2 Graduate Study at AEI Building Ties beyond Boundaries
3 Introduction The Asia-Europe In s t i t u te (AEI) has successfully established itself as one of Southeast Asia s leading institutions for social science postgraduate research and te a c h i n g. Established under the As i a - Eu rope Meeting (ASEM) process with a philosophy of enhancing AsiaEurope relations, AEI aims to foster exchange of students and scholars with a view to developing a bette r understanding of the cultures, histori e s, politics, institutions, economics, business and legal practices of both regions. The origins of AEI can be traced back to the idea of establishing closer higher education linkages between Asia and Europe under the provisions of the AsiaEurope Meeting (ASEM) initiative in In 1997, the Government of Malaysia established the AsiaEurope Centre (AEC), the first step in the Asia-Europe University cooperation in education designed to support the Fourth Pillar of the ASEM process. Three years after its inception, on January 2nd 2000, the AEC was transformed into a full-fledged academic institution. It was renamed Asia-Europe Institute (AEI) and hosted by the University of Malaya, the oldest university in Malaysia. 1 Over the years, AEI has received staunch support from the Govern m e nt of Malaysia, working in partnership with other ASEM countries. It reflects Malaysia s commitment to internationalising higher education and advancing the idea of AEI as an educational infrastructure and knowledge of network for Asia and Europe in the twentyfirst century. AEI aims to be the place where intellectual discourses are held. Key issues on intensifying globalisation and regionalisation, env i ronment, inte rnational business, innovation and technologies and inter-regional relations between Asia and Eu rope are discussed. Further, AEI promotes collaborative research with academic as well as government and private sector institutions. Our research pillars and range of international postgraduate courses indicate the breadth and quality of expertise that AEI can bring to bear. As such, our postgraduate students are central to the realisation of a collaborative and innovative education hub for the future.
4 Vision To be the centre of excellence in learning, research, and international reference on Asia and Europe Mission To spearhead quality academic and research work through smart partnership between Asia and Europe International Masters Programme The Asia-Europe Institute offers four International Masters degree programmes tailored to the academic background and career needs of students. These programmes offer a number of unique characte ristics that will appeal to students from Asia, Europe and the rest of the world. 1) International Masters in Information Management (IMIM) 2) International Masters in Regional Integration (IMRI) 3) International Masters in Small-and-Medium Enterprises (IMSME) 4) International Masters in ASEAN Studies (IMAS) 2 2

This part i c u l a r programme is designed by AEI to develop this expertise by equipping students with specialist kn owledge of the link between ICT and K-Economy and the business environment in Asia and Eu ro p e. Such skills are invaluable to small-scale enterprises, multinational corporations, and policy makers in the region to ensure competitive edge and success in a global market. 3
