4 Open The Door To Opportunity Whether your aspirations lie in the world of business, in the realm of technology, in health sciences, or the global opportunities in hospitality and culinary arts, George Brown postgraduate programs can prepare you for a specialized career path. Our programs combine theory with practical experience in your area of specialization. Our faculty members have years of experience and strong links to their professions. And our connections with industry, community and government ensure that our programs remain current and relevant. For example, our Centre for Community Services and Early Childhood has partnerships with over 1,000 contacts in community agencies. Stefano Pascucci International Business Management, Graduated Current position: Air Import Coordinator, ITN Logistics Group, Toronto, Ontario After graduating with a university degree in Political Science and Economics in 2007, Stefano Pascucci didn t feel qualified to enter the field of global commerce. George Brown s eight-month postgraduate program in International Business Management appealed because it offered courses that had immediate relevance to the workplace courses like Freight Forwarding, International Marketing and Global Entrepreneurship. After an intensive period of applied learning, Stefano secured a position in the air freight division of an import logistics company. His job is to make sure shipments arrive on time and intact, which is a complex daily challenge, and one that he enjoys. Accelerate your career University and college graduates come to George Brown to build on the foundation of their degree or diploma in order to find employment in their chosen field. A fasttrack diploma program such as Early Childhood Education or a graduate certificate in International Business Management offers a condensed, intensive, hands-on learning experience that often results in employment shortly after graduation. Go in a new direction For working professionals, our postgraduate programs open doors of opportunity to new or related fields. For instance, the Food and Nutrition Management certificate the only one of its kind in Ontario gives individuals with a background in food and beverage management the ability to apply their knowledge and experience in a healthcare setting. Our nursing postgraduate programs take the practice of nursing to an entirely new level through specialized training in areas such as critical care, perinatal intensive care and forensics. A flexible, responsive learning environment Students in our postgraduate programs enjoy smaller classes and more personalized interactions with professors and classmates. This enables them to build valuable professional networks after graduation. Some classes are even scheduled around full-time employment so that students can continue to work while they learn. Further, many postgraduate programs offer the opportunity to earn credits toward valuable industry designations simply by completing coursework. This is just one more way that we maximize students time and are responsive to their needs. The program was very practical. It taught me how to adapt to any situation on the fly, which is what I do on a daily basis. 2 georgebrown.ca

5 Get real. Get Hands On. Work and field placements, industry projects and internships all mean one thing: gaining valuable work experience as part of a postgraduate program. Many of our programs include some form of work experience whether you are working on a project team, solving a problem for an industry/community partner, or doing a short-term work or field placement at a partner site. From the real world to the classroom There s no replacement for real world practice, and many postgraduate programs allow students to gain experience in facilities and labs modeled after real workplaces with state-of-the-art technology. For example, such real-world learning takes place in: The Simulated Practice Centre where students across Health Sciences programs learn in a simulated hospital setting with high fidelity mannequins as patients. Our School of Design, which is set up to mirror the real world agency and studio environments where many of our graduates find employment. Expanding interprofessional health-care learning The construction of the College s new Waterfront campus is well underway. The new facility will be among the first facilities in Canada to be purpose-built for interprofessional health-care learning. The result is a more collaborative educational approach that is aligned with the province s agenda to ensure that Ontarians have access to the right number and mix of qualified health-care givers, with the patient at the centre of care (for more details, see page 11). Elaine Lazzarato Food and Nutrition Management, Graduated Current position: Food and Nutrition Manager, Wellington Nursing and Retirement Home, Hamilton, Ontario Elaine Lazzarato has the unique ability to walk into any commercial kitchen, see problems, and then solve them. I am a fixer, she says. After 22 years as a top producing food and beverage administrator and chef manager, she saw a need for a fix of her own a career change that would get her out of the kitchen and into people s lives. The 10-month Food and Nutrition Management program gave her the specific skills she needed to transfer her 20 years of experience in the food and beverage industry to the health-care field. The best part of her job now is the one-on-one relationships she gets to build with her elderly and infirm clients. My experience as a student was unbelievable. Not only was it educational, but it also opened doors to new areas of my industry. georgebrown.ca 3

6 Kai Exos Design Management, Graduated Current position: Chief Creative Officer, Spoke Agency, Toronto, Ontario Kai Exos entered George Brown as a mature student having run his own ad agency in Miami. He needed an entrée into the Canadian advertising industry and was drawn to the Design Management program because it offered a desired focus on project management and integrative thinking. He also liked the fact that professors and guest mentors were business leaders who understood strategic design from years of lived experience. Now as the Chief Creative Officer of his own integrated ad agency, Kai employs the lessons he learned at George Brown to create branded content for the likes of Disney and Nestlé Nespresso. To collaborate alongside incredibly talented people who believe in what they re doing every day is more than I could ve ever asked for. Practice by doing the actual job From teeth cleanings and oral health assessments to child care and gourmet meals, the following facilities are both sites of applied learning and open to paying customers: The Chefs House restaurant, where students prepare and serve the latest in culinary trends. The Interprofessional Learning Clinic, which allows students to hone their skills by providing clients with services such as teeth cleaning, fitness and hearing tests. The School of Early Childhood operates nine lab school child care centres throughout Toronto that give our students real world experience. 4 georgebrown.ca

Robin Paul International Student, Wireless Networking, Graduated Current position: Client Services Representative, Data Impeccable, Toronto, Ontario Robin Paul started his career in India, working as a telephone technical support agent for American users of Hewlett Packard products. Wanting to advance in his career, he applied to George Brown s Wireless Networking program as an international student. The program offered focused learning at the right cost and within a manageable timeframe. It also helped that Toronto was a city that he could see himself living in afterwards. Now, three years later, he is resolving much more complex IT problems but instead of doing so over the phone, he does so in person in the heart of Toronto s financial district. All of the learning was projectbased. Instead of traditional classrooms, we were taught in industry standard laboratories and we worked in teams as you would in the real world. georgebrown.ca 5
