1 MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF NURSING 1 NUR 491 Section 602 A History of Nursing in the United States Course Syllabus COURSE OVERVIEW The purpose of this course is to increase the student s understanding and knowledge of the development of professional nursing education and practice from its inception in the United States. Skill in reading historical documents and identifying specific concepts relative to nursing history will be developed. Historical research as a valid means of scholarly inquiry will be explored. COURSE OBJECTIVES At the completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Identify the major historical strands which have contributed to the development of nursing practice and education in the United States. 2. Critique an example of published nursing historiography. 3. Develop and utilize bibliographical resources which are historically appropriate. 4. Thoroughly explore one historical theme relevant to the development of American nursing history. COURSE CREDIT Two (2) semester credits are earned in this course with a (2-0) distribution. Class will be held each Tuesday from 5-6:50 p.m. in A-131Life Sciences. COURSE FORMAT This course is taught in a seminar format with limited time allotted to didactic presentations. Student participation is expected. Reading and viewing of assigned materials prior to class is expected in order to facilitate student understanding and class discussion. 2 2 STUDENT ENROLLMENT Enrollment is open to students in the nursing major, students in the degree completion tract, and graduate nursing students. Others may enroll with permission of the instructor. REQUIRED TEXT Kalisch, P. & Kalisch B. (2003). American nursing: A history. (4 th Ed.). Philadelphia: Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins Course Syllabus available on the web. EVALUATION CRITERIA Student evaluation in this course will be based on the following components: Biographical/Event Presentation 20% Research Critique 10% Quizzes 20% Group Presentation 25% Directed Journals and Timeline Development 25% 100% Grade determination will be on the following scale: % % % % % % % % 0.0 COMMUNUCATION DEVICES All communication devices are to be turned off while in class.

3 CLASS CANCELLATION In case of inclement weather conditions, class will be cancelled if the university experiences a general closure. Listen to local radio and television for advisories. 3 INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP PRESENTATIONS Each student is expected to prepare presentations during the course of the semester. The length of the presentation is to be approximately minutes. Visual materials will greatly enhance the quality of the presentation. Students may use power point, overheads, slides or videos. The topics will be assigned during the first two weeks of class. For each presentation, a reference list should be developed. At least 3 references are to be included and should be submitted in APA format to the instructor at the time of the presentation. Grading of the presentation will be according to the following criteria: 1. Topic is clearly introduced. 5 points 2. Topic is completely covered. 15 points 3. Implications on the development of nursing in America 50 points is fully explained - i.e.: what relevance and continuing impact did this person/event have? 4. Presenter encourages class interaction. 10 points 5 References submitted reflect APA format, 20 points are specific to the topic and reflect an appropriate review of the literature. QUIZZES Quizzes may be announced or unannounced. Most of the content for quizzes will come from assigned readings. It is expected that students will complete assigned readings prior to class. DIRECTED JOURNALS AND TIMELINE DEVELOPMENT Each student is required to complete a directed journal. Assignments for this journal will be made in class and journals are expected to be handed in during the next class period. At the end of the semester, each student is required to complete a timeline of important events in American nursing. Specific information re: this project will be given in class.
