5 8 Case Study Bizzie Bodies Case Study Box-Up Crime 9 Bringing out their creativity Social Entrepreneur makes learning a highly creative experience Creative learning methods such as drama, dance and art workshops improve pupils self esteem, motivation and personal development. That s why Bizzie Bodies, a social enterprise started by an LSBU student, uses creativity to teach French to children who otherwise have minimal access to creative learning outside of their school education. Emilie Mendy was looking to run arts projects and festivals when she came to university. She particularly wanted to combine this with an educational experience to help children from low income areas. Joining our Spark scheme provided her with the opportunity to not only start a business in the area she was most interested in but to do so earlier than she had thought possible, while she was still studying. Bizzie Bodies is a social enterprise that teaches French to children between the ages of 6 and 12. Emilie took advantage of the increased interest in creativity among young people, using this to help develop their French language skills. Children join her classes to learn through visual and performing arts workshops, including textiles, drama, dance, photography, 3D printing and graphic design. The Spark scheme, run by the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Institute supports students to nurture business ambitions. Those on the scheme benefit from a programme of workshops and advice and base their business at the university s Clarence Centre for Enterprise and Innovation, giving them a business address. Students also pitch for up to 500 of start-up funding to help make their idea a reality. Great feedback and growing demand for her programme of workshops during the school holidays in July and August means Emilie is now able to grow her business even further. She s currently looking for investors and collaborators and their help will allow her to run workshops throughout the year. Emilie Mendy Founder of Bizzie Bodies Boxing clever Entrepreneur helps young people have brighter futures Excluding disruptive and disengaged children from school is not only costly, it also carries the risk that the excluded children and young people will become even more disengaged from the education system and society. LSBU graduate Stephen Addison is helping young people to avoid exclusion with his social enterprise Box Up Crime. He took his motivation from his love of boxing and negative childhood experiences. Today, Box Up Crime is a successful social enterprise that offers boxing training to schools and community groups. Their Six Weeks to the Real Me programme is delivered in the classroom and provides boxing and motivational support to those at greatest risk of being excluded. 10,500 Amount awarded in grant funding since launch Box Up Crime also uses boxing training to prevent young people from engaging in gangs by working closely with Youth Offending Teams, councils, the police and community groups. Their intense, 90-minute sessions create a family environment for all fitness levels to build confidence and instil discipline. Over 150 young people attend Box Up Crime s weekly community session in Barking. Stephen Addison Founder of Box-Up Crime Through LSBU s Graduate Entrepreneur Scheme, Stephen had the opportunity to build firm foundations for his business. This 12-month programme offers motivated and ambitious graduates, who have an existing business or an idea for a new venture or social enterprise, space at our Clarence Centre for Enterprise and Innovation, funding to develop their business, and specialist workshops and advice. Recently, Stephen was presented with an Innovation Award by Teach First for his contribution to readdressing inequality in education. After his success in Barking, his vision is to go on to operate Box Up Crime in schools and communities across the UK. 150 young people attend Box Up Crime s community session each week 1,000 young people have participated in Box Up Crime s activities in the past 2 years

6 10 Case Study Choosic Listen up Innovative music streaming app promotes fresh talent The way music is consumed is constantly evolving and streaming plays a major role in shaping musical tastes and revealing fresh artistic talent. However, some avid listeners are turning away from current music apps as they tire of the rate songs and artists are repeated. Time for more intuitive technology and the coming of music app Choosic. While researching digital music distribution in his second year at LSBU, Chris Underdown discovered there were plenty of places to listen to and stream music from but the problem was discovering anything new. He was clear he needed to find a way to refine and filter music choices, inspiring him to start developing his music discovery and trending app, Choosic. Unaware of the university s Entrepreneurship and Innovation Institute when choosing LSBU he now recognises they ve been fundamental to his business. Joining their Spark scheme, Chris received funding, office space and advice while studying and took part in their Make it Happen Business Plan Competition. Case Study Choosic 11 Chris Underdown Founder of Choosic Choosic launched in 2014 and now has both ios and Android apps. It delivers daily recommendations from over 600 music blogs and is very simple to use to like songs swipe right and to dislike swipe left. Every liked song goes into a playlist and the app learns to adjust future recommendations from every disliked song. For a relatively young business, these are exciting times for Choosic. Chris was part of LSBU Rocket, the UK s first business accelerator for students and graduates delivered in collaboration with leading figures in the startup community. The six-month programme offers intensive support through mentoring and workshops from investors, business experts and successful entrepreneurs. Choosic then won a place on Mass Challenge UK, London s largest business accelerator, and Chris has been shortlisted for the Duke of York New Entrepreneur of the Year Award ,000,000 Recommendations to users 30,000 Users of Choosic ios app +500 Android downloads in the first month

7 12 Case Study Petare Case Study Petare 13 Taking to the streets Street food entrepreneur wows London with his authentic Venezuelan cooking Rotsen Ibarra, Founder of Petare and Katherine Delgado, Managing Director of Petare This year alone, nearly 700 new street food businesses joined the UK s leading body for independent caterers, a 100% rise on last year. With around 2,000 street food businesses estimated to trade across Britain, pop-up restaurants and food markets have become a staple of our streets and an inspiration for new business. When international student Rotsen Ibarra came to London to learn English and business, his longheld dream was to put his passion for cooking into creating his own company. Seeing the diverse food sold across the city inspired him to create Petare, a street food business serving authentic Venezuelan cooking, full of South American flavour. While everything in Rotsen s degree helped with his start-up, it was at a series of entrepreneurial Start & Evolve talks that he found out about Spark. This LSBU scheme offers support, guidance, funding and office space to student start-ups, allowing them to pilot their business idea while they study. Since finishing his course, Rotsen secured a Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur Visa and joined LSBU s Graduate Entrepreneur Scheme (GES), continuing to develop his business and receiving further funding. He finds the focus of the other entrepreneurs on the scheme infectious and finds it helps with his own motivation. Rotsen and Petare now regularly trade at various markets and pop-up restaurants across London. As well as a weekly street food stall at the Lower Marsh Market outside London s Waterloo station, he hosts regular pub pop-ups and this summer sold at both Startisans indoor food market, a showcase for emerging entrepreneurial food producers, and Street Feast, London s nomadic street food circus. +600kg The amount of free range British meat cooked 400kg Corn flour used to make arepas +5,700 arepas sold in 6 months

8 14 Testimonials Supporter profile 15 I m a founding member and current director of the South Bank Collective, a student-led agency which has been established with the help of the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Being part of this young and dynamic business has helped me grow as a person and developed my skill set further. Not only my photographic skills have improved, but also my leadership, management and marketing skills. Furthermore I have learned about financial and legal aspects of running a business, which is crucial knowledge for my further career. Lisa Drew, Year 2 Photography Student LSBU has helped me take the germ of an idea to a fledgling business that has every chance of success. Had it not been for the enterprise team and facilities at LSBU, it is highly unlikely I would have been able to fully execute my idea and turn it into a viable business. Supporter profile Neil Whitehead Founder of Stuff international Design Limited. Neil Whitehead is the Founder of Stuff International Design Limited, a commercial architectural, design and branding consultancy and an Entrepreneur in Residence at LSBU. A qualified architect with over 30 years in the industry, Neil aims to bring commercial success to his clients through his work. His clients have included O2 and BNP Paribas. He has considerable expertise in retail and recently created masterplans for new cities in Russia. Neil s experience in advising major brands on design, coupled with his passion for supporting start-ups, mean that he is ideally placed to support the next generation of entrepreneurs at LSBU. As an Entrepreneur in Residence, Neil delivers workshops and lectures to aspiring student entrepreneurs on topics including branding and design. He also provides mentoring support to LSBU s graduate entrepreneurs and the students on the Spark start-up scheme. I enjoy working with young, ambitious entrepreneurs and supporting them to take the first steps on their business journey, providing input and contacts. They are full of ideas! It s often when talking to a student that I reflect on my own practice and come away with fresh ideas to tackle the challenges I am facing. Whilst an Entrepreneur in Residence at LSBU, I have been rewarded to see how many students have developed an idea into a fledgling business and like to stay in touch to see how they do after they have finished the course.
