitalized, his or her department name should be capitalized, e.g., John Doe, vice president for Business and Finance. However, if the person s title contains a description of his/her role rather than a department name, do not capitalize, e.g., Jane Doe, administrative assistant. Professional Credentials For University publications, do not use professional or academic credentials, e.g., John Doe, Ph.D. Also, do not use Dr. before a name for those with Ph.D.s. Instead, use John Doe, professor of Chemistry, earned his Ph.D. from UDM. Academic credentials, however, may be used for formal/special purposes such as the Commencement program and for press releases. (Continued) UDM Logo and Style Guide 13
UDM STYLE USAGE PRINT CONTENT (CONTINUED) For those with medical or dental professional degrees, however, M.D. or D.D.S. can follow their names, and their names can be preceded by Dr. Religious designations should also follow those individual s names, see religious references. Alumni Alumni should be used for a plural reference; alumnus should be used for an individual male or alumna for female. Never use the slang, alum. Alumnus is also an acceptable generic reference for any individual. Alumni Class year In all alumni publications, an alumnus class year should be included with his/ her name with the following style: Jane Doe 89 was active as a student. Class year information is available in Raiser s Edge or from the Alumni Relations Office. Attribution (quoting a source) When attributing the source of a quote in UDM publications, use the past tense said. For example, Enrollment forecasts look positive, said Denise Mallett, vice president for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs. Publication/article titles Italicize the names of books, magazines, journals and other publications. Use quote marks around the titles of articles, chapter names, etc. Headline style Headlines should always contain an active verb and be a complete thought. Except for the first word, headlines, as a rule, should be lowercase. Cooperative Education When abbreviated, use the hyphenated co-op. Titan Athletics The single form Titan should be used when describing the sport, e.g., Titan basketball, Titan golf. When describing the team or players, use Titans, e.g., The Titans won the conference title. Detroit Titans is also an acceptable reference for the Titans. Fundraising One word, both as a noun and as an adjective. Health care Two words, but one word if used to modify. Time When providing a specific time, the proper style is 6 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. First-year, Second-year, etc. When using first-year, second-year, thirdyear or fourth-year as a modifier, always hyphenate. For example, John is a firstyear Architecture student. or First-year Architecture student John Jones spent hours in the studio perfecting his project. However, it is not correct to hyphenate when saying, John is in his first year of the Architecture program. 14 Marketing & Public Affairs
UDM STYLE USAGE WEB CONTENT, TECHNOLOGY & SO- CIAL MEDIA TERMS General Web Content Guidelines: Keep copy to a minimum as most people scan headlines and online news and information quickly. Use short, bulleted lists of information or tables. Put the most important information first. Keep websites updated regularly. Visitors will lose interest in a website that remains stagnant. Keep all website pages as consistent in style and navigation as possible so that visitors always know they are still on a particular website and can find their way around.
