What is leadership? Defining Leadership

Defining Leadership What is leadership? A leader is best when people barely know he exists; not so good when people obey and acclaim him; worst when they despise him. But a good leader who talks little when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say 'we did it ourselves.' - Sun-Tsu

Defining Leadership What is leadership? A leader is best when people barely know he exists; not so good when people obey and acclaim him; worst when they despise him. But a good leader who talks little when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say 'we did it ourselves.' - Sun-Tsu For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve... - Mark 10:45 I am washing your feet as your servant so that you may learn to serve the world. - John 13:14

Patrols What is a patrol? The patrol is the real unit in scouting. It is a group or gang of boys of similar age, ability, or interests. Patrols do everything together: They attend meetings together. They do activities together. They camp together. They cook and eat together. They compete together.

Patrol Leadership Who leads the patrol? Patrols elect their own leaders: They elect a Patrol Leader. They elect an Assistant Patrol Leader. Patrol activities are led by these two leaders. Patrols appoint boys to do jobs: Scribe takes notes at meetings. Quartermaster cares for patrol gear. Grubmaster plans and buys food. Cook prepares the meals. Kitchen police cleanup after meals.

Patrol Spirit How do patrols develop patrol spirit? Initially, patrols make some important decisions together: They choose a patrol name. They make up a patrol yell. They create a patrol flag. Over time, patrols develop their own identity: They choose their patrol activities. They develop patrol traditions. They look after patrol honor.

Patrol Activity #1 Go to patrol corners Choose a patrol name. Choose a patrol yell. Return in 15 minutes When you return Share your patrol name. Demonstrate your patrol yell.

Patrol Meetings Patrols should meet once per month: Meet at a patrol members house. Meet somewhere else for an activity (sport, hike, etc) Must have an adult present. Running your patrol meeting: Opening & Call to Order Advancement Reports Patrol Business Skill Activity Game

Patrol Advancement Reports What are the guys in your patrol working on? Rank requirements. Merit badges. Why should you care? Patrol leaders report to PLC The PLC plans activities that help scouts with advancement

Patrol Business What's the patrol working on? Common advancement: rank, merit badges. Service/Flag/Skills patrol for next troop meeting. Choosing the next patrol activity.

Patrol Skills Why work on skills? Help patrol advance in rank Help patrol earn merit badges, awards Prepare for upcoming events hiking, camping Help patrol prepare for troop or district contests

Patrol Games Why play games? Games help to keep us fit. Games help develop patrol spirit. Games can build teamwork, teach leadership. Games make our meetings fun. Playing Around the world Basketball game. 5 shots around an imaginary key. Make a shot, move onto next shot. Miss a shot, pass turn to next player, or call chance. Make chance shot, move onto next shot. Miss chance shot, move back to beginning.

Patrol Activity #2 Go to patrol corners Appoint a patrol scribe. Run a quick patrol meeting. Your patrol game is Around the world. Return in 15 minutes When you return Share your patrol minutes. How did it go?

Patrols Camping Before the trip... Check your chuck box (patrol quartermaster) Plan your menu & shopping list (patrol grubmaster) Plan your duty roster (patrol leader) Go shopping (patrol grubmaster) Check-out equipment (patrol quartermaster) On the trip... Post your duty roster. Post your menu. After the trip... Clean and pack your chuck box. Check-in equipment. Report all problems (so we can fix them).

Patrol Follow Up 1. Plan a patrol meeting. 2. At your meeting: create your patrol flag. The patrol system is not one method in which Scouting for boys can be carried on. It is the only method. - Robert Baden Powell

The Troop What is a troop? A troop is a gathering of two or more patrols. Troops elect their own leaders: They elect a Senior Patrol Leader. They elect an Assistant Senior Patrol Leader. Troop activities are led by these two leaders.

Troop Leadership Who plans for the troop? Troop planning is done by the Patrol Leader's Council. The PLC includes: Senior Patrol Leader Assistant Senior Patrol Leader Patrol Leaders Troop Guides Troop Scribe attends, but does not vote. Assistant Patrol Leaders may attend, but do not vote.
