2 Course Descriptions HECSAS Microsoft Word 2007 Level 1 In this course, students learn to create, navigate, and organize documents and use the help functions. They learn to edit and manipulate text, view and format documents, and use Word s predefined functions. Students use the Find and Replace feature, use proofing and language tools, create, format and modify tables, work with hyperlinks and cross references, and learn how to preview and print a document. Students accomplish the learning objectives for each lesson through a series of hands on tasks, for which they are given step by step instructions and desired result checkpoints. The tasks provide ample opportunity for students to practice, apply, and develop the skills covered in the course. A practice exercise and review questions are included at the end of each lesson to measure progress and reinforce the skills learned. There is also a lab exercise at the end of the course to provide further practice and review to reinforce the topics learned throughout the course, and to help prepare students for the exam. HECSAS Microsoft Word 2007 Level 2 This course teaches students intermediate to advanced level concepts and features of the Microsoft Word 2007 application. In this course, students learn to customize Word and build upon the basic skills learned in the Word 2007 Level 1 course. They learn how to increase their productivity and enhance their documents using some of Microsoft Word s intermediate to advanced level features. They will be given ample opportunity to explore and practice these techniques throughout the course. Students accomplish the learning objectives for each lesson through a series of hands on tasks, for which they are given step by step instructions and desired result checkpoints. The tasks provide ample opportunity for students to practice, apply, and develop the Word skills covered in the lesson. A practice exercise and review questions are included at the end of each lesson to measure progress and enforce the skills learned. There is also a lab exercise at the end of the course to provide further practice and review, to reinforce the topics learned throughout the course, and to help prepare students for the final exam. HECSAS Microsoft Word 2007 Level 3 This course teaches students advanced level concepts and features of the Microsoft Word 2007 application. In this course, students learn to use mail merge, and work with fields, macros, large documents, and forms. They learn to merge form letters, s, envelopes, and labels using a data source. Students work with fields and macros, and learn to use features that facilitate working with large documents, including generating an index, table of contents, and tables of figures and authorities. They also learn to create forms using form fields such as drop down lists and check boxes. Students accomplish the learning objectives for each lesson through a series of hands on tasks, for which they are given step by step instructions and desired result checkpoints. The tasks provide ample opportunity for students to practice, apply, and develop the Word skills covered in the lesson. A practice exercise and review questions are included at the end of each of the six lessons to measure progress and enforce the skills learned. There is also a lab exercise at the end of the course to provide further practice and review, to reinforce the topics learned throughout the course, and to help prepare students for the final exam.
3 HECSAS Microsoft Excel 2007 Level 1 This course teaches students to create and manage worksheets and workbook files; enter data and create basic formulas to perform calculations. They learn to edit and manipulate cell content, modify worksheet structure, view and format worksheets, and use Excel s predefined functions. Students use the Find and Replace feature, use themes to format workbooks and practice preparing, previewing, and printing worksheets. Students accomplish the learning objectives for each lesson through a series of hands on tasks, for which they are given step by step instructions and desired result checkpoints. The tasks provide ample opportunity for students to practice, apply, and develop the skills covered in the course. HECSAS Microsoft Excel 2007 Level 2 This course teaches students intermediate to advanced level concepts and features of the Microsoft Excel 2007 application. In this course, students learn to customize Microsoft Excel and streamline workflow by building upon the basic skills learned in the Microsoft Excel 2007 Level 1 course. They learn to use named references, validate and consolidate data, use links and hyperlinks, and reference external data. Students learn to use cell comments, custom and conditional formatting, styles, and templates. They also practice working with graphics, charts, diagrams, and databases (lists). HECSAS Microsoft Outlook 2007 Level 1 This course teaches students how to use both the e mail program and the personal information manager components of Microsoft Outlook. The skills learned in this course will help students use Microsoft Outlook effectively both at work and in your personal life. Students accomplish the learning objectives for each lesson through a series of hands on tasks, for which they are given step by step instructions and desired result checkpoints. The tasks provide ample opportunity for students to practice, apply, and develop the skills covered in the course. A practice exercise and review questions are included at the end of each lesson to measure progress and reinforce the skills learned. There is also a lab exercise at the end of the course to provide further practice and review to reinforce the topics learned throughout the course, and to help prepare students for the exam. HECSAS Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 Level 1 This course teaches students the fundamentals of this application and its usage within the Windows environment. Students learn to create, modify, and deliver electronic presentations. They learn to create slides containing text, tables, charts, diagrams, and graphics. Students practice customizing slides and finalizing presentations, and then learn to print and deliver slide shows. Students accomplish the learning objectives for each lesson through a series of hands on tasks, for which they are given step bystep instructions and desired result checkpoints. The tasks provide ample opportunity for students to practice, apply, and develop the Microsoft PowerPoint skills covered in the lesson. A practice exercise and review questions are included at the end of each lesson to measure progress and reinforce the skills learned. There is also a lab exercise at the end of the course to provide further practice and review, to reinforce the topics learned throughout the course, and to help prepare students for the final exam.
4 HECSAS Business Correspondence Level 1 This course places emphasis on the acquisition of skills and style mechanics needed to produce personal and office correspondence. The parts of a business letter are examined in detail, as are the guidelines for organizing and writing a letter. Students will learn how to write neutral and inquiry letters, as well as positive and negative letters. Proper punctuation and word usage skills are also addressed. The latter part of the course deals with creating envelopes and labels using Microsoft Word, as well as writing and managing e mail using Microsoft Outlook. Writing and creating memos, fax cover sheets, and forms using Microsoft Word templates are also covered. HECSAS Business Correspondence Level 2 This course places emphasis on editing and proofreading business letters covered in Level 1, as well as additional documents required in business. This course is designed specifically for the correspondence required in a corporate environment. Students will learn how to create form letters using Microsoft Word s Mail Merge Wizard, how to prepare, organize and write a report using various report styles and supplementary parts, how to prepare proposals and quotations using boilerplates, how to plan meetings and prepare agendas for various types of meetings, and how to take and prepare minutes at a meeting. The course is designed so that tasks can be completed using a PC or directly in the workbook. A PC will be used to complete the final exam. HECSAS Customer Service This course teaches students the fundamentals of customer service, and help them to develop core competencies for providing excellent customer service. Students learn the definition of customer service, who their customers are, and how to be customer service oriented through description and examples. They learn tips for managing time and stress, communicating effectively with customers, and managing customer relationships. The course highlights being prepared, and dealing professionally with customer conflicts and complaints. It identifies common customer service pitfalls and explains how to avoid making them. It also emphasizes the importance of gathering and responding to customer feedback, and maintaining a professional image. Students are given ample opportunity to practice, apply and develop their customer service skills through the completion of hands on tasks. The tasks focus on identifying good and bad customer service techniques, by analyzing and responding to various customer service scenarios. HECSAS Office Procedures Level 1 This course will assist students in learning and practicing important office procedures, such as basic banking, records management, postal and courier services, telephone and fax services, dealing with the public, and using the Internet to research information. This course consists of six Lessons and a Final Exam. Each Lesson is divided into Sections with related Tasks. There are questions at the end of each Lesson designed to reinforce the concepts the student has learned in the Lesson.
5 HECSAS Office Procedures Level 2 This course covers a variety of topics as it simulates an office environment and challenges students with tasks that they would typically perform. Students develop an understanding of the various levels of management and associated responsibilities. They also learn about the various forms used in an office and how to complete these forms. A section on organizing workspace, planning work activities, and using a scheduling system to plan events is included. Students also learn about reprographics, preparing for a meeting, procedures to follow in a meeting, and requirements when making travel arrangements. This course consists of six Lessons and a Final Exam. Each Lesson is divided into Sections with related Tasks. There are questions at the end of each Lesson designed to reinforce the concepts the student has learned in the Lesson. Instructor Bio Matt Scofield (Core Courses Business) Matt is a business technology professional with experience working with start ups, mid size and Fortune 500 companies. He has worked as a Business Analyst, Consultant, e Commerce Manager, and Communications Technology Director for these firms and others. For almost ten years Matt has worked with the Microsoft Office suite, including installation, training, and troubleshooting, and is an expert working with the software. Matt is also practiced in providing support to small business owners using the QuickBooks software to manage their operations. He was trained directly by and worked for Intuit, the maker of the software, in addition to academic training in the accounting field. Matt has been an instructor in the business & technology fields for over 7 years and greatly enjoys having helped hundreds of students be successful in new careers.
