2 2 Details PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS) and the Ohio Hospital Association (OHA) are hosting a one-day conference to demonstrate how to break down barriers that psychiatric inpatient providers face daily with the population they serve. Once these barriers are overcome, providers can truly focus on providing holistic care to their patient population. An exciting day of presentations is planned, including a practical and informative message from Dr. Kendall Stewart, keynote speaker, related to Managing Average People. He will distribute several copies of his book, A Portable Mentor for Organizational Leaders, as door prizes at the conference. Justice Evelyn Lundberg Stratton will highlight the luncheon hour with her presentation on The Criminal Justice and Mental Health Systems: Solutions to Stopping the Revolving Door. OBJECTIVE: To address obstacles and challenges in a proactive way that providers face on an ongoing basis and to suggest practical ways to overcome these. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Identify barriers to providing holistic care to the mental health and AoD population Acquire practical information to bust barriers that providers can utilize in their health care settings to promote change. PRESENTER BIOS: Keynote Speaker: Kendall L. Stewart, M.D., MBA, DFAPA Dr. Stewart is the Chief Medical Officer of Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, Ohio, and the Chairman and CEO of SOMC Medical Care Foundation, Inc., a multispecialty physician practice. A psychiatrist who still practices part-time, Dr. Stewart is a past president of the Ohio Psychiatric Physicians Association, a former chair of the Ohio Partnership for Excellence and a former Baldrige examiner. He received his M.D. and completed his psychiatric residency at the Medical College of Georgia, a part of Georgia Health Sciences University. He earned his MBA at Ohio University. Lunch Presentation: Evelyn Lundberg Stratton Evelyn Lundberg Stratton retired from the Supreme Court of Ohio after 23 years in the judiciary to pursue criminal justice reforms, particularly as they relate to mental health, juveniles, and veterans. She believes that the courts, in partnership with the mental health system, can affect positive change in the lives of many defendants whose mental illness has led to criminal activity. To that end, she formed the Supreme Court of Ohio Advisory Committee on Mental Illness and the Courts, which was composed of mental health, law enforcement and criminal justice professionals who were dedicated to mental health initiatives in the court system. That committee has now merged into the Attorney General Task Force on Mental Illness and Criminal Justice, and she still serves as co-chair along with Attorney General Mike DeWine. Nationally, Stratton is a co-founder and former co-chair of the Judges Leadership Initiative, a professional association that supports cooperative mental health programs in the criminal justice system. Her latest focus in Ohio and nationally is on establishing veterans courts to help those returning veterans with post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury and other issues, which may lead to involvement in the criminal justice system.
