During the past 100 years, our company has always ranked among the leading machine-tool manufacturers and has directly influenced the trends and developments in this field of industry in the world. The ŠKODA machine tools have been sold and found many satisfied customers in practically all important world markets. The current year, so important for ŠKODA MACHINE TOOL a.s., has also been marked by appearance of the new company owner, the Czech company ALTA. We are convinced that this step has opened another hopeful chapter in the company s history. With the new owner, ŠKODA MACHINE TOOL has become a member company of a group of leading Czech machine tool manufacturers with rich and successful history of production of medium-sized to largest machine tools. The business entity so created is characterised by excellent know-how and global market presence. The strategic partnership of the group companies uses the synergy of the co-operating expert teams from the member companies facilitating faster development of the group portfolio products, technically progressive solutions, innovations of machining processes and efficient provision of services. The ALTA group now offers, apart from heavy horizontal milling and boring machines, heavy centre lathes and special workstations manufactured by ŠKODA MACHINE TOOL, the products of TOS KUŘIM OS. a.s., it is middle size and heavy duty gantry type machining centres and floor type machining centres, and the products of ČKD BLANSKO OS. a.s., it is heavy vertical lathes. Such relationship implies on-going improvements in reliability and efficiency of earlier manufactured machines through major overhauls and modernisation projects. Since 1990, supplied to our customers have been altogether 507 heavy machine tools: horizontal milling and boring machines and heavy centre lathes. The tradition of successful projects and the good image of the ŠKODA trademark are the company s cornerstones. The growing demands concerning technological standards and labour efficiency result in demands for modernisation of older machines and bring interesting contracts to the company. ŠKODA MACHINE TOOL (ŠMT) offers execution of modernisation projects tailored to the customer needs. The technological capabilities of machine tools can be extended through delivery of new headstocks and modern accessories such as automated tool-changing equipment, milling and boring heads, chip conveyors, clamping plates and turntables for horizontal machines, and automated turrets, plate slide rests, grinding and milling equipment and tool and work-piece control devices for lathes. In a typical arrangement, the machine dismantling, upgrading and commissioning are performed by ŠMT experts at the customer s plant. The machine foundations can usually be left as they are. Following major overhauling and modernisation, the machines meet the EU (CE) requirements or other relevant technical standards in non-eu countries (UL, CSA and others). The modernised machines are subject to the same warranty conditions as any new machine. Every product will need, sooner or later, some maintenance and repairs. The manufacturing company stays in contact with its customers in order to obtain immediate and unbiased assessment of its products. In this way, the customer indirectly participates in development of new products. The latest development results are then applied in major overhauls and modernisation of older machine tools. The company also offers to its customers dedicated personal care of the purchased machines in the form of preventive examinations, provisions of services and spare-part deliveries. These services require a quality manufacturing base and teams of skilled experts. The company is known to possess excellent research, development and design capacities. Since May 1998, the company has had the ISO 9001 quality system certificate. The new orders for machine modernisation projects testify to the fact that these services are in demand. In this year alone, seven major contracts worth over CZK 200 million have been signed. Thus overhauling and modernisation have become an important complement of the machine-tool manufacturing line at the company ŠKODA MACHINE TOOL a.s. The growing demand for the company products and services in the first half of 2011 is indicative of economic revival in various territories and is a hopeful sign of future economic growth of the company. Regarding horizontal milling and boring machines, the manufacturers of windmill power unit components purchase modern modular machines of the HCW type series in various sizes. So far, orders have been received for horizontal machines of the HCW 1, HCW 2 and HCW 3 models. These highly sophisticated machines are characterised by outstanding parameters concerning machining power, speed and torque, as well as working precision, operator comfort and safety of the complete horizontal workstation. Supplied with the machines can be a wide range of accessories including turntables or milling and boring heads that find advantageous application in manufacturing of the windmill power unit component parts. Some of the machines are supplied in configurations tailor-made to the needs of the manufacturers of one or more specific components. 3 COMING OF THE GIANTS ŠKODA HCW 3 The market trends towards high performance and efficiency with lower energy requirements and the maximum effectiveness of manufacturing processes generally lead to the construction of ever larger products and equipment. Examples of such achievements are numerous. The largest gas turbine recently put in trial operation in Bavaria weighs 444 tons and its output power is 530MW. The largest windmill turbine with a threeblade propeller of diameter 126m works 126m above the sea level and can generate up to 7MW of electric energy. The biggest tanker in the world TI OCEANIA is a real giant 380m long with a propeller of 12m in diameter. It was built in the Daevoo shipyards in Okpo in South Korea. The biggest excavators manufactured by ThyssenKrupp are over 200m long and 100m high. The trend towards large products is also becoming evident in the growing demand for heavy horizontal milling and boring machines of the ŠKODA HCW type. For example, this year Chinese customers ordered the following machines: HCW 3 with spindle diameter 260 mm travel in X = 22 m and Y = 8 m, and a turntable with loading capacity of 160 t; HCW 4 with spindle diameter 260 mm travel in X = 26 m and Y = 8 m, and a turntable with loading capacity of 160 t; HCW 3 with spindle diameter 200 mm travel in X = 25 m and Y = 5 m, and a turntable with loading capacity of 100 t; HCW 3 with spindle diameter 200 mm travel in X = 25 m and Y = 5 m, and a turntable with loading capacity of 100 t. In order to fulfill the deadlines set by the final customer, another machining center type FRUF C, also by TOS KUŘIM, was included in the process of machining of the turbines. An optimum choice seems to be a machine with CNC rotary table with milling and turning (VTL) functions. The project is supported by Ministry of Trade and Industry of the Czech Republic as part of the department program of applied research and development called TIP The purpose of the project is to develop a workplace with the table clamping surface area of 3,000 x 3,000 mm, table travel of 1,500 mm, maximum loading capacity of 60 tons and adjustable rotation speed up to 80 RPM and 60,000 Nm maximum torque of rotation. The clamping surface will enable to mount a carousel plate with diameter of 3,000 or 3,700 mm. The turning operations will be performed by turning tools fastened in a special Capto tool holders, integrated with IZN lathe tool holders. The entire turning system will be clamped to the face of the headstock (instead of a particular milling head) and it will enable to storage in the pick-up magazine any time is needed to continue a standard milling operations, using exchangeable spindle head or quill. The table then operates as a standard rotary table. Significant demand for similar multi-purpose workplaces is expected especially in the area of power engineering, specifically the machining of windmill components. The machine is also equipped by a TOS KUŘIM VO automatic exchangeable universal spindle head, operating at 16-5,000 RPMs at max torque of 1,000 Nm. The main machine table dimensions are 2,500 x 8,000 mm where the additional turning table TRT 500 with diameter of 1,000 mm, max speed 500 RPMs and maximum loading capacity of 4,000 kg is placed. The TRT 500 table can be used for vertical as well as horizontal axis operation. 6 SKD 40/47 for ALLARD EUROPE NV of Belgium On 30 June 2011, following almost a full year s effort, the customer ALLARD EUROPE NV of Belgium accepted a second machine tool manufactured by ČKD BLANSKO this time the time-tested model SKD 40/47 D. This two-column vertical lathe with integrated C axis, clamping table of diameter 4,000mm and a milling spindle can work at speeds up to 100 r.p.m. Another machine of this type will follow shortly to be delivered to the Russian Tiazhmach Syzranj. It will probably be the last machine manufactured in the old factory premises in Blansko because all other machines will be assembled at the new hall of the affiliated company TOS KUŘIM OS, a.s. Model SKD 40/47 ranks among the most successful machines manufactured by ČKD BLANSKO throughout its long history and delivered to customers in countries such as Germany, China, Brazil, Russia or the Ukraine. In Czech Republic, the last machine of this type was manufactured for ŽĎAS, a.s. in The machine has undergone several mod- ernisation stages where the last one included a new solution for the C-axis drive using master-slave pinion wheels driving the toothed rim on the machine table and the compact motor-spindle combination incorporated in the front part of the machine slide. The development team at ČKD BLANSKO continue their work on modifications and upgrading of their machine designs so that these would meet most demanding requirements and follow the latest trends in vertical lathes. Such modifications consist of integrated hydrostatic slide-ways in axes X and Z, increased machining diameter (up to 10m with two-column machines) and, as the latest popular feature, Y-axis integration with travelling table or carousel. It should be noted that meeting the ambitious machine modernisation plans will be easier in co-operation with other ALTA Group member companies where it is expected that the new machines will include more modular parts designed by the development teams of ŠKODA MACHINE TOOL, TOS KUŘIM and ČKD BLANSKO. SKD 40/47 D (Allard) Important reference for power generation industry Among the vertical lathes manufactured by ČKD BLANSKO and installed at the customer plants in 2010 is one rather exceptional machine: SKD 63/70 D, the biggest two-column vertical lathe ever installed by the company. Exceptional is not only the machine size, but also the customer LMZ Leningradskyi Metalicheskyi Zavod of the OAO Silovie machiny group ( in the Russian Federation. LMZ is the biggest manufacturer of turbines and other power generation equipment in Russia. The company history dates back to 1857 and, in 2005, it ranked 5th on the list of companies with the largest installed power in the world after the renowned names such as Siemens, GE or Alstom. In any case, a machine delivered to such company makes up a first-class reference in both the Russian and world market and the engineers in Blansko can be proud of this achievement. The SKD 63/70 D machine is based on the wellproven concept of two-column lathes with a table of diameter 6,300mm, maximum work-piece diameter 7,000mm and work-piece weight up to 120t. The SKD 63/70 D (LMZ) table drive of the master-slave type has the rated power of 140kW. The machine includes a single carriage with a slide of 400 x 400mm with a built-in motor and spindle combination of rated power 37kW. The machine is intended for turning and milling operations. Immediately after commissioning, the machine started to be used in 3-shift operation in a machining workshop where it is working to its full capacity. In LMZ, the ČKD machine is the second largest vertical lathe and the operators are satisfied with its performance. In production at ČKD BLANSKO presently is another SKD 63/70 D machine intended for a Czech customer where it should be put in operation in the second half of As mentioned elsewhere in this brochure, the 7-metre vertical lathes are not the ultimate solutions at ČKD Blansko; development work is in progress on machines capable of handling work pieces up to 10m in diameter.
