2 START THE YEAR OFF RIGHT It s the perfect time to get your child into a fantastic habit that will help them throughout her entire life: Having good attendance. Attending school regularly is the best way for your child to do well they can t learn if they are not there! Get your child to school on time each day. Make sure they get enough sleep at night. Help them get organized for school the night before. Don t schedule vacations or appointments during school hours. Teach your child by example It s a beautiful afternoon. Your child wants to go to the park. But you have some chores to do. This is a teachable moment an opportunity to show your child values. Be a role model. Say, I d love to play at the park, too. But we all have responsibilities. Mom hs to go shopping and I need your help. While in the store seek their advice as to where the milk is which type of peanut butter to purchase, etc. Learn the key to discipline Experts say that a key to discipline is being firm, fair and consistent. Mean what you say. Make fair rules. Apply the consistently. It s tempting to bend rules when children beg. But sticking to your beliefs can build your child s respect. Give the right kind of homefun help this year Helping your child with homefun is important. Make sure you re helping them in the right way (this doesn t mean doing it for them). Here s how: Make sure they understand the assignments. Review homefun every day. Sign it if required. Look over assignments that the teacher has corrected. And check their backpacks every night! NUMBER 1 RULE FOR ALL PARENTS: Check your child s backpack every night! Remove and review Homefun & notes, sign as necessary... Success For Every Child! Fabulous l 4 News, October 2013, page 2

3 From the Desk of the School Nurse Important Health Information Concerning School, Flu & You New strains of the influenza (flu) virus continue to make many people sick around the world. We continue to need your help to keep our students and staff healthy. The best way to protect people from the flu and other illnesses is to keep sick people away from healthy people. If your child or children are sick, they should be kept home from school. Staying home when sick stops the spread of flu and other illnesses and helps the sick person get well. Please check your child every morning before sending him or her to school. If your child has: Fever (100 F or 37.8 C) AND either a sore throat or cough Then: Keep your child home from school and child care for 7 days or 24 hours after their fever is gone (once they have stopped taking fever-reducing medicine) which ever is longer. Your child may have the flu. Medicines that contain acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin) can reduce fever and relieve pain. As the sick person begins to feel better you may decide to stop giving them feverreducing medicines. Continue to monitor their temperature until it has been normal (98.7 F or 37 C) for 24 hours. Aspirin should NOT be given to children or teenagers with the flu as this can cause a rare but serious illness called Reye s syndrome. If your child has other symptoms: Fever alone, OR Vomiting or diarrhea, OR Sore throat or new cough with no fever Then: Keep your child home from school and childcare until fever and non-fever symptoms are gone for 24 hours. If fever is present, follow guidance in box above. Please make sure you have arrangements in place to have your child picked up PROMPTLY if your child becomes ill at school. We know that keeping a child home can be disruptive to work and activity schedules, so Plan now to assure that your child is safe at home and has care when they are sick. Do not send them to another childcare setting where they could get others sick. They should not go to a community setting (shopping centers, malls, restaurants, movies, etc.). They should not visit with friends or attend sporting events or other extra-curricular activities. H1N1 and Seasonal flu are serious illnesses. Guidance may change depending on the severity and amount of flu cases that develop. We will keep you informed as new information becomes available. Thank you for your attention to this serious matter and for helping us to keep our schools as healthy as possible for all students and staff. Success For Every Child!
