1 Midland College TMGT-3305 Organizational Theory and Practice Syllabus 3 semester credit hours (3 hours lecture) Course Description: A comprehensive analysis of individual and group behavior in organizations. Its purpose is to provide an understanding of how organizations can be managed more effectively and at the same time enhance the quality of employee work life. Topics include motivation, goal setting and rewards, job design, group dynamics, work stress, power and politics, international aspects of organizations, organizational structure, communication and organizational change and development. The basic principles and concepts of organizational behavior will be presented in the lectures, class discussions, and through the text. This course uses the case analysis skills as the focus of learning. Case analysis is the basis of student exercises that involve the student in the thought process behind the concepts covered in the text. This course is about the behavior of organizations, individuals, and groups, and about the interactions between them. Research studies have shown that most employees leave their jobs because they have poor managers. Therefore, this course will provide students with management skills needed to select, motivate, evaluate and retain the valued employees they will manage. This course will achieve the following general student learning outcomes for the BAT program: Demonstrate an understanding of the cultural, political, legal, technological, and economic forces that shape the global business environment. Apply oral, written, and electronic communication skills to effectively present and exchange information. Demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a team-centered environment to accomplish organizational goals and objectives. This course is an upper division course for students that have met the admission requirements for upper division courses. This course covers both management and organizational behavior theories and practices. Prerequisite: None Text, References, and Supplies: 1. Add here anything else the Instructor wants students to supply Course Goals/ Objectives: Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:

Demonstrate effective teamwork behaviors such as participating in activities, attending meetings, resolving conflict, completing subtasks in a timely manner. Purpose and/or sample real life applications The student will be able to define and explain the legal terminology used in this course regarding commercial papers and the requirements of negotiability and of being a holder in due course. Moreover, the student will be able to differentiate between assignment and negotiation of commercial paper and primary and secondary liabilities. The student will be able define and explain security interest, secured party, security agreement, and financing statement. Moreover, the student will be able describe the most common method of perfecting a security interest. Student Contribution and Class Policies: Each student is expected to spend six (6) to eight (8) hours per week preparing for class(reading the assigned chapters, doing the chapter exercises, and taking the self-assessment quizzes). There is a strong correlation between grades, studying, and utilizing all the resources provided to you on this site. Students will be expected to exhibit professional behavior during scheduled class times. Professional behavior includes, but is not limited to, the following: 1. Complies with the rules of Midland College 2. Attends class regularly (no more than two/three absences) 3. Is punctual 4. Exhibits cooperative behavior in class 5. Ear phones, cell phones, and beepers are considered disruptive to the class and should be avoided. 6. Is dressed appropriately 7. Takes all tests on the scheduled dates. 8. Gives the instructor advanced notice when leaving class early If it becomes necessary for a student to miss a scheduled class time, it will be the student s responsibility to contact the instructor during scheduled office hours in order to receive missed assignments. If you have a disability that needs special assistance in either preparing for the course or for taking exams, please inform me a soon as possible so that appropriate arrangements can be made for you. Missed Exams: Make-up exams (only one is allowed) will be given during the last week of classes. A student who failed to take a test on the scheduled date must remember to make it up during the last week of the session otherwise a zero score will be assigned to that test. Makeup tests will be graded from 100 points only. Please print the course schedule so that you will be able to keep up with the scheduled assignments and take the tests on their scheduled dates. Drop Policy: It is the student's responsibility to drop this course if circumstances develop that prevents his/her completion of the course. The
4 instructor will not drop a student for non-completing the course assignments. Evaluation of Students: Performance will be measured by student testing, group projects, and research paper. There will be four exams and a final. Each exam, including the final, is worth 120 points. The individual research paper and the course journal are each worth 100 points. The final will not be comprehensive; it will cover the last few chapters not covered by prior tests. The five exams, research paper, and course journal will be graded as follows: GRADING Test Test Test Test Final 120 Research Paper 100 Course Journal 100 Total 800 Semester course grade is determined as follows A B C D F Individual Research Paper: Each student is required to research, deliver, and present an individual paper on one of the following organizational behavior topics (12 to 15 pages, typed, double spaced). A separate one-page summary and conclusion is required. The presentation of the paper should not exceed 25 minutes. Since this is an online course, a power point presentation must be submitted along with your paper; there will be no need for in-class presentation. 80% of the grade will be assigned to the organization, content, and quality of the research; 20% of the grade will be assigned to the power point. 5 Self-Directed Work Teams Technology and Organizational Design Leadership Interpersonal communication Organizational conflict Motivation Power Designing Organizational Cultures Note: All TMGT courses have individual and research components. Therefore, it is essential that students utilize the available resources (instructors, team members, co-workers, library resource center s BAT collection, electronic media and BAT computer classroom) throughout the BAT curriculum. Course Journal: The purpose of this assignment is to help you understand the concepts presented in each chapter in our text, as well as, sharpen your critical thinking skills. Each student is required to submit a journal entry over each chapter starting with chapter one. The total journal entries will be seventeen covering all the chapters in the text. This assignment is worth 100 points. These journal entries are meant to encourage each student to take responsibility for her/his own learning. Each chapter entry will address the principles, concepts and theories presented in each chapter and reflect critically on the material introduced. As you read each chapter, I would like for you to continually ask yourself the following two questions: 1) Do I understand the theories, principles and concepts presented in the chapter? 2) So what? What are its implications? How would I apply this as a manager/supervisor? Moreover, as a manager/supervisor or a prospective manager/ supervisor, keeping a journal is valuable professionally. Journal entries can help you reconstruct and date what happened at meetings and conferences. They can help you reflect on your work assignments and dealing with other people. They can help you detect patterns in all of the above and learn from them. I encourage you to continue this practice at your place of work. Please adhere to the following guidelines: 1) At least one entry per week with each entry dated. Length of entries can vary from one chapter to another. 2) Each journal entry is to be typed and double-spaced. 3) The journal is to begin no later than the first week of the semester. You may e- mail your entries as an attachment. Chapter journals are to be graded according to the scope of coverage and degree of sophistication of your reflections on the chapters covered. Please demonstrate that you are thinking about the concepts and their applications. Policy on Incompletes: The grade of I (Incomplete) is given at the sole discretion of the instructor and in recognition of the fact that an exceptional circumstance has prevented a student, who has completed the major part of the work in the course, from completing all the work in that course. Exceptional circumstances do not include situations that can be considered a normal part of living such as adjusting to work schedules, compensating for transportation difficulties, etc. Course Schedule: This course will follow, to the letter, the schedule posted on the sessions' section of the course. Information: Students will select and analyze relevant organizational behavior cases from existing sources and communicate the results to others using oral and written methods. Use computers to organize, analyze, and graph organizational information for class presentations. 2. Systems: Students will understand the main forms of organizational structure and design. 3. Thinking Skills: Students will develop critical thinking skills through active participation in the discussion and analysis of cases, research papers and class projects using applicable management and organizational behavior concepts and theories. 4. Reading: Management and organizational behavior theories and practices have a unique vocabulary. Students must read and assimilate data from the text, professional journals, and narrative assignment material in order to understand and communicate information.
