2 FACULTY OF HUMANITIES It gives me pleasure to invite you to enrol for one of the qualifications offered in the Faculty of Humanities. The Faculty of Humanities comprises nineteen academic departments, ranging from modern and ancient languages to the social sciences and psychology. The Faculty offers more than twenty undergraduate degree programmes, catering for a wide range of study and career opportunities. Moreover, there is ample choice in each programme, allowing students to tailor the contents of their programmes to suit their interests and needs. The modules in each programme contain information, analyses and theories that are relevant, up to date and of the highest academic standard. Academic departments offer postgraduate programmes up to doctoral level. Intellectually, the faculty is vibrant, with a strong research output, numerous public seminars, and a healthy tradition of debate. Students are encouraged to question and explore, and to interrogate knowledge paradigms rather than simply accept them. A principal objective of the faculty is to produce graduates capable of advanced analytical and critical thinking skills, independent and progressive thinking, allowing them to access and contribute towards all forms of human knowledge, and to make dynamic interventions in their chosen professions. 4 UNIVERSITY OF JOHANNESBURG RULES AND REGULATIONS 1. To be able to gain access to a faculty and specific programmes, applicants are required to have the appropriate combination of recognized NSC as well as certain levels of achievement in these. 2. Minimum entry requirements for studies as legislated by the government do not guarantee a learner admission to any programme or field of study. 3. Preliminary admission is based on the results obtained in the final Grade 11 examination. Final admission is based on the final Grade 12 results. 4. Note that individual faculties may have different criteria. Applicants should meet all the criteria set by their chosen faculty with regard to subject choices and entry requirements. APS SCALE OF ACHIEVEMENTS PERCENTAGE % % % % % % % 5. It may also be expected of applicants to write an admission/placement test. 6. The University of Johannesburg and its faculties have the right to change the requirements of a specific field of study. A restricted number of students are accepted in certain fields of study. In addition to the general minimum admission requirements, programme specific entry requirements may apply. Life Orientation must be divided by 2 in the calculation of the APS rating 3

21 Payment of SL bursaries to students The bursaries are paid directly into the student accounts thereby crediting any debit balance. The final credit balance may be refunded to the students. For this students must complete an Application for Refund Form which is available from the Student Finances or the Cashiers. UJ MASTER S AND DOCTAL MERIT AWARDS Values of merit bursaries UJ Merit bursary Students with average marks R6,500 (Master s full-time or part-time) between 70-75% in their previous degree R9,000 (Doctoral full-time or part-time) Students with average marks above R8,000 (Master s full-time or part-time) 75% in their previous degree R10,500 (Doctoral full-time or part-time) Application process for merit bursaries Students apply by completing an application form which is available at the following points on each campus: APB A1 Green Outside Bursary Office or A-ring 322 DFC Admin building, Room 169 SWC Admin block, Room 111 The completed application forms must be submitted in the boxes placed at the same points as indicated in the table above. The deadline for submission of applications by students is 15 October. Students can apply anytime during the year. 20
