For more information about classified opportunities, contact classified summer school staffing coordinator Mark Reynolds at mark.reynolds@jefferson.kyschools.us. Kudos to Billie Stone, physical education teacher at Bates Elementary. Stone coordinated the school s annual Jump Rope for Heart to benefit the American Heart Association. More than 280 students participated in the event, and they raised more than $9,100 which broke two school campaign records. Kudos to Katharine Abby Byers, Spanish teacher at Meyzeek Middle. Byers coordinated a six-week Claremont After-School Programs (CLASP) exploration of world diversity and culture. Students studied music, dance, and visual art as well as learned about geography, cultural facts, and how to say words and phrases in the native languages of countries that they studied. The activities allowed students to share who they are and provided an opportunity to practice social-emotional skills learned during other CLASP activities. The effects of the project exceeded Byers expectations. Students demonstrated a 30 percent increase in cultural knowledge based on pre- and postassessments, and students who participated in the program showed a shift in their behavior toward new cultures, ideas, and people. Kudos to the schools, employees, and students who participated in the 2014 Metro Louisville Mayor s Cup Academic Competition on Sat., Mar. 22. About 1,700 students from 66 elementary schools competed in such team competitions as quick recall and problem solving and individual students competed in written assessments in math, science, language arts, composition, fine arts, and social studies. JCPS coordinated the competitions that were hosted at 17 schools. To view a complete list of competitions and top finishers, click here. Kudos to Carol Cheatham, bookkeeper at Crosby Middle, and Allie Bone. Cheatham and Bone are the Dance Coaches at Stopher Elementary. The Stopher Elementary Dance Team competed on Sat., Mar. 8, and Sun., Mar. 9, in the 2014 National Dance Alliance (NDA) National Dance Championships in Orlando. Stopher finished first place in the Hip-Hop division and second place in the Pom division. Kudos to Lil Morris and Danielle Flener at Rutherford Elementary. The two coordinated a Health and Visual Arts Fair on Thurs., Mar. 20. Students and parents/guardians created eight works of art and visited 22 health presenters. Community participants included Safe Place, Bike Sense, Center for Women and Families, and YMCA. Guests also enjoyed sampling healthy foods created by JCPS Nutrition Services Chef Jim Whaley.
4 Kudos to Tom Bruker, library media specialist at Coleridge-Taylor Montessori and to Parent Teacher Association (PTA) President Bridget Gillespie-Kolb. The two coordinated the school s Literacy Week from Mon., Mar. 17, through Fri., Mar. 21. On Wed., Mar. 19, the school hosted local storyteller Cynthia Changaris, who entertained the students. The PTA sponsored a two-week Read-A-Thon, and a storybook character dress-up day was held on Fri., Mar. 23. Gillespie-Kolb created the idea of having students write a six-word memoir as part of their weekly library visit. Students watched a PowerPoint presentation about the effort and then created more than 580 memoirs with index cards and pencils. Parent/Guardians and grandparent volunteers helped the kindergarteners and first graders. The memoirs were posted along the cafeteria walls. This project really challenged the students to carefully select the right six words. To view more about the idea that inspired the six-word memoir project, click here. Kudos to the district s teachers who sponsored winning students in the Derby Festival Art Contest. The teachers and schools that had students place in the contest are as follows: Sarah Miller, Breckinridge-Franklin Elementary; Christa Hudson, Rangeland Elementary; Victoria Hernandez, Carter Traditional Elementary; Angela Kaufman, Cochran Elementary; Laura Guissinger, Norton Elementary; Emily Jarboe, Price Elementary; Sue Hall, Jefferson County Traditional Middle; Margi Garcia, Barret Traditional Middle; Lauren Dahl, Meyzeek Middle; John Muench Sr., Farnsley Middle; Cheryl Wilhoit, Pleasure Ridge Park High; Rachel Gibbs, Atherton High; and Elizabeth Berry, Louisville Male High. Kudos to the teachers and schools with students who won their grade levels in the fifteenth annual 2014 Design-A-Bus contest. The students will have their artwork displayed on the side of a TARC bus that will travel throughout Louisville for the next year and will participate in the Kentucky Derby Festival Pegasus Parade on Thurs., May 1. The schools with winner are Rangeland Elementary, Schaffner Traditional Elementary, Bloom Elementary, Hartstern Elementary, Bowen Elementary, and Highland Middle. To view the winning artwork, click here. Kudos to the district s Family Resource Youth Services Center (FRYSC) coordinators who hosted the annual Summer Camp Kickoff on Sat., Mar. 15. More than three hundred students participated from more than 70 schools. The event is one-stop information venue for parents/guardians who are looking for childcare options and summer enrichment programs. More than 40 vendors answered questions and distributed information for sports enthusiasts, nature lovers, academic enhancement opportunities, and camps that offered programs for children with special needs. Children who attended enjoyed having their faces painted and participating in various activities. Camp scholarships were awarded to several families. Kudos to district employees who recently were awarded grants to bring fun, academic programs to the district s state agency schools. Employees at Audubon Youth Development Center, Boys & Girls Haven and Brooklawn schools were awarded funding from Kentucky Educational Collaborative for State Agency Children (KECSAC). Audubon Youth Development Center will pursue Shakespeare Behind Bars, which introduces Shakespeare s works to students by having them be a part of a theatrical ensemble. The program helps students to improve such skills as literacy, decision making, problem solving, and creative thinking, and they learn tolerance and peaceful conflict resolution. Regan Leo, arts and humanities teacher, submitted the proposal. Boys & Girls Haven will study a unit about healthy living with an emphasis on creating healthy lifestyles by learning good nutritional and fitness and exercise habits. Lynn Haner, lead teacher at Boys & Girls Haven, submitted the proposal. Brooklawn will incorporate ipod Touch in their physics classroom to support the implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards. Lisa Wilborn, high school science teacher, submitted the proposal. Kudos to Stacy Kampschaefer, art teacher at Kenwood Elementary. Kampschaefer coordinated Kenwood s participation in a T-shirt design contest for P.S. from Aeropostale. Students in P2 (grade one) through grade five created designs based on the theme What Makes You Smile. More than 45,000 entries from about 600 schools were submitted from throughout the nation. Kampschaefer s fourth-grade student was honored as a finalist. Her design depicted ballet shoes with a zebra background. To celebrate the artwork created by Kenwood, the Jefferson Mall location of P.S. from Aeropostale will exhibit some of the students designs in their store windows for the month of May. Kudos to Brown School Speech and Debate Team Coach Christopher Vincent and assistant Jules Rhodes. The two led the Brown School Debate Team to an impressive finish at the 2014 Kentucky High School Speech League State Debate Championship held Thurs., Mar. 13, and Fri., Mar. 14, at the University of Kentucky (UK). In Novice Lincoln Douglas Division, a freshman was the state runner-up. In the Varsity Lincoln Douglas Division, a student who is the son of Kennedy Montessori Elementary Principal Opal Dawson made it to the semifinals round and placed among the top four in the state. He was also the fifth speaker in Varsity Lincoln Douglas. The Brown School Debate Team placed fifth overall in debate sweepstakes, which places the team among the top five debate programs in Kentucky. It is also the only JCPS team in the sweepstakes.
