1 College of Business and Law Government of Ireland International Education Scholarships This scholarship is open to applicants who are from the Republic of India. Introduction This scholarship offered through the College of Business and Law, University College Cork, under the Government of Ireland Scholarship scheme comes at a very exciting time in the College s development. Evolving out of older organisational structures two new and dynamic schools, Cork University Business School and the School of Law, have emerged. These are the focus for significant investment and expansion in activity, particularly at research level. The new schools are positioned to enhance the already high quality of learning, teaching and research of which internationalisation is so important a part. The proposed full fee scholarship outlined below is aimed at attracting the highest level research programme applicants with a demonstrable interest in being educated and strong desire to progress to undertake a PhD in Ireland and, more specifically, in UCC. This scholarship is open to applicants who are from the Republic of India and is offered for a period of one year only. The Schools will consider outstanding applicants in any relevant disciplinary field in the context of their interest in Ireland and long term relationship potential with India. The College of Business and Law offering a full Fee Waiver in support of the Scholarship. A sum of 7,500 is made available to support living and accommodation expenses under the Government of Ireland Scholarship Scheme. The Scholarship can be used to pursue in either: 1. LLM by Research programme in Law or 2. MSc by Research in Business 1. The Law School and the LLM by Research The Law School is ranked in the top 100 law schools in the world (QS, 2014).The Law Faculty has strong international links with Law Schools in India (Symbiosis Law School, Pune), China (East China University of Political Science and Law in Shanghai and Beijing Technological and Business University) North America (e.g. Montreal, Temple, Brooklyn, Saint Louis), and Europe (e.g. Leiden, Oslo, Helsinki, Nanterre in Paris). Reflecting the Faculty s international reputation for research excellence, the School of Law now hosts more than 40 international graduate students, many of whom are the recipients of prestigious scholarship awards.

2 If taking the LLM by Research it is intended that the Scholarship will build on the close collaborative links that have emerged between the UCC Law Department and prestigious institutions internationally, including in India. The research postgraduate programme at UCC Law is home to a very dynamic group of research students and enjoys dedicated support and research training. Law research students are active participants in the Law research community, through attendance at seminars, clinics, workshops, conferences etc., as appropriate. The LLM by Research Degree involves writing a thesis of approximately 40,000 words under close academic supervision. The LLM by Research can be undertaken in any of the research areas of the Department which include Child & Family Law Constitutional and Administrative Law Corporate, Commercial, Consumer and Financial Law Criminal Justice Cyberlaw, Intellectual Property and Information Law Environmental, Marine and Natural Resources Law International Human Rights Law International Law Language and the Law Medical and Mental Health Law Private Law At least one member of the academic staff of the Department will act as academic supervisor to the scholarship recipient, and will be available for regular consultation meetings and will give feedback on draft work. A second member of the academic staff will act in a more general advisory role. The recipient will be expected to attend and participate in the fortnightly School Research Colloquium. A research training module tailored to the needs of legal researchers will be offered and various other support workshops and research and professional events are run throughout the year creating a dynamic environment for graduate students in particular. 3 2. Cork University Business School and the MSc by research. The MSc by Research Scholarship is intended to build closer collaborative links between Cork University Business School and India. Currently, the School currently has links that have emerged between a number of disciplines in the Business School and an expanding number of institutions in China (including Beijing Technological and Business University, Henan University of Economics and Law and Shanghai University) these now involve both staff and student exchange. More importantly a number of dual degrees and dual masters degrees are emerging as outcomes of this activity. It is hoped that in due course similar collaborative programmes will be offered with Indian Institutions. In terms of the proposed scholarship research can be undertaken in any of the main disciplines of the Cork University Business School leading to a MSc by Research in a disciplinary area drawn from the following:- Accounting, Business Information Systems, Finance, Economics, Food Business, Rural and International Development, Government, Management, Marketing. It will involve writing a thesis of approximately 40,000 words under academic supervision in the relevant discipline. The research programmes provide an opportunity to undertake advanced research on a particular aspect of business. Research degrees are based on a distinctive learning model that will develop the student s analytical, creative and communication skills. The recipient will be a member of the Graduate School of the College of Business and Law and Cork University Business School. At least one member of the academic staff of the relevant business discipline will act as academic supervisor to the student, and will be available for regular consultation meetings and will give feedback on draft work. A second member of the academic staff will act in a more general advisory role. The student will have access to the postgraduate research student facilities in the relevant discipline. The progress of the student will be monitored by the Graduate School and the home discipline in conjunction with the supervisor(s). A formal oral presentation will be required after 6 months. The student will be expected to submit the completed thesis for examination after 12 months.

4 MSc by Research NFQ Level 9, Major Award Full details available at:- Additional Support The College provides a range of generic research training modules to complement those offered by the University and these would also available to the student if required. Whilst it is not intended that there would be a work placement element within the programmes, both Schools have access to a very wide network of professional, representative and commercial entities through existing relationships and placement programmes. Where students wish to undertake research specific to any of these organisations the Schools can facilitate contact as appropriate. The College also takes a keen interest in the pastoral care of its students for example the School of Law has a Student Welfare Officer who is highly skilled in dealing with specific issues a student may face. The Head of the Graduate School also takes a keen personal interest in its students. The College has also recently initiated an International Student Ambassador s programme modelled on aspects of the Educate in Ireland Student Ambassadors Programme. This aims to capture the goodwill and positivity of returning visiting international students to their home institutions through social media activity including blogs and international fairs/home institute presentations. It is hoped that some of these will become advocates of UCC and education in Ireland as they join the full time workforce into the future. Elements of this activity may also be initiated with the potential Scholarship holder. Should the student progress to PhD level the College also offers support for travel to international conferences and events to present posters and papers on their research activity. This offers a very valuable support to young academics in making connections, establishing networks and ultimately reflecting and promoting Ireland s international education objectives. Potential Progression Opportunities In cases where there is potential for the research work undertaken to progress to PhD standard, the student may (with the support of the disciplinary head and supervisor) apply to progress to a PhD (without submitting a completed thesis for examination). All such applications will be considered by the School and College Council. Please note that the Government of Ireland Scholarship scheme covers the LLM by Research or MSc by Research for one year only and would not be available for the PhD programme. Approval of progression to PhD does not carry automatic approval of funding, students would have to apply separately for any such competitive scholarship schemes as may be available at that time.

5 Application Process For the research programmes listed above the following admissions criteria will apply and the top ranked applicant will be offered the scholarship: (a) Be an Indian citizen; (b) To be eligible for a research degree a candidate must have graduated (or expect to graduate before September 2015) from an Indian University in an approved honours level primary degree in a relevant subject area having obtained a standard of at least the equivalent of a Second Class Honours, Grade 1 or higher. (Realistically it is anticipated that the Scholarship will be awarded to the recipient of a First Class Honours level primary degree, unless a very exceptional research proposal is received from the holder of a Second Class Grade 1 Honours level degree.) (c) The following English Language Requirements will apply: IELTS 6.5 (with no individual section lower than 5.5) or TOEFL equivalent. (d) Not be in receipt of any other scholarship or bursary for the period of the Government of Ireland Scholarship award. The following criteria must also be satisfied by applicants: Availability of a suitable supervisor in the proposed research area Demonstration of aptitude for original research through the submission of a Research Proposal, which should contain the following elements: 1. Description of project, including aim and central research questions (c words) 2. Methodology, including theoretical framework and investigative and analytical methods (e.g. 500 words) 3. Relationship to existing literature and proposed contribution to knowledge in the field of study (c. 500 words) 4. Research plan, including organisation and scheduling of work (c. 500 words) 5. Statement of Suitability of UCC to Host the Proposed Research (c. 500 words) (Please include a statement of available supervision and other resources in UCC which it is considered make it particularly appropriate for the College of Business and Law to host the proposed research). 6. Sample Bibliography A statement of the prospective awardees indication of his/her long term interest in Ireland and plans on how, if the successful recipient of the scholarship, he/she will promote links with Ireland into the future.

6 The names of two academic referees must be submitted with the application documentation. It is the responsibility of the applicant to make contact with the named referees to ensure that they will return the references on the appropriate form, no later than the closing date. One of the references must be from a full-time member of the applicant s university who is familiar with the applicant s work or from a full-time member of staff in the relevant School/Department at University College Cork who is familiar with the applicants work. If both references are not received by the closing date the application cannot be considered. Selection Process With regard to the Selection Committees, in Law, applications will be assessed by the Graduate Studies Committee of the School of Law and in Business by the Research Committee of the Business School in conjunction with the relevant Department. Where there are outstanding candidates for research programmes within each school, each school will nominate one preferred candidate for consideration and a final selection committee consisting of one member from both of the Schools and Chaired by the Head of the Graduate School will make the final decision on the award of the Scholarship. The College reserves the right not to award any scholarship should it be determined that the quality of the applicants is not commensurate with the objectives and aspirations of the scheme.
