7 Chapter 1: IIS Server Monitoring (iis) Overview v1.7 The IIS Server Monitoring iis probe monitors the health and status of Microsoft IIS servers. The probe performs HTTP GET queries to the selected Microsoft IIS servers. These values are then used for generating QoS and alarms. You can use this probe for both local and remote monitoring. Prerequisites The Performance Collector probe version 1.53 or later is required before deploying the IIS Server Monitoring probe. 9 Preconfiguration Requirements Installation Notes You can install the IIS Server Monitoring probe for monitoring the IIS server while considering the following points: Provide admin access to the probe in Admin Console by using the Settings > Probe Security option. Alternatively, use the Security > Probe Administration option in the Infrastructure Manager. Restart the Performance Collector probe after installing or upgrading the IIS Server Monitoring probe. Use the 'localhost' as the hostname for monitoring the local IIS server to skip the performance authentication. Ensure that the remote registry is enabled on the IIS server for remote monitoring. Installation Notes for IISRequest.dll The IISRequest.dll is an ISAPI filter add-on for the IIS server and used by the IIS Server Monitoring probe. This add-on supports several versions of the IIS server and Operating Systems. You can go through the readme.txt file for supported versions and for details about how to add this functionality. The readme.txt is available at Nimsoft Installation Directory > Nimsoft > Applications > iis location. Installing ISAPI filter on a 64-bit OS If the IIS web server is running on a 64-bit version of Windows, the IISRequestNM64.dll or IISRequest64.dll library file is used. You must have the Microsoft Visual C Redistributable Package on the server running IIS (web server, not probe). 10 Preconfiguration Requirements Installing Metabase Compatibility Component on IIS 7 or above The IIS Server Monitoring probe displays a wrong status when monitoring local IIS 7 server. The probe requires the Metabase Compatibility component for displaying correct status which is not available on IIS 7, by default. 11 Chapter 2: Configuration Details This section contains configuration details specific to the IIS Server Monitoring probe. You can configure the probe to monitor the health and performance of the IIS Servers. The IIS Server Monitoring probe performs the HTTP GET queries to the selected Microsoft IIS servers. The probe uses the query result for generating alarms and QoS. In this node, you can view the probe information and can configure the log properties of the IIS Server Monitoring probe. You can also configure the advanced properties of the probe to set maximum summary storage and number of concurrent threads. Navigation: iis Set or modify the following values as required: iis > Probe Information This section provides information about the probe name, probe version, start time of the probe, and the probe vendor. iis > General Configuration This section lets you configure the default log level for the probe. Log Level: specifies the detail level of the log file. Default: 3 - Info Chapter 2: Configuration Details 11

12 iis Node iis > Advanced Configuration This section lets you set the maximum summary storage time and the number of concurrent threads for the probe. Max Summary Storage: specifies the maximum data storage time for local monitoring purpose. This value is the time range within which the monitored values are picked for calculating the average value (used when setting the alarm threshold). This option does not affect the QoS data. Default: 6 hours Maximum Concurrent Threads: specifies the maximum number of profiles the probe can run simultaneously. The valid range is Default: 20 iis > Messages This section lets you view the default alarm messages for the different error conditions. Error: identifies the error message text. You can use variables by typing "$" from the following list: state expected_state name display_name profile_name credential expected_credential restarts OK: identifies the clear message text. Subsystem: identifies a descriptive text name for the subsystem. Host-<Host Name> Node The Host-host name node displays information about the IIS host, which the IIS Server Monitoring probe is monitoring. The Host-host name node is displayed under the iis node. You can view information about the host name and the server address for http response. Note: The host name is user-configurable and is referred to as host-host name in this document. 12 Probe Guide for IIS Server Monitoring

13 iis Node Navigation: iis > Host-host name Set or modify the following values as required: Host-host name > Host Configuration This section lets you view and update details of the IIS host, which the IIS Server Monitoring probe is monitoring. Hostname or IP address: defines the host name or IP address of the system, where the IIS is running. Server Address for Http Response: specifies the address for testing http response. <Host Name> Node Host-host name > Options icon > Delete Host This option allows you to delete this host when you no longer want the probe to monitor it. The host name node represents the IIS host, which the IIS Server Monitoring probe is monitoring. The host name node is displayed under the Host-host name node. You can configure the properties of the host name node to generate alarms when the host does not respond. You can also configure the Windows credentials and http server authentication details. Note: The host name node is user-configurable and referred to as the host name throughout this document. Navigation: iis > Host-host name > host name Set or modify the following values as required: host name > Host Configuration This section lets you configure the host details and test the Windows user credentials. Hostname or IP Address: defines the name or IP address of the IIS server to be monitored. Active: activates the host monitoring. Default: Selected Alarm Message: specifies the alarm message when the host does not respond. Default: MsgAgentError Server address for http response: specifies the address for testing the http response. For example, or Chapter 2: Configuration Details 13

14 iis Node Data Collection Interval (min): specifies the data collection interval which defines how often the probe collects data from the host. Default: 1 Filter Port: defines the port which is used to communicate between the IIS add-on (IISrequest.dll) and the probe. This option is used for monitoring the IIS server remotely. Default: 999 Windows Username: defines a valid user name with administrator privileges for logging in to the monitored host. Windows Password: defines the password for logging in to the monitored host. Windows Domain: defines the DNS domain name for locating the IIS server when it is not hosted on the local system. Leave the field blank, when both IIS and probe are installed on the same system. Http Server Authentication: specifies the authentication type as follows: None: indicates no authentication against the http server (still requires the Windows authentication for performance data). Basic: indicates basic authentication against the http server. The Http Username and Http Password fields values are used for the authentication. Windows: uses the Windows authentication credentials as specified in Windows Username and Windows Password fields. Note: Select the Test Windows Credential option from the Actions drop-down list and verify the values. Http Username: defines a valid user name with administrator privileges of the http server. Http Password: defines the password for logging in to the http server. Application Pool Node The Application Pool node is a group node for displaying all application pools running in an IIS server. This node lets you select more than one application pools for configuring the CPU, Memory, Running State and other related monitoring counters. 14 Probe Guide for IIS Server Monitoring

15 iis Node An application pool lets you run web sites or URL in groups. Each group is a part of different application pool. Each application pool runs in a different worker process of the IIS server where each worker process runs in isolation. This isolation prevents other application pools from going down when one application pool is down. You can also define different security rights for each application pool. <Application Pool Name> Node Navigation: iis > Host-host name > host name > Application Pool Set or modify the following values as required: Application Pool > Available Pools This section lets you select the application pool for monitoring from the Available list, which is then visible in the Selected list. The selected application pools are added under the Application Pool node. The application pool name node represents an actual application pool running in the IIS server and is selected for monitoring in the probe. This node lets you configure the following counters for monitoring: Current Worker Processes: fetches the total number of worker processes that are currently running in the application pool. Recent Worker Process Failures: fetches the total number of times the worker processes for the application pool has failed during the rapid-fail protection interval. Total Worker Process Startup Failures*: fetches the total number of times the Windows Process Activation Service (WAS) has failed to start a worker process. Current Application Pool State: fetches the current status value of the application pool, which can be one of the following values: 1 - Uninitialized 2 - Initialized 3 - Running 4 - Disabling 5 - Disabled 6 - Shutdown Pending 7 - Delete Pending Chapter 2: Configuration Details 15

16 iis Node Application Pool Running: fetches the current running status of the application pool, which can be one of the following values: 1 - Running 0 - Not Running Total Worker Process Failures*: fetches the total number of times the worker processes have crashed after starting the application pool. Total Application Pool Recycles*: fetches the total number of times the application pool is recycled after the WAS is started. Total Worker Process Ping Failures*: fetches the total number of times the WAS has failed to receive a ping response from the worker process. Total Worker Process Shutdown Failures*: fetches the total number of times the WAS has failed to shut down a worker process. Application Pool Memory: fetches the total memory of all the worker processes of the application pool. Application Pool CPU: fetches the total CPU used by all the worker processes of the application pool. Note: The counters marked with an asterisk (*) return the difference between values of the current and last monitoring interval. Navigation: iis > Host-host name > host name > Application Pool > application pool name Set or modify the following values as required: application pool name > Current Worker Process This section lets you configure the counter properties for generating QoS and alarms. QoS Name: identifies the QoS name of the counter. Publish Data: enables the counter for generating QoS. The probe can compute a baseline for setting the dynamic thresholds only when this option is selected. Default: Selected Note: Some counters do not have a QoS name and therefore, are unable to publish data. For such counters, the QoS Name and Publishing Data fields are not visible. Description: identifies a short description of the monitoring object. Class: identifies the counter class. Default: Disabled 16 Probe Guide for IIS Server Monitoring

17 iis Node Value: specifies the counter value, which the probe uses in QoS and for mapping with the threshold value. The available options are Last/Current Sample and Compute Average. Default: Last/Current Sample Compute Average Interval (min): calculates the average of the values as measured in the given time interval. This field is enabled only after selecting the Compute Average option in the Value field. Default: Disabled Alarm Message: specifies the alarm message when the specified threshold value is breached. These messages are kept in the message pool. Default: MsgWarning Note: Similarly, you can configure other counters also. ASP Node The ASP node is used to configure the following counters of the IIS server: Request Bytes In Total Requests Executing Requests Queued Note: The field descriptions for configuring the counter properties are same as described in the application pool name node. IIS Node The IIS node is used to configure the following counters of the IIS server: HTTP Response Time HTTP Response Value IIS Status Value IIS max request time Total Allowed Async I/O Requests URI Cache Flushes URI Cache Hits URI Cache Hits % URI Cache Hits/minute URI Cache Misses Chapter 2: Configuration Details 17

System Node The System node is used to configure the following counters of the IIS server: Available Physical Memory Memory In Use Memory Usage NW Bytes Total/sec Total CPU Total Memory Note: The field descriptions for configuring the counter properties are same as described in the application pool name node. Webservices Node The Webservices node is used to configure the following counters of the IIS server: Bytes Received/sec Bytes Sent/sec Bytes Total/sec Connection Attempts/sec Current Connections Get Requests/sec Measured Async I/O Bandwidth Usage Note: The field descriptions for configuring the counter properties are same as described in the application pool name node. 18 Probe Guide for IIS Server Monitoring

19 Configure a Node Configure a Node This procedure provides the information to configure a particular section within a node. Each section within the node allows you to configure the properties of the probe for monitoring the IIS servers. Follow these steps: 1. Select the appropriate navigation path. 2. Update the field information and click Save. The specified section of the probe is configured. The probe is now ready to monitor IIS server. How to Configure Alarm Thresholds Some Quality of Service measurement probes allow you to set different types of alarm thresholds. These threshold options allow you to more broadly control when alarm messages are sent for each QoS probe. For more information about the different alarm thresholds and their configuration requirements, refer to the General Probe Configuration section of the Admin Console Help. Add Host You can add the IIS host server under the iis node to start monitoring of the server. You can then configure the host properties for monitoring the counters on the host. You can generate alarms when the host does not respond. You can also check the Windows credentials for logging on to the monitored host. Follow these steps: 1. Click the Options icon next to the iis node in the navigation pane. 2. Click the Add New Host option. 3. Update the field information and click Submit. The host is saved under the iis node. Every new host contains four child nodes (ASP, IIS, System, and Webservices), which are used to configure the monitoring properties of the host. Chapter 2: Configuration Details 19

20 Monitor the Application Pool Monitor the Application Pool Being a web site administrator, monitoring the health and status of the application pool is important. This monitoring ensures web site availability and response time at an optimum level. The probe gives the lists of available application pools on the monitored host and lets you configure monitoring counters for each application pool separately. Important! The Application Pool monitoring feature is supported for IIS 7.0 or later. The APP_POOL_WAS counter must be available on the Windows Performance Monitor of the system where IIS 7.0 server or later is installed. Follow these steps: 1. Go to the Application Pool node in the navigation pane. 2. Select more than one application pools from the Available list and move to the Selected list and click Save. The selected applications pools appear under the Application Pool node in the navigation pane. 3. Select the appropriate application pool name node. 4. Activate the application pool monitoring in the General Configuration section. 5. Activate appropriate monitoring counters of the application pool. Refer to the application pool name node for field descriptions of the counters. 6. Click Save. The probe starts fetching values for the selected monitoring counters of the application pool for generating alarms and QoS. Stop Monitoring the Application Pool You can stop monitoring an application pool, when it no longer requires monitoring. For example, if no website is hosted in the application pool, then you can stop its monitoring. Follow these steps: 1. Select the appropriate application pool name node. 2. Click the Options icon and select the Delete Application Pool option. Alternatively, you can move the application pool back from the Selected list to the Available list in the Application Pool node. 3. Click Save. The probe stops monitoring the application pool and removes it from the navigation pane. 20 Probe Guide for IIS Server Monitoring

21 Delete Host Delete Host You can delete the IIS host server when you no longer want to monitor it. Follow these steps: 1. Click the Options icon next to the Host-host name node in the navigation pane. 2. Click the Delete Host option. The host is deleted from the navigation pane. Chapter 2: Configuration Details 21

23 Chapter 3: IIS Server Monitoring (iis) Metrics Many CA Nimsoft Monitor probes ship with the default QoS threshold values set. These values provide an idea of the type of values to be entered in the fields and are not necessarily recommended best practice values. To aid in tuning thresholds and reducing false-positive alarms, this section describes the QoS metrics and provides the default QoS thresholds.
