1 Physical Education 6 th Grade Grade 6 Physical and Health Education is focused on the acquisition of basic movement patterns and motor skills as they relate to physical fitness. Students will be exposed to a variety of activities where they will be introduced to basic theory and skills. Introductory knowledge and fundamental principles will be taught in four core sports (basketball, volleyball, soccer and track and field). A selection of complimentary activities will also be included. Emphasis will be placed on participation and developing an awareness of physical fitness. Students will also study a variety of health-related topics. Assessment will be based on physical fitness testing and inventories as well as skills and written testing on activities and subjects covered. Students will be given different opportunities to develop the solid foundation in health and physical activity that is necessary progress through the physical and health education program. Summary of Standards for Physical Education: 1. Uses a variety of basic and advanced movement forms 2. Uses movement concepts and principles in the development of motor skills 3. Understands the benefits and costs associated with participation in physical activity 4. Understands how to monitor and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness and know community resources 5. Understands the social and personal responsibility associated with participation in physical activity
