This node does not contain any field or section and is used for classifying the exclude and monitoring profiles. The Exclude node is used to create a profile for excluding the events from monitoring by the probe. This node does not contain any field or section, but contains only child nodes where each child node defines a different exclude profile. The exclude profile name node is used to define the event selection criteria. The NT Event Log Monitor probe excludes the matching events from monitoring. Note: This node is named as the exclude profile name throughout this document as the host name is user-configurable. Navigation: ntevl > host name > Exclude > exclude profile name Set or modify the following values that are based on your requirement: exclude profile name > Event Selection Criteria This section lets you configure the event properties for filtering those events from the probe monitoring. Log: specifies the log file from which the probe excludes the events from monitoring. The event log files, which are selected in the ntevl node are displayed here. Selecting the * runs the profile on all event logs. Computer: defines the computer name on which the event has occurred. Source/Publisher: defines the source or the publisher from where the event has logged. Severity: specifies the severity of the event. User: defines the Windows user account for whom the event was generated. Category: defines the event category. Chapter 2: Configuration Details 11

ntevl Node Event ID: defines the unique identification number of the event. Message String: defines the message text of the event. You can use the regular expressions for matching the message string. The events matching the given criteria are excluded from the monitoring profile of the probe. Profiles Node The Profiles node is used to create a monitoring profile for generating alarms and QoS for the events that are matching the monitoring criteria. This node does not contain any field or section, but it contains only child nodes where each child node defines a different monitoring profile. <Profile Name> Node The profile name node is used for defining the monitoring criteria of the events. This monitoring criterion generates the alarms and QoS for the NT Event Log Monitor probe. The monitoring profile caters the monitoring requirements and alerts the user when something unexpected happens. Note: This node is named as the profile name throughout this document as the profile name is user-configurable. Navigation: ntevl > host name > Profiles > profile name Set or modify the following values that are based on your requirement: profile name > Event Selection This section is used to configure the event properties for filtering those events from the probe monitoring. No Propagation of Events: excludes an event that is matching the selection criteria of one monitoring profile, is made unavailable for the other profiles. Default: Not Selected Log: specifies the log file from which the probe monitors the event. The event log files, which are selected in the ntevl node are displayed here. Selecting the * runs the profile on all event logs. Computer: defines the computer name on which the event has occurred. 12 Probe Guide for NT Event Log Monitor

ntevl Node Source/Publisher: defines the source or the publisher from where the event has logged. Severity: specifies the severity of the event. Note: The audit success and audit failure severity options are applicable only for Windows earlier than Vista and Microsoft has moved these options to the keyword field from Windows Vista and 2007 onwards. Use * for monitoring all event of the select log file. Note: The Event ID field does not support regular expressions. Message String: defines the alarm message text when the event selection criteria matches an event. Run Command on Match: lets you run a command when the matching event is found. Default: Not Selected Command Executable: defines the executable command when the matching event is found. You can also use the browse option and attach a batch file. Command Arguments: defines the command arguments for executing the command. profile name > QoS This section is used to configure the QoS messages for the NT Event Log Monitor probe. Publishing Data: enables the profile for generating the QoS messages. Time Interval (in seconds): defines the time interval for monitoring the events and generating alarms and QoS. Chapter 2: Configuration Details 13

ntevl Node profile name > Alarm This section is used for configuring the alarm message for the monitoring profile. Publishing Alarms: enables the profile for generating the Alarm messages. Alarm Message: defines the alarm message to be issued when the event matches the monitoring criteria. You can use following variables in the message text: $profile: Name of the Profile for which alarm/qos is generated. $description: User-defined description. $variable: User-defined variable. $source: The source from where the event is logged, for example, [Service Control Manager]. $event_id: The ID of the particular event. $category: Category name of the particular event, for example, [Management] and [Disk]. $log: The event log name, for example, [System] and [Application]. $severity: The event Severity level of the event. $severity_str: The severity code name, for example, [error] and [information]. $user: Username of the event. $computer: Host name of the system on which the event is generated. $time_stamp: Date Timestamp when the event is generated. $message: Message description available in the event logger. $record_id: The record number which is assigned to the event when the event is logged. $evldata: The variable $evldata can be used to get the data associated with the event. If no data is present, None is added to the message. Level: specifies the severity of the alarm. Select the From Eventlog option for using the same severity level as the event log message. Note: The critical level is supported on the Windows Server 2008 only. Set Suppression Key: activates the message suppression feature for avoiding multiple instances of the same alarm. Optional Key: defines a suppression key for the alarm messages, which overrides the default key. Time Frame Value: defines the time limit for which the events are monitored. Time Frame Unit: specifies the unit of time frame value. 14 Probe Guide for NT Event Log Monitor

ntevl Node Event Count (Condition): specifies the threshold condition while counting the number of events for generating an alarm, during the specified time frame. Event Count: defines the number of events and generates alarms when this number breaches the threshold limit. Post Message: lets you post an event log message data as the NMS alarm. Post Message Subject: defines the subject of the alarm. This value overrides the default message subject, which is defined in the ntevl node. profile name > Variables This section is used for defining the variables with a set of conditions. These conditions populate the variable value on real time from the selected event log message. These variables are then used for generating the NMS alarm messages. Source Line: lets you define the source line of event message text from where the probe reads the text. The probe saves the extracted text in the variable. Source Line Value: defines the line number of the event log message text. Default: 0 From Character Position: defines the position of the character from where the source line is defined to extract the variable value. Default: 1 Source From Position: lets you the select one of the following options: Column: defines the position of the column in the source line for extracting value of the variable. Character Position: defines the position of the character in the source line for extracting value of the variable. Match Expression: defines the regular expression for extracting value of the variable, whenever the matching text is found in the event log message. Note: You can extract variables from the contents inside parentheses in the match expression. Using number 1, refers to the first parenthesis in the expression, using number 2, refers to the second parenthesis in the expression, and so on. Operator: specifies the threshold operator for generating an alarm. Select the RE option for using the regular expressions. Note: The >, <, >=, and <= operators support only integer and float type values. These operators do not work with string values. Threshold: defines set the threshold value for the variable. For example, set the threshold value for column 0 equal to 10 for generating alarm every time the value in column 0 equals 10. Chapter 2: Configuration Details 15

Configure a Node Configure a Node This procedure provides the information to configure a particular section within a node. Each section within the node lets you configure the properties of the probe for monitoring the network connection. Follow these steps: 1. Navigate to the section within a node that you want to configure. 2. Update the field information and click Save. The specified section of the probe is configured. The probe is now ready to monitor the Windows NT Event logs. Create a Monitoring Profile The NT Event Log Monitor probe defines a monitoring criteria for the selected event logs for generating alarms and QoS. Follow these steps: 1. Click the Options icon next to the Profiles node in the navigation pane. 2. Click the Add New Profile option. 3. Enter necessary information in the Add New Profile dialog and click Submit. The profile is added as a child node under the Profiles node. Click the profile name node and configure the monitoring properties. Similarly, you can create an exclude profile for ignoring the matching events for monitoring. Delete a Monitoring Profile You can delete a monitoring profile and an exclude profile from the NT Event Log Monitor probe, which is no longer required for monitoring. Follow these steps: 1. Click the Options icon next to the profile name node in the navigation pane. 2. Click the Delete Profile option. 3. Click Save. The selected profile is removed from the navigation pane. Alternatively, deactivate a monitoring profile for avoiding a reconfiguration of the profile when the requirement comes again. 16 Probe Guide for NT Event Log Monitor

Configure Locale Specific Severity String Configure Locale Specific Severity String The NT Event Log Monitor probe displays the event severity as Information, when deployed in the non-english environment. This thing happens when the probe is installed on Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 R2 or a later version. The Windows returns event severity string in their specific locales and the probe is not able to compare these values with equivalent English string. You can use the Raw Configure option for configuring the locale-specific severity. Follow these steps: 1. Open the Raw Configure GUI of the NT Event Log Monitor probe. 2. Go to the language_string section. Seven keys are available in this section for configuring the severity value: critical information warning verbose error audit_failure audit_success 3. Define the severity value corresponding to the severity name according to their system locales. For example, if we are using the French locale, then define Erreur for the error key. Important! These seven keys are case-sensitive; therefore the severity string must be exactly same as it is displaying in the event viewer. 4. Click OK and close the Raw Configure GUI. 5. Restart the probe for applying the changes. The probe now displays the appropriate severity of each event. Chapter 2: Configuration Details 17
