The five case studies which follow highlight some of the achievements of BBS students. Bernie Mulligan Bernie Mulligan: entrepreneur, MBA student Bolton woman Bernie Mulligan found her way into university life when she made the decision to practice what she preached to her five children get a degree. Bernie is passionate about her new business and she is equally enthusiastic about the University of Bolton. Said Bernie: I was concerned I might stick out in the classroom as a mature student, but Bolton has such a diverse student population and is very welcoming. You can t walk into a classroom and say any one group dominates. It really does have a very good feeling about it. Having graduated with a First in her Business Management undergraduate degree course last summer, she is well on her way to completing her masters. And while she has yet to finish her MBA dissertation with BBS, Bernie has also found time to work on her future career, an online organic aromatherapy and holistic therapies business, set to launch this summer. Bernie, age 46, had AAT accountancy qualifications when she joined the University of Bolton and had been an auditor for Manchester City Council for 12 years. She had also been in business. Now she is ready to launch potionshop.co.uk which she is developing with her friend, Beverley Higham, a lecturer in aromatherapy and reflexology at Wigan and Leigh College.

9 07 BBS works with a wide range of organisations and students from all backgrounds David Stretton with BSCA President, Keith Higson Dave Stretton, award-winning Accountancy graduate Accountancy graduate, Dave Stretton, has proved himself to be a top-flight Bolton student. Dave, age 21, received the Bolton Society of Chartered Accountants (BSCA) Outstanding Achievement Award, which celebrates the accomplishments of the most outstanding Accountancy student from the University of Bolton. And Dave, from Chorley, was immediately snapped up by one of the BSCA judges, Stafford & Co Director, Rob Stafford. Dave is now a trainee accountant with the firm and is already working hard towards his next ambition, to qualify as a chartered accountant. Said Dave: I couldn t be more pleased after studying Accountancy at the University of Bolton. The course itself was great and the lecturers were always available for extra help and guidance, which has carried through beyond my studies. The Accountancy course has not only helped me achieve a degree but also a job and training contract at Stafford & Co. The Outstanding Achievement Award, provided and awarded by the Bolton Society of Chartered Accountants, has enabled me to find a job with study support, helping me to work towards becoming a chartered accountant.

10 08 BOLTON BUSINESS SCHOOL Sarah Sillars of Semta, the council for skills in manufacturing, engineering and science, with Beth Sherbourne Beth Sherbourne, Business Management graduate and top UK apprentice University of Bolton graduate, Beth Sherbourne, is the UK s top apprentice. She won the Virgin Media Higher Apprentice of the Year 2012 at the National Apprenticeship Awards. Beth is currently a Senior Procurement Officer at missile manufacturer, MBDA. She joined the company through its apprenticeship scheme and during her apprenticeship Beth studied part-time at the University for her degree in Business Management. In her role with MBDA Beth is in charge of a multi-million pound budget and purchases equipment for MBDA s missile systems. Beth says her time at Bolton was important and played a big part in her success: Studying part-time at the University definitely helped me during my apprenticeship. I found it useful as I could relate academic theory to the work and job I was completing. Beth has been a star student, graduating with the highest marks in her class and picking up a coveted Governors Award at graduation. She added: I found studying part-time whilst working full-time difficult due to time constraints and I often had to work non-stop over the weekends to ensure I completed all of my work to a high standard. Now the sacrifices are paying off and she is transferring the skills learned at the University into her job: The transition has been smooth. I found that I could directly apply the majority of what I learned at university within the workplace. I could relate the theory of business to my work environment allowing me to suggest improvements and apply best practise.

11 09 Building local businesses with national impact Tony Keating Tony Keating, supercar creator, businessman, MBA graduate, recipient of an honorary doctorate from the University of Bolton and now a Governor. Tony works closely with the University of Bolton to create opportunities for engineering students and is a valued industry partner. Owner of supercar company, Keating Supercars, he began his association with the University as a student within its Automobile Engineering department and later went on to study Business at masters level. Last summer Tony celebrated a double success as he was awarded Doctor of Engineering for his outstanding contribution to motor engineering on the same day as he graduated with an MBA from the University. At his graduation ceremony Tony paid tribute to his dynamic University and the valuable relationships he forged as an MBA student. He described his masters course in business administration at the University of Bolton as the best networking event I ve ever been to. He added: I graduated with entrepreneurs, with CEOs with people I will know for a long time.

12 10 BOLTON BUSINESS SCHOOL A sara Qureshi A sara Qureshi, Law student A scheme designed to reward the highest achieving students at the University of Bolton has created a job opportunity for Bury woman, A sara Qureshi. The University has worked in conjunction with Bolton law firm Stephensons Solicitors LLP, to help students gain skills for employment by offering the chance of a twoweek work placement. Stephensons interviewed three candidates and were so impressed with second year LLB student, A sara, that she was offered a fulltime position. She is now an instruction taker within Stephensons Customer Service Centre, which handles calls from new clients who are instructing the firm on a legal matter. A sara said: 'I m enjoying the different aspects of the job, mainly the constant communication with the public, advising on various legal problems, and obtaining knowledge of these matters from the solicitors who specialise in the different fields. 'I was initially very shocked to receive an offer of full-time employment from Stephensons as I was under the impression that I was being interviewed only for the two-week placement. 'The role has given me great practical experience and has increased my confidence in many ways. I m so pleased that this work placement initiative has been set up and that I have been given this opportunity through both the University and Stephensons.'

We have developed a suite of new undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Business and Management which will be offered from September Business Management (FdSc) Business Management BSc (Hons) Business Management (Top-up) BA/BSc (Hons) MBA MBA Top-up Executive MBA International Management MSc Business Management (FdSc) The foundation degree in Business Management at BBS will prepare you for a career in business or support your development if you are already working in a business environment. This two-year programme will give you applied skills and knowledge in a range of contemporary business subjects including marketing, human resource management, finance and entrepreneurship. A work-based learning module will enhance your practical employability skills. Following successful completion of our foundation degree, you can apply to progress onto the final year of the BSc (Hons) Business Management course. Business Management BSc (Hons) BSc (Hons) Business Management at BBS is a three-year honours degree programme, considered essential for those seeking to pursue a career in Business or those wishing to gain access to higher levels of responsibility within their current place of work. The course will provide you with a strong foundation in a range of contemporary business management subjects and allows you to focus on a business specialism of your choice when completing a dissertation in the final year of study. Business Management (Top-up) BA/BSc (Hons) This is a fast-track programme for those who already have a level HE5 qualification. The topup degree will build on your existing knowledge and understanding of the business environment. It will also allow you to develop key research and critical thinking skills.

15 13 MBA The new MBA is a full-time career development programme for those with previous management experience. This course focuses on developing the strategic thinking skills needed in today s global economy. Critical knowledge of organisations and their management, creative and systematic approaches to understanding business issues and developing knowledge of improving business and management practice are all part of this course. Applicants will study full-time over three trimesters, which is full calendar year. See our website for full details. MBA Top-up The MBA Top-up is a fast track full-time programme for those who already have a postgraduate qualification in management. A key element of this programme is the MBA dissertation. Applicants will study full-time over two trimesters, which is less than a full calendar year. They will need at least two years work experience and a level HE7 qualification with at least 100 credits at HE7. See our website for full details.

16 14 BOLTON BUSINESS SCHOOL The MBA is probably the world s best known business management qualification but at Bolton Business School the MBA is just one of the business courses we offer. Executive MBA The Executive MBA is a part-time programme for business professionals preparing to become senior managers. Its focus is developing the knowledge and understanding of strategic management issues in order to improve business and management practice. The programme is designed to dovetail with the demands of a full-time job. This part-time three-year course runs on one evening a week from 6pm-9pm. See our website for full details. International Management MSc This programme is for students who want a management career that takes them around the world or who will work in international organisations with multi-country operations. The focus will be global decision-making and management in a cross-cultural context. Overseas students wishing to study in a different culture will find this course attractive, as will UK students wanting to develop international knowledge. This is a full-time, three trimester, year-long course. Applicants need a UK honours degree, or its international equivalent, as minimum entry criteria. See our website for full details. 18 16 BOLTON BUSINESS SCHOOL BBS The School of Law within BBS is rapidly developing to become one of the most exciting and innovative centres of its kind in the region. In the past year the Law faculty has benefited from major investments by the University. A prestigious mock courtroom opened in 2012, a new Professor of Law, academic, barrister and part-time judge Stephen Hardy was appointed last year, a brand new library was acquired and students now benefit from lectures and workshops driven by practising judges. Law LLB (Hons) Law BA (Hons) The Law LLB (Hons) degree at BBS will prepare you for practice in the legal profession as a solicitor or barrister. An LLB law degree is highly regarded by many employers and you may choose to use this qualification as the basis for graduate level entry into other careers; for example in commerce, industry, the civil service and the armed forces. The Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Bar Standards Board, the national professional bodies for law, have accredited the University of Bolton for the purposes of the solicitors and barristers academic stage requirements.

19 17 The Law BA (Hons) course first year is identical to that of the LLB course. Law BA (Hons) students who successfully complete all of the first year modules may be eligible to transfer into year two of the LLB programme which is a qualifying law degree. You will study at the University s Business School and receive excellent levels of contact and interaction with both teaching staff and your fellow students. This will ensure a friendly, supportive and student-centred approach to your study experience. BBS offers Accountancy courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Accountancy BA (Hons) Accountancy and Financial Strategy MSc Accountancy (Advanced Standing) MSc The Accountancy BA (Hons) will give you a strong academic and vocational background for a professional career in accountancy. It will also support your career development if you are considering a broader management role, as it will provide you with the financial knowledge that is central to a great deal of business activity. The course draws on the latest practices and theories of accountancy and covers the key areas of management accounting and financial accounting and reporting, as well as offering a number of optional modules that may be selected for study in your final year. Accountancy BA (Hons) provides maximum exemption from certain professional accountancy body examinations. Special features include: The strong profession-focused element of the course and the use of case studies show accountancy in real, business situations Accredited by ACCA, ICAEW and CIMA ICAEW accredited HEPiL (Higher Education Partner in Learning) Links with AIA, IFA and CPA Australia. The Accountancy and Financial Strategy MSc degree is designed for professionals working in the business and finance sector. Successful completion of the course will support your development in a business finance career, in particular strategic accounting, in UK public and private sector businesses or international organisations. Students will develop their understanding of the principles and practice of financial strategy and accounting, the context in which they operate and how they are managed.

21 19 The Accountancy (Advanced Standing) MSc is an advanced qualification for professionals wishing to pursue financiallyoriented careers in UK public and private sector businesses or international organisations. To be eligible to join this course you must have already completed a relevant professional qualification linked with the CCAB (The Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies). Rigorous scholarship and research-informed teaching are central to our services for business. You will study in a friendly and supportive atmosphere with tutors who are enthusiastic about their subjects.
