1 The New York City Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology was created to give an in-depth intensive and experiential immersion into the study of positive psychology. Over the course of 5 weekends across 6 months participants develop a deep understanding of tools and practices from the science of happiness. With over 100 hours of instruction and collaboration time, this program will benefit both individuals interested in PP and those working with clients, organizations, and communities. The goal of the program is to help graduates develop proven habits to build positive emotions and increase well-being while evolving the skills of resilience needed for dealing with stress and life obstacles. Ultimately, the program strives to teach how healthy personal and professional relationships bring about sustainable transformation for individuals, couples, groups, and organizations. The design of the course uses a unique perspective based on the pioneering work of Martin Seligman, PhD, at the University of Pennsylvania. Considered the Father of Positive Psychology, his approach to wellbeing and flourishing includes 5 elements that will provide the foundation of the certificate program. The PERMA model includes: Positive Experiences (Pleasure) Engagement Relationship Meaning Achievement The topics of the 10 modules (details below) align with Dr. Martin Seligman s PERMA model of human flourishing. Each module provides participants with scientific research and theory, as well as tools and applications, to both apply and teach positive psychology and well-being to others. The certificate is open to all but will be of special interest to educators, coaches, social workers, managers, consultants, human resource personnel, executives, leaders, facilitators, yoga instructors, nutritionists, body workers, doctors, psychologists and other mental health/wellness practitioners. Although this is a lifetime certificate successful candidates will be offered opportunities at the Open Center to attend annual updates in the field of positive psychology for a nominal fee.
