3 Introduction What are VET in Schools programs? VET in Schools programs give students a head-start in their career and confidence as life-long learners, and provides credit points towards their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). Who is this booklet for? This booklet has been designed to provide students, parents and schools with information on the trade training opportunities available to Year students through SkillsTech Australia (TAFE) VET in Schools programs. SkillsTech Australia (TAFE) gives students the opportunity to gain credit points towards their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) while studying one of following trades: automotive building and construction electrical/electronics manufacturing and engineering sustainable technologies. Study options provide a learning environment best suited to the student. Women in Hard Hats Information for women and girls considering their career options Recent statistics indicate more and more girls and women are getting into study or employment in hard hat industries every day, but more are still needed! Women in Hard Hats is a Queensland Government initiative. Led by the Office for Women, it encourages women and girls to enter and remain in hard hat careers in a range of industries. Read more on page 24 of this booklet. Students can choose to study a trade: as a school-based apprentice or trainee at school via SkillsTech Australia s Partnership with Schools at a SkillsTech Australia (TAFE) training centre. 1

4 SkillsTech Australia Who is SkillsTech Australia? SkillsTech Australia is Queensland s lead TAFE institute in trade and technician training. SkillsTech Australia (TAFE) SkillsTech Australia is Queensland s lead TAFE institute in automotive, building and construction, manufacturing and engineering, and electrical/electronics and sustainable technologies. We are the largest public provider of trade and technician training in Australia, with eight training centres across Brisbane and 15,000 students per annum. We work with peak industry groups and centres of excellence to develop and deliver high-quality programs that meet industry needs. SkillsTech Australia delivers over 120 training programs including school-based programs, pre- and post-trade training, diplomas, advanced diplomas, licensing, and traineeships and apprenticeships. We pride ourselves on providing industry-relevant training, delivered by experienced industry-qualified teaching staff in state-of-the-art facilities that meet student needs. 6 VET in Schools programs What are VET in Schools programs? SkillsTech Australia offers practical, hands-on trade and technician training programs for students in their senior phase of learning. Train using the latest technology 4

7 School-based apprentices and trainees School-based apprentices and trainees School-based apprentices and trainees can access a range of training options with SkillsTech Australia including block delivery, day release (one day per week), flexible on-campus attendance, online or workplace training. Training for school-based apprentices and trainees covers over 50 different qualifications across the automotive, building and construction, electrical, manufacturing and engineering, and sustainable technologies trades. Training can be accessed through one of our eight training centres in the Brisbane metropolitan area. To determine the training options available for a specific trade area, contact the SkillsTech Australia Client Service Centre on How do students get a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship? Like all apprenticeships and traineeships, students will need to find an employer who is willing to employ them as a school-based apprentice or trainee in their chosen trade. Some useful ways to find an employer are through family and friends, by contacting employers directly, contacting a group training organisation and applying for jobs in the newspaper or on the internet. How do students enrol for their training? Step 1: The student must have a signed apprentice/trainee contract with an employer. Step 6: A SkillsTech Australia Booking Officer will book the student into their first training sessions. Note: SkillsTech Australia has a dedicated School-based Apprentice/Trainee Coordinator who will work with the school to make sure the student s training can be balanced with their work and school commitments. What fees do students pay for training? School-based apprentices and trainees do not pay fees for their training with SkillsTech Australia. Training for school-based apprentices and trainees is funded by the Department of Education and Training. Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) A school-based apprentice or trainee can earn points towards their QCE for their on-the-job work time and off-the-job training. Completion of the required number of competencies at SkillsTech Australia for your school-based apprenticeship can contribute up to 2 points towards a QCE. Students and parents are advised to speak with the school VET Coordinator for information about. Step 2: The employer selects a Supervising Registered Training Organisation (SRTO). An SRTO is the training provider, e.g. TAFE. Step 3: The Department of Education and Training will notify SkillsTech Australia of the apprenticeship/traineeship if the employer chooses SkillsTech Australia to be the training provider. Step 4: SkillsTech Australia will contact the student within three months of commencing employment to organise an induction. Step 5: A SkillsTech Australia Workplace Services Officer will conduct the induction and inform the student about training options with SkillsTech Australia. 5

8 Partnerships with Schools Partnerships with Schools Partnerships with Schools programs allow SkillsTech Australia to work with schools to deliver VET training to school students. The training is delivered at the school with the support and guidance of SkillsTech Australia. Our experienced staff will assist schools to provide the skills and knowledge that will prepare your students for further study, university or the workforce. SkillsTech Australia as the Registered Training Organisation (RTO) will provide a SkillsTech Australia mentor who will be assigned to work with your school throughout the program, providing advice and support for delivery and assessment and to ensure the training delivered is of the same high standard delivered at SkillsTech Australia. The mentor works closely with your school to ensure adequate, industryrelevant and Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF) compliant training while ensuring the needs of students are being met. SkillsTech Australia also provides full administrative support, including enrolment, results and awards, for your school to deliver the program. After assessing the school s physical and human resources, the mentor will work with the teachers on the planning and strategies for delivering the program. The mentor then liaises with the school during the year to provide advice and ensure compliance is maintained. Some of the programs available through our Partnerships programs include: Certificate I in Construction Certificate I in Engineering Certificate II in Furniture Making Certificate II in Sustainable Technologies Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Career Start) Computer Aided Drafting (competencies from the Diploma Engineering Technical) Enrolments and results Students are enrolled with SkillsTech Australia which issues results and awards. These results are uploaded directly to the Queensland Studies Authority (QSA) database by SkillsTech Australia for recognition for each student s Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). What fees do students pay? Queensland school students who undertake nationally recognised VET training at SkillsTech Australia as part of their senior studies are not charged tuition fees. As the training is usually delivered at the school, it is up to the school to decide if a levy will be charged for the materials used as part of the program. Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) Completion of competencies and qualifications at SkillsTech Australia can contribute towards a student s QCE. For Certificate I programs, the full program must be successfully completed to obtain. For Certificate II and above, partial points may be awarded for partial completion. Schools participating in a SkillsTech Partnerships with Schools will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) detailing the role of the school and of SkillsTech Australia. The school must also provide evidence of the physical and human resources they have to support the program. 6

9 On-campus training On-campus training Students can take advantage of training opportunities by attending one of SkillsTech Australia s training centres one day per week over one or two years of their senior schooling. By attending a SkillsTech Australia training centre, students benefit from industry-relevant training, our experienced teaching staff and state-of-the-art resources. How do students enrol? Students should nominate to participate in their chosen SkillsTech Australia program through their school VET Coordinator. Nominations should be returned to the SkillsTech Australia Schools Liaison Unit via the Nomination Form by the due date. The SkillsTech Australia Schools Liaison Unit will notify schools of the successful placement of students and forward enrolment packs for successful students. Students should ensure they enrol by the enrolment due date to secure placement. VET in Schools s should be identified on a student s Senior Education and Training (SET) Plan. What fees do students pay? Queensland school students who undertake nationally recognised VET training at SkillsTech Australia as part of their senior studies are not charged tuition fees. However, associated fees for materials used in the program of a student s learning will be charged. These costs are minimal and vary for each program. These fees must be paid prior to commencement of a SkillsTech Australia program. Some courses may require students to purchase additional material or equipment. This will be advised within student enrolment packs prior to enrolment. International fees will apply to all international students. SkillsTech Australia charges a yearly administration fee of $30. This includes the cost of a student ID card and is payable with the enrolment prior to commencement. Students receive their ID card on the first day of attendance. This fee is not refunded if a student withdraws from or cancels their program. All programs commence in February 2011 (excluding the Para-professional Construction Pathways program). To enhance a student s ability to successfully complete all units of competency, it is important that students, parents and schools commit to the program and ensure students attend all scheduled classes. Students missing classes during a term will be at risk of not successfully completing their program. Cancellations/changes Any request for cancellation or change to a program must be made in writing to the SkillsTech Australia Schools Liaison Unit, Locked Mail Bag 202O, Archerfield, Queensland Any request for a change to the nominated program must be received prior to commencement of the program. Any changes to the program are subject to availability in the requested program. Refunds If a student withdraws prior to the commencement date of their program, a refund may be issued for any materials fees paid. If a student withdraws after their program has commenced, a partial refund may be issued. All requests for refunds must be made in writing to SkillsTech Australia Schools Liaison Unit, Locked Mail Bag 202O, Archerfield, Queensland 4108, and are subject to approval. An administrative fee of $10 applies to all refunds. To participate in SkillsTech Australia schools programs, students must meet the following entry requirements: Be at least 15 years of age upon commencement of the class Be enrolled and attending school to enrol in a SkillsTech Australia VET in Schools program Adhere to TAFE Queensland and SkillsTech Australia rules and regulations while attending VET in Schools programs Meet any entry requirements specified for individual programs. 7

10 Student support SkillsTech Australia supports an inclusive learning environment and we are happy to work with schools to include students where possible. However, for those students requiring support services, the primary responsibility for provision of this support lies with the school. Prior to enrolment, schools must notify SkillsTech Australia of any student who may require support. SkillsTech Australia will endeavour to work with the school to make the most appropriate arrangements for each individual student. Personal Protective Equipment All students undertaking training in a workshop environment are required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). It is mandatory for students to supply and wear steel-capped boots, appropriate safety clothing and safety glasses. Important information commencement is subject to sufficient numbers. Schools For more information about on-campus training programs, please contact SkillsTech Australia s Schools Liaison team on Vocational Placement and Work Experience Vocational placement is where a student is placed in a workplace to receive practical training and experience as part of a student s course. Vocational placement hours are in addition to the nominal hours of the qualification or statement of attainment. Vocational placement is mandatory for students to be awarded the Certificate I in Plumbing and is being trialled for the Certificate II in Automotive Mechanical at Bracken Ridge for the 2011 intake. Hours of vocational placement are specified against these programs. When vocational placement is not undertaken, it is recommended students undertake work experience relevant to their trade training. Work experience is organised and administered by the school and is not an assessable part of a student s SkillsTech Australia program. Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) Completion of competencies and qualifications at SkillsTech Australia can contribute towards a student s Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). Points are indicated against each program for successful completion of the full qualification or program. For Certificate II and above, partial points may be awarded for partial completion.
