ONCOLOGY MASSAGE CERTIFICATION With the high incidence of cancer in this country, there is a growing need for highly trained massage therapists who can support people through cancer treatment and recovery. Peregrine Institute of Oncology Massage Training
ONCOLOGY MASSAGE CERTIFICATION Not long ago, most massage therapists thought it was contraindicated to work with cancer patients. We now know that is unfounded. In fact, massage can be very beneficial in many cases, and more and more oncologists are recommending massage therapy as an adjunctive intervention. But cancer is a complex disease, and massage therapists who wish to work safely and effectively with people living with cancer need specific training. In response to that need, we have designed a 300-hour Oncology Massage Certification program led by pioneers in the field, Sandy Canzone, Doctor of Oriental Medicine, and Gayle MacDonald, author of Medicine Hands: Massage Therapy for People with Cancer. THIS CERTIFICATION PROGRAM is a comprehensive curriculum that includes Western and Eastern bodywork approaches. Coursework is presented that emphasizes safety protocols, the use of bodywork to ease the side effects of treatment, the relationship between cancer treatment and lymphedema, and the psychological experience of both patients and therapists. A number of hours are devoted to supervised work with a variety of cancer clients in a wide range of situations, including the hospital setting. In all of the courses we will be especially attentive to issues of ethics and sensitivity in working with cancer patients. Following completion of all classes, practitioners will be eligible to take the final examination, which will include a written and practical component. For convenience, the program is designed in separate modules, to be taken over a period of two or more years. Most of the modules will be offered in Santa Fe, New Mexico. For one of them, students will have a choice of Oregon, Arizona, or Ohio.

The only class that may be challenged is Manual Lymph Drainage Certification. Contact us if you have studied MLD elsewhere and believe you have equivalent or more training in this subject. Tuition for the entire training is approximately $6000. Individual courses must be paid for in advance, and all tuition must be paid in full to receive final certification. LAYING THE GROUNDWORK FOR CERTIFICATION 8 Hours with Sandy Canzone, DOM and Gayle MacDonald, MS, LMT The aim of this class is to give participants an overview of the Certification Program requirements, specifically the Ongoing Individualized Component which needs to be completed in one s own community. Participants will have a chance to more deeply explore their desire to work with cancer patients as well as to connect with others who will be participating in the program. Date and Time: To be announced Tuition: $175 MASSAGE FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH CANCER 22 Hours with Gayle MacDonald, MS, LMT Comfort-oriented massage or touch can be administered to people with cancer regardless of the severity of their condition. The purpose of this class is to lay the groundwork for safely performing bodywork with those who have a history of cancer. The following material will be covered: metastasis, the benefits of massage for those affected by cancer, adaptations necessary for people undergoing surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy, or who have received these treatments in the past, and intake procedures. The culminating activity of the weekend is the giving of a relaxation massage to a client with a history of cancer treatment. This class is also taught at various places around the country. For a complete listing, go to Tuition: $400 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
ONCOLOGY MASSAGE INTENSIVE: AN EASTERN MEDICINE PERSPECTIVE 50 Hours with Sandy Canzone, DOM In this module we will begin to take an in-depth look at the internal organ systems from an Eastern and Western point of view. This comprehensive understanding will enable you to practice in a totally different realm while massaging the oncology patient. You will learn protocols utilizing point therapy, foot reflexology and heated stone therapy techniques. Using these very specific protocols, you will learn to assist patients who are suffering from side effects of chemotherapy and radiation and help support their internal organ and immune systems. We will be massaging with special East Indian oils to nourish these internal systems. There will be a basic oncology physiology section as well as emotional support skills. You will work directly with oncology patients and learn to understand how to best assist them during their struggle with cancer and hopefully their return back to health. Please note: This module spans two 4-day weekends and must be taken as a whole. Tuition: $1080 We cannot heal others. We can only heal ourselves. Then our presence becomes healing. MANUAL LYMPH DRAINAGE 45 Hours with René Janiece, LMT, NCTMB, CLT Irene Smith, Director of Everflowing Cancer treatments put many people at risk for lymphedema, requiring bodyworkers to be well grounded in this subject. This 5-day basic course in Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is based on the techniques developed by Dr. Emil Vodder, Ph.D. When skillfully applied, this therapeutic form of soft tissue mobilization dramatically enhances lymph formation and promotes drainage within the superficial and deep systems of the lymph vascular network. During this course students will be instructed in the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system as well as the formation of disease states and conditions responsible for edema. Students will achieve the following objectives: Comprehension of relevant scientific terminology related to the lymphatic system Comprehension and differentiation between the normal and diseased states of the lymphatic system Comprehension of the indications and contraindications related to the use of MLD Competently perform the basic techniques of MLD for all body areas Develop appropriate treatment strategies for indications such as: post-surgical edema, post-traumatic edema, general detoxification, relaxation and other conditions. Please note: Although this course will address some lymphedema issues that may arise with a cancer patient, it will not prepare the participant for the treatment of lymphedema. Students who are so motivated must take an additional certification training for Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) through Klose Training and Consulting. Tuition: $900
MASSAGE IN THE ONCOLOGY SETTING 35 Hours with Gayle MacDonald, MS, LMT Practitioners will have a chance in this course to apply their massage skills in the acute care and outpatient settings. The experience will include hands-on practice with patients receiving chemotherapy, radiation, pre- and post-surgery, and during bone marrow transplantation. Therapists who enroll in the Portland class will train at Oregon Health and Science University; those who enroll in Mesa, AZ will train at Banner Desert Samaritan Medical Center; those who enroll in Toledo, OH will train at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital. Go to for more information. Location: Portland, OR; Mesa, AZ; or Toledo, OH Tuition: $750 EXAMS AND CLOSURE 24 Hours with Sandy Canzone, DOM and Gayle MacDonald, MS, LMT This final module will include written and practical hands-on exams. During these days, students will also have an opportunity to present their research papers, and share their experiences and future goals. 7 ABOUT THE PEREGRINE INSTITUTE OF ONCOLOGY MASSAGE TRAINING The Peregrine Institute of Oncology Massage Training (PIOMT) is the new name and structure for the 300-hour Oncology Massage Certification program that has been operating since The program was originally under the auspices of the Scherer Institute of Natural Healing. The Peregrine Institute was named for St. Peregrine, the patron saint of cancer patients. One may also think of the Peregrine Falcon, a previously endangered species that is making a strong comeback. We believe it is an honor and a privilege to touch another human being. This is central to all our work. In no other program we know of will the student gain such a strong academic and experiential foundation to go forward and work with cancer patients. Much of the 300-hour program is actual hands-on experience with people living with cancer. Students will see a broad range of patients some in remission and some who are in treatment and very ill. The instructors and administrators of this program are committed to a learning environment that is supportive of the students personal and professional growth and also responsive and respectful of the clients whom we have the privilege of touching. If you are interested in making a difference in the lives of people living with cancer, we invite you to join us in the beautiful high desert of Santa Fe for this cutting edge certification program! Continuing Education Credit Many of these classes meet continuing education requirements for the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork, and the others are in process of approval.
