VISION AND MISSION Vision Statement We strive to be the leading Nursing Department in Southern Africa and to be recognised internationally, by offering nursing programmes that advance freedom, democracy, equity and human dignity as high ideals of humanity through producing competent practitioners, distinguished scholarship, excellence in teaching, learning and assessment, reputable research and innovation and through putting intellectual capital to work. Mission Statement The Nursing Department will pursue its vision by: Striving towards excellence in nursing education, research and community engagement in symbiotic relationship with one another and other health professionals. Developing competent nursing practitioners to meet the diverse and rapidly changing healthcare needs of the South African Society. These practitioners will reflect lifelong learning skills, career management skills, and professional and personal empowerment to be internationally competitive. Conducting reputable and innovative research that is guided by the priority of health-care needs of the South African Society. The scientific knowledge generated by the research process will firstly be integrated in the learning content of the programme and secondly, its utilisation in practice will facilitate evidence-based, best practice. Developing communities through quality nursing education, research and partnerships with the community. Pursuing two niche areas, namely: The under- and postgraduate clinical programmes, enriched by professional nursing science in order to provide for the health-care needs of South Africans. Distinguished scholarship (teaching of research, conducting research and disseminating research findings nationally and internationally). 2. PREFACE The Faculty of Health Sciences is proud to present the programmes that are described in this prospectus. Our guarantee of academic quality lies in the fact that the academics of the University of Johannesburg constantly develop and upgrade every programme. The Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing Sciences also strives to give excellent service to every student. The University of Johannesburg would like to make a significant contribution to the development of all South Africans. Research is constantly being carried out into the most suitable mode of representation for every course. We use multi-mode programme presentation so as to optimise the teaching and learning process in a manner that can be to your advantage. 5 4. EDUCATIONAL APPROACH The Department of Nursing Sciences at the University of Johannesburg follows a multimodal approach to education to meet the needs of every learner. These modes include weekday lectures. Accreditation of programmes All programmes offered at the Department of Nursing Sciences are approved by: South African Nursing Council SAQA HEQC 5. GENERAL INFORMATION All registrations will be done according to relevant academic regulations of the Faculty of Health Sciences. All students will register online. Personal registration will take place where applicable. Registration for all Nursing programmes takes place in January of each year. PLEASE NOTE: No late registrations will be accepted. PROGRAMMES/QUALIFICATIONS BCUR PROGRAMME IN NURSING SCIENCE The BCur qualification from the University of Johannesburg is rated highly, both nationally and internationally and will prepare you for a rewarding career and exciting further studies. CREDITS: 552 NQF LEVEL: 8 Admission requirements A Matriculation Exemption Certificate or a further education certificate (Level 4) is a prerequisite for admission to this course. In addition, candidates must have an M-Score of at least 13 points or an APS Score of 29 with Mathematics or 30 with Mathematical Literacy. Selection procedure A selection formula has been devised to ensure the fair and equitable treatment of all candidates. Either your Grade 11 or Grade 12 marks (national examination) will be used to calculate your selection mark. Your M-Score (old matric) will be calculated and you must attain a score of at least 13 for selection or an APS Score of 29 with Mathematics or 30 with Mathematical Literacy. You will be required to have full exemption or meet the minimum requirements for admission to the Bachelor s Degree on the Umalusi Certificate. The following scale is used for selection purposes. 9 FURTHER NATIONAL CERTIFICATE IN NURSING SCIENCE PHARMACOLOGY FOR NURSES (FNC001) NQF LEVEL: 6 CREDITS: 120 DURATION OF COURSE: One academic year Admission requirements 1. Proof of registration with the SANC as a registered nurse. 2. Minimum of 15 and maximum of 30 students can be accommodated. Curriculum POST-BASIC PHARMACOLOGY FOR NURSES Module 1: Introduction to post basic Pharmacology in nursing (FAR0001) Module 2: Specific Drugs: Part 1 (FAR0001) Module 3: Specific Drugs: Part 2 (FAR0003) Module 4: Specific Drugs: Part 3 (FAR0003) Weekly classes during the academic year on Tuesdays. 10 8 FURTHER NATIONAL HIGHER DIPLOMA ADVANCED MIDWIFERY AND NEONATAL NURSING SCIENCE (FND001) NQF LEVEL: 8 CREDITS: 240 DURATION OF COURSE: Two academic years Admission requirements 1. Proof of registration with the SANC as a nurse and midwife. 2. Minimum of 15 and maximum of 30 students can be accommodated. 3. Students must be employed as a midwife in a maternity ward of an approved hospital. 4. The first 30 students who submit their registration form, registration fee and relevant documentation, and who comply with the admission requirements will be accepted. 5. A signed agreement from the Unit Manager and preceptor for the practical component. Practical Every clinical subject contains a practical component. You are required to perform at least 30 hours of practical service per week in the maternity and/or neonatal unit in the clinic, hospital or unit where you are employed, which is approved by the SANC. 12 10 FURTHER NATIONAL HIGHER DIPLOMA COMMUNITY NURSING SCIENCE (FND006) - BASIC NQF LEVEL: 8 CREDITS: 240 DURATION OF COURSE: Two academic years Admission requirements 1. Proof of registration with the SANC as a registered nurse and midwifery if female and psychiatric nurse if male. 2. Only a minimum of 15 and maximum of 60 students can be accommodated. 3. The first 60 students who submit their registration form, registration fee and all the required documentation, and who comply with the admission requirements will be considered for selection. Proof of registration with the SANC as a nurse. 2. At least one year s experience in an intensive care unit. 3. You must be employed in a SANC accredited intensive care unit. 4. A signed agreement from the Unit Manager and Preceptor for the practical component. 5. A maximum of 30 students can be accommodated. Proof of registration with the SANC as a registered nurse. 2. At least one year s experience in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. 3. You must be employed in an approved Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. 4. A signed agreement from the Unit Manager and Preceptor for the practical component. 5. Minimum of 15 and maximum of 50 students can be accommodated. 6. The first 50 students who submit their application form, registration fee and relevant documentation, and who comply with the admission requirements will be accepted. Proof of registration with the SANC as a registered nurse. 2. Proof of indemnity for patient consultation with Clinical Instructors and Preceptors. 3. At least two years experience as a registered nurse. 4. Proof of current employment in a PHC/OHS or similar setting. 5. A signed document by the Preceptor (with relevant qualifications as a registered PHCN and practising as one) as proof of clinical guidance for the duration of study (2nd year component of the course core modules). 6. Minimum of 15 and maximum of 40 students who comply with all the admission requirements will be accepted.
