3 The Graduate School of Engineering Admission Policy Doctoral Degree (3 Year Program) Department of Science and Technology At the Department of Science and Technology, Graduate School of Engineering, we aim to foster students and researchers who contribute to the promotion of the next generation of innovative science via the creation of highly advanced mechanical, social infrastructure, electrical and information systems as well as by the creation of new materials in order to realize an Eco-friendly society. We seek students with a basic understanding of each specialized fields of systems engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, chemistry and materials science as well as those who possess the motivation to acquire further expertise and the ability to carry out applied, creative research. Furthermore, a strong enthusiasm to contribute to the development of science and technology is required along with a willingness to acquire doctor s degree. By accepting students with various backgrounds, creating a highly aspiring study and research environment, we implement unique entrance examinations in addition to a general entrance examination, examination for those currently employed as researchers and technicians, as well as the overseas students examinations. Furthermore, we implement screening test for the master`s graduates of the Graduate School of Engineering, Nagasaki University. 1

6 1.Number of students to be admitted Department Department of Science and Technology Program System Engineering Electrical Information Materials Engineering Number of students to be admitted one (Note)The number includes candidate(s) who apply under the Screening for Masters Graduates, Graduate School of Engineering, Nagasaki University. 2.Application Requirements For those who fulfilled one of the following requirements. For candidate(s) under Entrance Examinations for Those Currently Employed must be working as a regular employee of a company at the time of application and has the consent from authorized supervisor, as well as fulfilled one of the following requirements. For overseas students, candidate(s) must be non-japanese citizens who fulfilled one of following requirements. (1) Those who have completed (or are expected to complete by September, 2013) a Masters or a Professional degree. (2) Those who have been conferred (or will be conferred by September,2013) a Masters or a degree equivalent to a Professional degree in countries other than Japan. (3) Those who have been conferred (or will be conferred by September, 2013) a Masters degree or a degree equivalent to a Professional degree, in Japan, after the completion of required correspondence courses, conducted by authorized school outside of Japan. (4) Those who have conferred (or are expected to conferred by September,2014) a degree equivalent to a Masters or a Professional degree after completing postgraduate courses at the foreign education institute in Japan authorized by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science (5) Those who have completed the courses from the United Nations University and have been conferred (or are expected to be conferred by September, 2014) a degree equivalent to a Masters degree. (6) Those who have completed or will complete the education program at a foreign school, the United Nations University or an education facility specified in (4), and those who have passed or expected to pass by September 2013 the examination as well as screening test prescribed in Article 16 of the Establish Standards of the Graduate School and have had their academic achievement recognized as equivalent to or greater than those with a Masters degree. 7 (7) Those who are specified by the Ministry of Education Culture, Sports, Science.(1989,Ministry of Education, Public Notification No.118)as follows: 1 Those who have been engaged in research for more than two years at university or research institutes after their university graduation and have had their academic achievement through the relevant research result recognized as equivalent to or greater than those with a Masters degree. (Refer to Page 4( 3. Preliminary screening) 2 Those who have been engaged in research for more than two years at university or research institutes after completing 16 years of required school education in countries other than Japan, or completing 16 years of required school education by correspondence course conducted by foreign countries, in Japan, and have had their academic achievement recognized as equivalent to or greater than those with a Masters degree through the relevant research result by the Graduate School of Engineering.(Refer to Page 4 (3. Preliminary screening)) (8) Those who have been deemed to have academic ability equivalent to and greater than those in the Graduate School through individual preliminary screening, and will be at least 24 years of age by September 30, (Refer to Page 4 (3. Preliminary screening) ) 3.Eligibility Preliminary Screening (1) Candidates applying under the Application Requirements (6),(7) or (8) must submit the following documents to the Student Administration Office, Graduate School of Engineering by 2013, May 31(Fri). 8 (2) Preliminary screening will be conducted via submitted documents. The results of preliminary screening for eligibility will be sent to the candidates by 2013, Jun 13(Thu). Those who are deemed eligible for application must follow the procedures set out in 4. Application Period and 5.Application Procedures. 4.Application Period From 2013, June 24 (Mon) to 2013, June 28 (Fri) (1) Applications must be registered express mail service and must be received by the predetermined date. (2) Candidates may submit the documents in person between 9:00 to 17:00. 5.Application Procedures Candidates must submit the following documents to the Student Administration Office, Graduate School of Engineering, Nagasaki University by the predetermine date. Attach your ID photos (size L4cm x W3 cm, upper body, no hat or cap, full face view, taken within the 3 months) on the prescribed Photo Card and Admission Ticket. However, not required for candidates who has no Masters degree. Fill out the abstract of research plan that candidates wish for in the form prescribed by this graduate school. Candidates must submit a subscribed consent form of the head of the organization if working in the government office or private company. Candidates must fill in their name, address, and postcode accurately in the Address Sticker. If there are any changes after the submission, candidates must notify immediately. A self-addressed prescribed envelope with 350 stamp affixed. Candidates must fill in their name, address, telephone number correctly with a black or blue pen in the marked boxes on the supplied payment form. Make sure the receipt has a stamp of the handling bank. Important Notice for your application Candidates will not be accepted if the Entrance Examination fee that have not been paid by the specified date or the proof of the payment is not attached to the prescribed field on the Proof of the Payment for Entrance Examination Fee Section or should the Bank Stamp be missing on the proof on the proof of the payment. Note that if the Entrance Examination Fee is to be paid on the last day of payment period, the completed set of application documents must be submitted by 17:00 after the payment. (Double check the business hours of the bank.) The payment for the Entrance Examination Fee that already been paid is not refundable with any reason except the following circumstances. Made the payment without submitting Application Form, or the Application been refused, or accidently made the payment twice. Request for the refund must be made with 14 days from the last day of the application period. 10 6. Important Note Regarding the Application (1) No changes can be made on the application form after the submission. (2) All the submitted documents for the application cannot be returned for any reason. 7.Screening Method Conducting of the following examination subjects depend on the admission division. However, missing of any required examination subjects will result in fail. The individual oral examination (interview) will be held by multiple examiners. (4) Acceptance Criteria Successful candidates will be those who score more than 60% of the total score. Oral Examination (Interview) will be evaluated throw following evaluation contents. (Evaluation contents) Candidates will be evaluated their motives for the application, basic scholastic achievement of masters degree, as well as their plans for research in comprehensive way through the interview refer to the application documents. (5) Interviews or Entrance Examinations over the Internet Overseas students may be eligible for taking Oral Examination (Interview) over the Internet. Candidate for the Online Interview must apply in advance

11 8.Announcement of Successful Candidates 2013, July 26(Fri)10:00~ The results for the successful candidate(s) will be notified through mail and also announced on the Graduate School of Engineering notice board on the day. (2) Candidates must enter designated examination room 20 minutes before examination starts. (3) All cellular phones must be turned off before entering the examination room. 10.Enrollment Procedures Successful candidates must follow the necessary procedures for the enrollment. More details will be enclosed in the Success Notification. (1) Procedures Period From 2013, September 11(Wed) to 2013, September 13(Fri) 9:00~17:00 (2) Fees Enrollment fee 282,000 (Note)Enrollment fees shall not be refunded once paid. Additional Information 1 Tuition Fee for 2013(Annually): 535,800(The first semester 267,900, The second semester 267,900) 2 Payment periods for the tuition fee will be as follows. 12 11.Handling of Personal Information (1) Obtained personal information is used for selecting enrollees. Also the personal information of successful candidates and enrollees are used for enrollment procedures, and the student registration. (2) The grades of the entrance examination and other personal information are used as the references for the recommendation of the 1st year scholarship students, as well as for the selection of the candidates for exemption of entrance fee and tuition fee. (3) Obtained personal information for the selection of enrollee, and for the entrance examinations are also used in statistical surveys and research related to the selection of enrollees. (4) Obtained personal information through (via) the application documents and entrance examination are not used for the purposes other than the purposes mentioned above nor to provide to the third parties, except the case as provided in Article 9 of Act on the Protection of Personal Information Held by Independent Administrative Agencies. 12. Other Information If requesting application guidelines by mail, enclose the self-addressed return envelope with 390 stamp affixed (An end opening envelope No.2 24cm x 33cm), send it to the Student Administration Office, Graduate School of Engineering in the envelope with Request for Doctoral Degree Application Guidelines, Department of Science and Technology, Graduate School of Engineering, Nagasaki University written red on the front. 14 Curriculum Policy Through providing an educational curriculum that harmonizes the science and technology related to the creation of mechanical, social infrastructure, electrical information systems as well as new materials, and via implementation of practical education through industrial-academic collaboration, we train students to help them acquire wide range of engineering knowledge, the ability to discover issues and pursue ideas, and international communication skills to be able to flourish globally. For that purpose, an educational curriculum has been structured with a comprehensive discipline and three specialized subjects of systems engineering, electrical engineering and computer science, and chemistry and materials science. As for the comprehensive discipline, in order to foster high expertise with an extensive knowledge, two subjects are organized as compulsory subjects: Special Seminars on Science and Technology which is conducted by assistant faculty (who are from closely related areas), and providing each students research subjects of interdisciplinary academic, and Special Research on Science and Technology which will support the improvement of research capability by conducting practical training to cultivate applied skills via the collaboration of faculty from different specialized areas. Also, carrying out Special Lectures on Science and Technology to help them grasp the entire field of engineering as well as the basic concept of each different field through the implementation of collaborated lectures of industry and academic.
