Stu s Double Jeopardy Create your Own Quizzes: Step-by-Step Making a Jeopardy Quiz file is really simple, but making a great Jeopardy Quiz file is not so simple and requires some planning. Jeopardy is a game of Categories. There are six categories. Each category has five questions in it. The questions all have a dollar value, from $200 to $1000. The cheaper questions should be easier and the more expensive ones should be harder. So in total, you ll need to write a total of thirty (30) questions and answers. Then you ll need one more question for Final Jeopardy. Some questions before you start: Do you want an overall theme for the whole quiz? eg. all questions relate to European Countries Do you want random categories only? eg. each category is about a different topic Do you want to show answers and expect questions as responses? i.e. The way the real Jeopardy gameshow works Do you just want ordinary questions and expect ordinary answers? Stu s Jeopardy can handle either format! Once you ve answered these questions for yourself, it s probably a good idea to start with a piece of paper and work on one Category at a time. You ll need: A Category Title for each of six categories don t make them too long! 5 x Questions and Answers for each category Sort the questions from easiest to hardest (work out the order of the questions) A Final Jeopardy question and answer When you ve completed all of this, you re ready to create a Jeopardy Quiz File. Creating the Jeopardy Quiz File: Run Stu s Double Jeopardy Select however many players it doesn t matter Select an existing quiz file it doesn t matter which one Move your mouse pointer to the top of the Jeopardy window and the menu will appear. Select the Jeopardy Question Editor The current question file will be displayed and Category 1 will be shown Click the Make a New Quiz button at the top and the boxes will all clear Type in the Title for Category 1 then type in the questions and answers for that category When that category is finished, click on Category 2 and repeat through to Category 6 When all Categories are complete, click on Final Jeopardy! and type in the question and answer you have made for that Finally, click the Save button and you will be asked for a name to save the quiz as. All Jeopardy quiz files normally start with J-, eg. J-SAFETY. They normally go into the QUIZZES folder, but you can save them elsewhere if you really want to. Put an appropriate name in, not too long and click the Save button and you ve now made a new quiz and you can immediately play it! How to include a Daily Double or Two:

You can make any question in the quiz a Daily Double, simply by adding two asterisks as the beginning of the selected question. eg. **Who was the second President of the United States? It is recommended that you have no more than two Daily Doubles in any one quiz. You can hide them wherever you like. So what happens when someone selects the question that is a Daily Double? They get the exclusive chance to wager any or all of the money they ve accumulated on that next question. Adds some further interest to the game, but you can leave them out totally if you like. Final Jeopardy! is like a Daily Double for everybody. They each wager their own amounts on the question. Editing your Quiz File: You don t have to finish creating your quiz in one sitting. You can start it, Save it, then return to it at any time in the future to continue working on it. Quiz Making: A Whole Class Activity Why is it that so many teachers think they need to create every resource that their class will use? Now you have Stu s Double Jeopardy as an educational and fun activity for the class to play to help with reviewing subjects, why not consider getting the class to actually create the quizzes? Classes can create quizzes for themselves Classes can create quizzes for other classes at the school Classes can create quizzes to publish at this site and share with the world! So how can a whole class create a quiz? Well, for a start we have six category titles to work out: Brainstorm with the whole class to work out what those category titles should be. Come up with twenty different titles and whittle them down to the final six Split the class up into six groups with each group working on one of the categories Get each person in each group to contribute questions (and answers) for their category Come up with about 10 questions per group Have the group decide on the best five questions to use in their category Sort the questions from easiest to hardest so that the dollar values can be applied The whole class can brainstorm the Final Jeopardy! question (and answer) This whole process can be done off-computer, but can require additional research in order to ensure accuracy of the questions and answers. When ready, the task of typing in the quiz into Stu s Double Jeopardy and proofing it can be rotated among students in the class (as I m sure once you get started creating quizzes, you ll want to make one for every topic covered in class). The whole process of making a quiz reinforces what has been learnt in class and makes for better understanding of the subject content. The groupwork nature of this activity means that everybody gets to contribute to the creation of a shareable and re-usable product and the fact that student quizzes can be made available to the whole world through this website, provides motivation to create more. Swap quizzes with other classes at your school! Get a student or two from the class that created the quiz to M.C. the gameshow for another class! There are so many skills you can develop in your student through this one amazing tool.

Include Images in your Quizzes: Step by Step With Jeopardy v3, you can choose to have an image by itself as the question, or have an image with a text question beside it as shown below: An image/photo without question text An image/photo with question text to the right The inclusion of photos brings a whole new dimension to Stu s Double Jeopardy! Here s how you can create your own multimedia quiz: 1. You need to think about the type of questions you could ask that include a photo, image or diagram. Some examples include: A Movie Quiz (as described above) A Parts Identification Quiz Interpret that diagram Visual Puzzles Quiz A Spot the Difference Quiz 2. As normal, put your 31 questions together into six categories with five questions in each (plus Final Jeopardy!) 3. Type all your questions into a NEW Quiz File in the Jeopardy Question Editor 4. Save the new Quiz File into a folder of its own inside the quizzes folder, or elsewhere on your computer. Every JPG Quiz MUST be in its OWN folder! Name the folder appropriately, then open the folder and name your quiz appropriately. 5. Sizing your photos: Gather/make your appropriate image for each question. The images/photos must be prepared and named carefully. All images must be save in JPEG format. No other format is acceptable. Any image you use MUST have a MINIMUM height of 50 pixels and

MAXIMUM height of 400 pixels. If your images are any taller than this, they will be automatically cropped to 400 pixels. The width of your images can vary from a minimum of 50 pixels to a maximum of 860 pixels. If you wish to include a text question with your image, the MAXIMUM width of your image should be 400 pixels. You should not type question text for any image greater than 400 pixels wide. For these wider images, just type a dot (.) for the question text You can use PhotoFiltre to adjust the pictures. 6. Naming your photos: Rename each JPG file so that the first question ($200) in the first category is called J1-1.jpg, the second question in the first category is J1-2.jpg and so on until the last question ($1000) in the sixth category is called J6-5.jpg. The Final Jeopardy question image file must be called JFJ.jpg. In total, you should have 31 JPG files if you have an image with every question. Place all the needed JPG files into the same folder as the quiz (.txt) file. 7. If you ve done this all correctly, run Jeopardy and test your JPG Quiz file by opening the quiz inside your newly created folder. All the images should just appear! Make an MP3 Jeopardy Game!: Step by Step See the CD Music icon above the question? You click it and it plays the question s attached MP3 file automatically, bringing a whole new dimension to the game! Here s how you can create your own multimedia quiz: 1. You need to think about the type of questions you could ask that include a sound file. Some examples include: Song Title and Artist (as described above) What s that sound? Name that Animal sound? Famous People s Speeches Identify the celebrity s voice, etc. 2. Put your 31 questions together into six categories with five questions in each (plus Final Jeopardy!) 3. Type all your questions into a NEW Quiz File in the Jeopardy Question Editor and above the questions, click the option to say YES to Enable MP3 Music Clips for this Question File. 4. Save the new Quiz File into a folder of its own inside the quizzes folder, or elsewhere on your computer. Every MP3 Quiz MUST be in its OWN folder! Name the folder appropriately, then open the folder and name your quiz appropriately.

4. Gather (if you haven t already) the 31 MP3 files you will need don t make them too long. You can use Audacity to trim them down appropriately. Place them all in the same folder as your new quiz file. Just supply one for each question that needs an audio clue. 5. Rename each MP3 file so that the first question ($200) in the first category is called J1-1.mp3, the second question in the first category is J1-2.mp3 and so on until the last question ($1000) in the sixth category is called J6-5.mp3. The Final Jeopardy question sound file must be called JFJ.mp3. Check the files in the supplied MP3 quiz folder for clarification of this. In total, there need to be 31 MP3 files and a quiz TXT file in the folder and nothing else. NOTE: With Stu s Double Jeopardy v3 or later, you do not have to have an MP3 file for every question. Just supply one for each question that needs an audio clue. 6. If you ve done this all correctly, run Jeopardy and test your MP3 Quiz file by opening the quiz inside your newly created folder. It should just play! The music will stop whenever you click a Tick or a Cross button and can be restarted by clicking the CD Music icon.
