9 Chapter 2: VMware monitoring (vmware) Overview v6.2 Business based on Virtualization Technology depends on a high degree of quality and availability. In such situations, the availability and performance of the VMware hosts and virtual machines must be as high as possible. Monitoring and managing the components and services can help you ensure optimal performance. The VMware monitoring probe automates all common monitoring and data collection tasks, and lets you focus on problems as they arise. The VMware monitoring probe collects and stores data and information from the monitored components through VMware Virtual Center (vcenter), or by connecting to ESX servers directly, at customizable intervals. You can define alarms to be generated when specified thresholds are breached or when the service is unavailable. This section contains the following topics: About This Guide (see page 9) Related Documentation (see page 9) Release Summary (see page 10) Requirements (see page 10) About This Guide This guide is for the CA Unified Infrastructure Management Administrator to help understand the configuration of the VMware monitoring probe. Related Documentation For related information that may be of interest, see the following material: Related Documentation Documentation for other versions of the vmware probe The Release Notes for the vmware probe User documentation for the Admin Console Monitor Metrics Reference Information for CA Unified Infrastructure Management Probes ( Chapter 2: VMware monitoring (vmware) Overview v6.2 9

11 Chapter 3: Configuration for VMware monitoring (vmware) v6.2 This section contains configuration details specific to the VMware monitoring probe. This section contains the following topics: Configuration Overview (see page 11) Create Resource Profiles (see page 11) Configure Alarms, Events, and Monitors (see page 12) How to Configure Alarm Thresholds (see page 13) Optional Tasks (see page 13) Configuration Overview At a high level, configuring the VMware monitoring probe consists of two steps: 1. Add a Resource profile for each VMware vcenter or ESX server you want to monitor. 2. Configure QoS measurements, alarms, and events for the components of the Resource. Optional tasks include: Setting the level of logging detail The following sections describe how to do each of these tasks. Create Resource Profiles A Resource profile contains the settings needed for the VMware monitoring probe to connect to a VMware vcenter or ESX server. Create a profile for each vcenter or ESX server you want to monitor. Once you create a Resource profile, the Resource is added to the tree and the tree hierarchy is automatically populated with the Resource components. Follow these steps: 1. Click the Options icon next to the vmware node in the tree. 2. Click the Add New Profile option. Chapter 3: Configuration for VMware monitoring (vmware) v6.2 11

12 Configure Alarms, Events, and Monitors 3. Update the field information: Hostname: The hostname or IP address of the vcenter or ESX server system to monitor. Active: Select this checkbox to activate or deactivate monitoring of the Resource. Port: The port number for the vcenter or ESX server REST API environment. Default is Interval (secs): How often, in seconds, the probe checks the values of the monitors. The vcenter or ESX server system data is updated once per minute. We recommend polling once every 10 minutes. The polling interval should not be smaller than the time required to collect the data. Username: Username and domain name to be used by the probe to log on to the vcenter or ESX server environment. Password: Password to be used by the probe to log on to the vcenter or ESX server environment. Alarm Message: Select the alarm message to be sent if the Resource does not respond. 4. Click Submit. The profile is created and appears in the tree. Configure Alarms, Events, and Monitors Once a Resource profile is added, the components of the Resource are displayed in the tree. Click a node in the tree to see the alarms, events, or monitors available for that component. Configure the QoS measurements you want to collect data for, and any alarms or events you want, by modifying the appropriate fields. For a description of the fields, see: Monitor Settings (see page 19) Alarm Settings (see page 18) Event Settings (see page 19) 12 Probe Guide for VMware monitoring

13 How to Configure Alarm Thresholds How to Configure Alarm Thresholds Some Quality of Service measurement probes allow you to set different types of alarm thresholds. These threshold options allow you to more broadly control when alarm messages are sent for each QoS probe. For more information about the different alarm thresholds and their configuration requirements, refer to the General Probe Configuration section of the Admin Console Help. Optional Tasks This section describes how to do optional tasks. Set the Logging Level You can set the level of details written to the log file for the probe. The logging levels are a sliding scale, with the level of information logged ranging from fatal errors only (0) to extremely detailed information used for debugging (5). Log as little as possible during normal operation to minimize disk consumption. Navigation: vmware > Probe Configuration Follow these steps: 1. Enter the desired logging level in the Log Level field. 2. Click Save. Chapter 3: Configuration for VMware monitoring (vmware) v6.2 13
