2 Enrollment in April 2017 Graduate School of Economics, Osaka University Application Guidelines for Master s Program Admissions Policy for the Graduate School of Economics Based on Osaka University s admission policy, the Graduate School of Economics uses a variety of methods to select candidates. We seek talented individuals with the fortitude and logical thought process needed to systematically grasp the most groundbreaking knowledge in fields of economics and business administration. These individuals should be able to put specialized knowledge into practice, possess the intellectual curiosity needed for their education, and innovatively and originally solve problems from start to finish. They should also have the ability to communicate, including in English. The selection process for the master s program includes a written examination that will be used to gauge each candidate s knowledge regarding economics and business administration, their analytical ability level in mathematics and statistics. Furthermore, an oral examination based on the candidate s research proposal (to be presented along with application form) will be used to determine whether the candidate has the requisite basic abilities needed for the field in which they aspire to work, whether they have the motivation and vision to write their master s thesis, as well as whether they have sufficient logical thinking skills, intellectual curiosity, innovation, and communication abilities

Department and Admission Quota Department Course Admission Quota Economics Business and Management Economics History Applied Economics Management Studies Business MOT Global Business The Graduate School of Economics consists of two departments; Economics, and Business and Management Studies. Lectures and seminars are conducted by the faculty members from the Graduate School of Economics, the Institute of Social and Economic Research, and the Graduate School of International Public Policy. The economics and history courses in economics provide an education designed to produce researchers and highly specialized professionals based on the most groundbreaking research in the fields of microeconomics, macroeconomics, history of economics, economic development, economic history, business history, public economics, finance, international economics, labor economics, and econometrics. The applied economics course in economics offers an education that cultivates students abilities to analyze economic systems based on the most groundbreaking research in the fields of public finance, finance, public economics, international economics, labor economics, environmental economics, econometrics, economic history, and business history. The course is primarily aimed at producing talented individuals and highly specialized professionals who will go on to work as economists in policy planning institutions and think tanks. The business and management department is segregated into a business course, a management of technology (MOT) course, and a global management course. This program offers an education designed to produce not only researchers, but also talented individuals and highly specialized professionals who will go on to work in the planning and research sectors of the business world. The course is based on the most groundbreaking research in the fields of management science, accounting, management theory, management of technology (MOT), and global management. This includes organization management, management strategy, operations research, marketing, business data and statistics, management information systems, finance, financial engineering, financial accounting, managerial accounting, venture project management, and intellectual property management. Application Qualifications Applicants who meet any of the following criteria are eligible to apply for the Master s Program: (1) University graduates or those who expect to graduate by the end of March (2) Those who have earned or expected to earn (by the end of March 2017) a bachelor s degree accredited by the National Institution for Academic Degrees and University Evaluation. (3) Those who have completed or expect to complete (by the end of March 2017) 16 years of formal education in a foreign country. (4) Those who have completed or expect to complete (by the end of March 2017) 16 years of formal education by taking correspondence courses in Japan that are administered by a foreign educational institution. (5) Those who have graduated or expect to graduate by the end of March 2017, from an educational institution in a foreign country (and have completed a total of 16 years of education). The foreign educational institution should be one designated as being equivalent to a foreign university by the Ministry of MEXT (the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Sciences and Technology of the Japanese Government). (6) Those who have completed or expect to complete by the end of March 2017 a specialized curriculum at a special vocational school designated by the Minister of MEXT (the length of the course should exceed more than four years, and the curriculum must meet the criteria set by MEXT). (7) Those who have been approved by the Minister of MEXT (as described in Ministry of Education Directive, Vol. 5, 1953). (8) According to Paragraph 2, Article 102 of the School Education Law, those entering a graduate school must possess high academic abilities enough to study at a graduate level. (9) Those who have been enrolled at a university for more than three years (by the end of March 2017) and recognized as individuals who have obtained the required credits with outstanding academic results. (10) Those who have completed or expect to complete by the end of March 2017, 15 years of formal study in a foreign country. Those who have completed or are expect to complete by the end of March 2017, correspondence courses in Japan that are administered by a foreign educational institution and have thereby completed 15 years of formal study in a foreign country. Those who have graduated or expect to graduate by the end of March 2017, from an educational institution in a foreign country (and have completed a total of 15 years of education). The foreign educational institution should be one designated as being equivalent to a foreign university by the Ministry of MEXT (the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Sciences and Technology of the Japanese Government). (Graduates from universities in China who have completed only three years of undergraduate study are not qualified to apply);. (11) Those who are at least 22 years of age as of March 31, 2017, and can be recognized by passing the Preliminary Eligibility Screening conducted by the Osaka University Graduate School of Economics, as possessing academic abilities equivalent or superior to those of university graduates. Important Notes: Applicants who have been enrolled at a graduate school or have completed a master s or doctoral course must confirm the followings; Applicants who have graduated from a university in Japan Application Qualification No. 1 Those who have graduated from an overseas university (and have completed 16 years of formal education) Application Qualification No

5 Those who have been enrolled at a university for more than three years with outstanding academic results and wish to enter our graduate school after a successful preliminary interview Application Qualification No. 8 Those who have graduated from an overseas university (and have completed 15 years of formal education), and if it is confirmed by preliminary interview that they have achieved outstanding academic results Application Qualification No. 10 Those who have dropped out of a university after having been enrolled for more than three years, and if it is confirmed by preliminary interview that they have scholarly abilities equivalent or superior to those who have graduated from a university Application Qualification No. 11 Applicants who fall under application qualifications Nos must go through the necessary procedures, as the Preliminary Eligibility Screening is required. Application Documents, No.5 (Notes) Credentials of overseas universities are accepted in English or Japanese. However, this restriction is inapplicable if a translation verifying the public institution (excluding schools or educational corporations) is attached. Applicants may also be required to submit additional relevant documents if necessary. Once application documents are received, we do not return them to the applicant unless the documents have been received after the deadline or incorrectly filled out. 9 3 Transcripts 4 Bachelor s Degree Certificate of (Expected) Completion Applicants who have graduated from a bachelor s program or are currently enrolled in a bachelor s program, or graduate school should attach the transcripts from both attended school. The month and year of admission should be noted on the certificate (Not necessary if they are noted on the transcript). Those who have graduated from a foreign university must submit a degree certificate issued by their foreign university. Please adhere to the following criteria: 1. Use Japanese or English. 5 Research Proposal form provided 2. As a general rule, use A4-size paper and a word processor to type 30 lines of 40 characters for Japanese (horizontally) and double spacing for English, with a maximum of three pages. Please affix them together with a paper clip do not staple or glue them. 3. It should be typed, not handwritten. You may also attach academic papers that are related to your research proposal. 4. Submit one copy. 6 Original Copy of an Official Score Certificate of Either TOEFL, TOEIC or IELTS How to Send (1) TOEFL or TOEIC Original copy of an official score should be received within the specified date. Applicants for the summer entrance examination can enclose the score with other application documents or send it separately from them by the deadline. Applicants for the winter entrance examination should enclose the score with other application documents. (2) IELTS Please request Eiken Foundation of Japan to send an official Test Report 5. The contents should be related to the proposed research project to be pursued on admission to our graduate school. Original Copy of an Official Score Certificate of Either (1), (2) or (3). (1) Official Score of TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) ibt or PBT * TOEFL-ITP is NOT acceptable. (2) Official Score of TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) * TOEIC-IP is NOT acceptable. (3) Test Report Form of IELTS (Academic Module) * IELTS (General Training Module) is NOT acceptable. (Note1) Applicants who have graduated or expect to graduate from a university in which English was the primary language are exempted from submitting those scores above. However, you will be required to present documentation verifying that English was the primary language at your institute. (Note 2) TOEFL, TOEIC and IELTS scores are considered valid if taken within the two years preceding the date in which the written entrance examination is taken. As it takes time to receive the official score, please give yourself plenty of time to apply for it

Copy of a Certificate of Residence issued by a local government office which clearly specifies your status of residence and the duration of your stay (those who have not yet registered may submit a copy of their passport). MEXT Scholarship Student Certificate Not applicable to those who have graduated or expect to graduate from a university in Japan. 1. Not required for the family members of the applicant. 2. Not applicable for special permanent resident approved by the Ministry of Justice. 3. Please submit an original copy of your certificate of residence issued by local government office. Possibility of Taking a Fast-Track Program The program duration, in principle, is two years. However, regarding the MOT course in Business and Management department, there is the possibility of taking a fast-track program (minimum one year) for those who hold a technical degree at the time of enrollment, have

13 equivalent academic achievements, or are recognized as having already acquired a foundation of knowledge in the fields of management studies such as accounting, finance, organization management, management strategy, marketing, operations research, management information, and quantitative analysis. Program for Leading Graduate Schools The Program for Leading Graduate Schools will promote the efforts of graduate schools to create and develop world-class, inter-disciplinary degree programs. The aim is to produce graduates capable of serving as international leaders in academia, business, and government. Under the supervision of MEXT (Japanese Government), five programs (these can also be taken optionally as a five-year integrated degree program.) are offered at Osaka University. Successful applicants to the master s program at Graduate School of Economics are eligible to apply for the following programs. Please refer to the following URL for further information. Requesting Application Documents, Brochures, and Past Exam Papers When mailing a request for application documents, brochure, and past exam papers, please enclose a self-addressed and stamped* envelope (24cm 33cm). Address the envelope to Educational Affairs Section, Graduate School of Economics, Osaka University, with Graduate School of Economics Master s Program Admissions Request clearly written in red on the top of the envelope. * How much postage stamp you need to enclose; For application documents or brochure 250-yen postage stamp For application documents and brochure 500-yen postage stamp For past exam papers 205-yen postage stamp For application documents, brochure, and past exam papers 500-yen postage stamp Concerning Requests: Educational Affairs Section, Graduate School of Economics, Osaka University 1-7 Machikaneyama-cho, Toyonaka, Osaka Policy on Handling Personal Information (1) Names, addresses, and other personal information obtained through the application procedure will be used in the Entrance Examination Process, in the Announcement of the List of Successful Applicants, in the Admission Procedures, and in the distribution of program leaflets. For those admitted into Osaka University, personal information will also be used in academic-related matters (such as health care management, school fee remissions, scholarship applications, career support etc.), and in school fee management. (2) Information obtained through the entrance examination will be used in statistical analysis of examination results, and in research on admission methods. (3) In some cases, external contractors are consigned to conduct portions of the process mentioned above. In this instance, all or part of the individual s personal information will be presented to an appropriate contractor, though only after the contractor signs an agreement assuring the appropriate handling of personal information

Exam Admission Ticket will be sent after Friday, August 5, If you have not received it, please contact us from Monday, August 8 to Wednesday August 10, or from Wednesday, August 17 to 4:00 p.m. Friday, August 19 (except Thursday August 18), If we do not hear from you within the specified period, we will assume that you properly have received your Exam Admission Ticket. 2. Selection Process The selection will be made based on a combination of written examinations (subjects you selected from the following list), interview, transcripts, research proposal, and other submitted documents. (1) Written examinations: Saturday, August 20, 2016 Please take the written examination under the field of your first choice. However, since the subjects and the number of subjects in the examination differ according to the field of specialization and course, the designation of your second choice will be limited by your first choice. In other words, for your second choice, you cannot specify a field of specialization or program that has a greater number of subjects in the examination than your first choice. If the numbers of subjects are the same between your first and second choice but you do not choose the subject required for both as your first choice, then your second choice will be invalid. In those cases, they will be exempt from the written examination based on their research proposal and references from your current head of department, department advisor, or supervisor at your work place. Requirements: Receiving master s degree in engineering area or having equivalent knowledge that confirms that you have already acquired expertise in the fields of Management Studies such as accounting, finance, organization management, management strategy, marketing, operations research, management information, and quantitative analysis. Applicants will be notified through mail regarding the outcome of whether or not they are exempt.
