Days and Time Class Meets: Friday AF1 8:30 to 10:30 in R Friday AF2 12:30 to 2:30 in R Catalog Course Description: This course is an exploration of leadership and management principles and current issues applicable to the role of the nurse as a provider of care, coordinator of care, and member of the profession. It will include application of knowledge, judgment, skill, and professional values within legal/ethical framework. 5. rogram Learning Outcomes: 0. 6 8. Course Delivery, Evaluation Methods, Grading Criteria and rocedures: A. Delivery: This course will be delivered via face-to-face and a portion distance learning. It will enable the students to complete academic work in a flexible manner. DVD/videos, textbooks, articles, and access to an online course platform will be made available to each student. Online assignments include discussion questions (accomplished through a threaded discussion forum), collaborative group activity and individual assignments. B. Method of Evaluation: Students grades will be based in the following ways: 1. Discussion Forum/Reflection: 5 % of Final Grade The online discussion forum provides opportunity collaboration and dialogue with other students. Each discussion consists of the following: related topics as per syllabus outcome of collaborative group activity discussion forum activity in which students are asked to interact with each other and/or with members of the group to brainstorm ideas. Note: For online discussion forum, you will be directed to: - post your thoughts/insights/ideas for other students to consider - read student s comments/postings - respond to at least two number of postings from other students - reflect your own posting and other students postings - see grading criteria for online discussions under course homepage Netiquette for Online Discussions: a. Acknowledge other students' comments/postings, even when you disagree, and always provide clear, logical and reflective insights for your views. b. Respect the rights of other students to participate in ways which are free from harassment and intimidation. Flaming (comments intended to abuse or insult) and personal abuse are entirely inappropriate. c. Always assume good intent and respond accordingly. If you are unsure of or annoyed by a message, wait 24 hours before responding. d. When posting a message choose your words carefully to communicate what you intend. Don t assume that others will interpret your message in the same way that you do. Try to re-word your message if you think there is a chance that others will misunderstand your message and be offended by it. e. Avoid typing in all capitals because it is difficult to read and is considered the electronic version of shouting. f. Avoid the use of emoticons when posting comments. Emoticons are textual expressions representing the face of a writer's mood or facial expression. f. Give your postings and replies to postings meaningful Subject titles related to what you are saying so as to assist others to locate and read your messages. g. Quote the relevant message or excerpt when responding. This will help other students see which point you are responding to in a complex multi-level discussion thread. h. If you include an attachment to your message please ensure that it is free of any viruses before posting it. 6
7 2. Collaborative Group Activity: This group activity will be given during the class. See grading criteria for collaborative work activity under course homepage 3. Unit Exams: 20 % of Final Grade There are two scheduled unit exams for the course. 4. Quizzes: 5 % of Final Grade There are scheduled quizzes for every topic and will be available online from (AM Class: 10:30 to 1:30 M) (M Class: 2:30 to 5:30 M) in the ASSESSMENT link on the home page. You will only have one chance to log on and take the exam. Quizzes are timed and NO SECOND ATTEMTS will be allowed under any circumstances. 5. NCLEX reparation: 50 % of Final Grade This component of the course will reinforce and complement prior knowledge gained in the nursing curriculum. It will be a self-directed learning with the use of blackboard learning to access different exams. Students will utilize the nursing process and critical thinking skills to review previously learned nursing concepts. Completion of this portion will assist students to further prepare for NCLEX-RN Examination. NOTE: All students will: do a minimum of 100 NCLEX review questions per assigned topic. (See outline) select the questions from a computerized NCLEX review program such as Davis Q & A, Mosby, Saunders, or NCLEX EVOLVE Student Review for NCLEX questions CD will also be acceptable. o Be sure to choose a review program that gives a printed evaluation of your performance. o Take the test without using your text books or any references. o After completing the test, print your score/result. Highlight the topic and score and submit the print out result to the instructor. be required to score equal to or greater than 85% on 100-item practice question tests as passing grade. To calculate this portion of your grade to your final grade: o Weekly Assignments Average =10% o Exit Exam 1 Conversion Score + Exit Exam 2 Conversion Score = Average = 90% 6. Final Exam: 20 % of Final Grade 7
8 FACULTY FEEDBACK SCEHDULE: Written assignments will be returned within working seven days following the due date. Responses to , texts and voic queries will be made within 48 hours. C. Grading Criteria: Your final grade will depend on the following criteria: Units Test = 20% Final Exam = 20% NCLEX reparation = 50% Group Activity/Discussion Forum = 5% Quizzes = 5% Grade Scale: At the end of the course, students will earn a grade based on the following scale: LETTER GRADE OINTS EARNED A % B 83-89% C 75-82% D 65-74% F 64% and BELOW Student must achieve a grade of 75.0 or better in the course. The numerical equivalent is rounded off at 0.5 or above for grades of 75 only. For example, 89.5 would become 90, and 92.2 would become 92; 74.5 remains 74. rogram rogression: Student must have a 75% course average for RNSG 2121, RNSG 2331 and have successfully completed clinical RNSG 2163 to progress to the RNSG rocedures: Discussions: Your active participation in the discussions and timely completion of assignments are critical to the success of this course. Delivery of Assignments: Assignments (including NCLEX requirements) are to be submitted at the end of each class. Late Assignment olicies: It is imperative that assignments and discussion forum postings are submitted by the time and date specified. In extenuating circumstances, the faculty may agree to accept a late assignment with a late course work form that is available in the home page under handout. In the event that a late assignment is accepted, the faculty will impose ten (10) points deducted for each day late. Assignments more than one week late are not accepted. Quizzes and discussion forum postings are not to be made up. oints will be deducted for missed postings. 8

Other Requirements: Student Handbook: Students must review the Student Handbook and sign the attached sheet stating they have read the attendance, cheating, professional appearance, and Statement Regarding Board Regulation for License Eligibility; Article 4519 a and 4525 policy. Eligibility for State Board Exam: Students must review attendance, eligibility for exam make-up, Statement Regarding Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas Regulation Eligibility for Licensure: Sec & Sec in the STC Nursing Student Handbook, (on line at Students must sign the attached form confirming understanding and acceptance of the policies in both documents. Academic Honesty and lagiarism: Academic integrity is the pursuit of scholarly activity free from fraud and deception and is an educational objective of South Texas College and the Nursing/Allied Health Division. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, cheating, plagiarizing, fabricating information or citations, facilitating acts of dishonesty by others, having unauthorized possession of examinations, submitting work of another person or work previously used without informing the instructor, or tampering with the academic work of other students. Individuals found guilty of academic dishonesty may receive a failing grade for the assignment and/or course as per instructor decision. It is the student's responsibility to have a clear understanding of the various aspects of academic dishonesty. lagiarisms and other forms of scholastic dishonesty are serious academic violations that will not be tolerated. Scholastic dishonesty encompasses, but is not limited to, cheating, plagiarism, collusion, and any act designed to give an unfair academic advantage to the student. Cheating includes, but is not limited to * copying from another student s work; * using materials not authorized by a testing proctor; * possessing materials that are not authorized by a testing proctor, such as lessons, books, or notes; * knowingly using or soliciting, in whole or part, the contents of an non-administered test; * collaborating with or seeking aid from another student without authorization during the test; * substituting for another person, or permitting another person to substitute for oneself, in taking a course test or completing any course-related assignment; lagiarism includes, but is not limited to, the appropriation, buying, receiving as a gift, or obtaining by any means someone else s work and then submitting that work for credit as if it were one s own. Collusion includes, but is not limited to, unauthorized collaboration with another person in the preparation of an academic assignment offered for credit. The penalties for scholastic dishonesty in graded assignments include the possibility of failure in the course. Scholastic dishonesty in examinations will result in a grade of F on the examination and an F in the course.
